Judge sentences Trappler 25 years to life
SCHUYLER COUNTY—Alice Trappler was sentenced to 25 years to life, Thursday, July 25, in connection with the murder of Dix resident Daniel Bennett in 2012. Authorities had previously explained Bennett was the father of a child with Trappler. The investigation also revealed two other people connected to the murder. Days after the death, law enforcement initially arrested Nathan Hand, Corning, for his part in the crime. That same day, authorities pursued Hand’s step-brother Thomas Borden, Corning. Officials explained Borden was Trappler’s former husband. Law Enforcement reported a chase with the suspect ended in Borden jumping in front of a SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) commuter train and later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities said Hand made a deal and was sentenced to 19 years in prison, June 20, 2013. Trappler’s trial started April 19 and ended May 8. District Attorney Joseph Fazzary said Trappler was convicted on five charges and will serve the terms at the same time. The sentences for each charge were: • 25 years to life for each of the two convictions of murder in the second degree. • 25 years in prison and five years post release supervision for one count of burglary in the first degree. • 15 years in prison and five years post release supervision for one count of burglary in the second degree. • Eight and 1/3 to 25 years for one count of conspiracy in the second degree. Trappler will also have to pay the victim’s family $3,259 in restitution. Fazzary added Trappler spoke briefly at sentencing saying she was not guilty.
