Porch is hanging over Jacob's BrookPENN YAN-A porch on the east side of a home atAssistant Director of Public Works Richard Osgood said the wall that was under the porch was compromised some time in the past and the rain last Thursday was, “The straw that broke the camel’s back and the wall fell over. Thank God no one was hurt.” The house was probably built around the 1920s, according to Osgood and, from an engineering standpoint the wall was not constructed well. Inspection of the wall on the east side of the house after the collapse showed the wall had bowed between three quarters and one and a quarter inches and there was a smell of natural gas in the basement. Gas, water and electricity have been shut off. Osgood said he doesn’t know what the next step would be, but he understands the village is trying to work with the owner of the property. |
