SPORTS RECAP: Week of 9/13/17

Odessa-Montour boys soccer tops Groton 3-0
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour boys varsity soccer team beat Groton, Wednesday, Sept. 6. The final score was 3-0.
Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team lost to visiting Elmira Notre Dame, 50-32, Thursday, Sept. 7.
Megan Adams took first in the 200 freestyle (2:38.65). Tori Reese was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.91) and second in the 200 IM (2:37.83).
Haley Hoose placed second in the 50 freestyle (32.14) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:13.94). Kara Reese finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:30.37).
The 200 medley relay team (2:19.90) and 400 freestyle relay team (5:06.38) also were second.
Girls soccer
The Indians' girls varsity soccer team suffered a loss to Waverly, 10-0, Thursday, Sept. 7.
"We competed in the first half by challenging Waverly defensively, but we could not contain their exceptional attack," said Coach Marc Kimmerly. "Waverly is a well coached club and it was obvious by the way they stayed composed and delivered accurate passes to each other. They picked us apart little by little in the midfield by winning the balls out of the air."
Odessa was blanked by Groton, Tuesday, Sept. 5. The final score was 7-0.
Coach Kimmerly said McKennah Lott led by example on defense with her non-stop pressure and her ability to communicate with the back line. He added Olivia Grover and Kennedey Heichel had some "fluid passing moments."

Seneca Indians win second game, 36-14, at Watkins
WATKINS GLEN-The Seneca Indians combined varsity football team earned a second straight win, Saturday, Sept. 9, beating Spencer-Van Etten/Candor, 36-14.
The Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour football team rallied from behind in the first half to tie the score 14-14 at the end of the third quarter. Zach Elliott scored all five touchdowns for the Seneca Indians, including the three in the final quarter that secured the team's win on the Watkins field.
"We moved the ball well offensively and played good defense in the first half," said Coach Trevor Holland. "However, just like in the Greene game last week, the second half was when everything came together."
Elliott led with 232 total rushing yards. Joe Chedzoy posted 84 yards, while Casen Weeden added 53.
Defensively, Elliott also led in tackles with nine. Chedzoy earned six tackles. Wrett Brower tackled five. Josh Beckley, Weeden, Noah Angle, and Sean Kelley each had three tackles.
"We don't dominate on the first play, we dominate on the 70th play," said Holland. "The team's determination to keep their heads up when we were down again at the half proves to them that it's our will to win that guides us."

Cross country runners take first at invitational
VERONA--The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team was first in their race during the Vernon-Verona-Sherill Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 9.
The Senecas beat 15 other teams in one of four races of the the event. Overall, the Watkins boy finished fourth out of all the races.
Leading Watkins was Gabe Planty in first (17:01). Aaron Planty followed in second (17:12). Sean Holland was seventh (17:42), followed by Max Evans in 18th (18:09). Sam Thorsland took 26th (18:33).
The girls also competed as an incomplete team. Kai Sutterby finished 13th (22:08). Mackenzie Kellogg placed 36th (23:45).
Boys Soccer
The Watkins Glen boys varsity soccer team was blanked by Lansing, Wednesday, Sept. 6. The final score was 8-0.
Volleyball
The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team lost to Tioga in three sets, Wednesday, Sept. 6. The final scores were 25-16, 26-24, 25-18.
The Senecas rallied to try and take the lead in the second set, led by Emmie Bond's 13 service points. Coach Dawn Baker said "Not only with Emmie Bond having a strong evening, seniors Hanley Elliott and Megan Hazlitt also had some great plays."

Penn Yan girls soccer falls; football wins 28-23
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan girls varsity soccer team was blanked by Haverling/Bath, 1-0, Thursday, Sept. 7. Goalie Melanie Gleason posted seven saves.
The Lady Mustangs fell to Marcus Whitman, Tuesday, Sept. 5. The final score was 3-0. Gleason earned three saves in goal.
Football
The Penn Yan varsity football team topped Wayne, 28-23, Friday, Sept. 8.
Offensively, Will Rogers posted eight carries for 50 yards and one touchdown. He was nine of 15 passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He scored a pair of two-point conversions on passes as well.
Dylan Stape racked up 155 yards over 17 carries, with a touchdown. He also earned 59 yards with two receptions and a touchdown. Desmond Battin had four receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. He posted another 26 yards with four carries.
On defense, Conner Fingar led with 12 tackles. Battin and Jack Peterson both earned nine tackles, while Stape and Brennan Prather each had seven.
"Coaches Tim McBride, Jon Pragle and Dave Tese were phenomenal as usual," said Head Coach Paul Giovine. "Their attention to detail during weekly game prep and during play calling on the sidelines is a huge reason for our success so far. Our players gave everything they had."
Golf
The Penn Yan boys varsity golf team lost to Waterloo, 243-250, Friday, Sept. 8.
Peter Nicholson had the second lowest score with a 43. Clay Koivuniemi posted a 46, while Max Brodmann followed with 49.
Penn Yan beat Mynderse, 250-272, Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Kevin Smith led with a low of 47. Brodmann and Koivuniemi both posted a 49.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team topped Midlakes, 4-1, Friday, Sept. 8.
Shelby Woodard beat Rachael Webb, 6-2, 6-4. Molly Pullen defeated Suellen Petracchi,6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Claire Pullen and Lexi Marble beat Kathryn Emerson and Samantha Smith, 6-1, 6-1. Abby Heselton and Grace Worth won against Abby DeJonge and Hannah Peisher, 6-2, 6-3.
Penn Yan blanked Geneva, Tuesday, Sept. 5. The final score was 5-0.
In singles, Jenna Curbeau defeated Lauren Schmit, 6-3, 6-3. Woodard beat Natalie Berg-Pappert, 6-2, 6-0. Molly Pullen won against Tayler Topor, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Claire Pullen and Sam Denson topped Enitan McIntosh and Sarah VanDeMortel, 6-1, 6-1. Marble and Heselton beat Winnie Tang and Sara Wright, 6-0, 6-2.
Volleyball
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team fell to Palmyra Macedon in four sets, Thursday, Sept. 7. The final scores were 25-18, 27-29, 25-15, 25-17.
Emily Wunder led with 25 kills, three solo blocks, 14 digs and seven assists. Elissa Callaway had three aces and 19 assists. Sydney Bloom recorded eight kills, 13 digs and three aces.
Boys soccer
The Penn Yan boys varsity soccer team lost to Wayne, Friday, Sept. 8. The final score was 3-1.
The Mustangs scored in the second period off of a goal by Austin Blumbergs. Fabian Martinez-Sanchez assisted.
Penn Yan beat Waterloo, 1-0, Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Josh Smith scored the game's only goal off of an assist from Ralph Clancy. The Mustangs had 16 shots on goal and nine corner kicks.

Dundee teams lose soccer, football games
RUSHVILLE--The Dundee boys varsity soccer team fell to Marcus Whitman in an away game, Friday, Sept. 8. The final score was 9-0.
Dundee's soccer team was beat by Honeoye, Wednesday, Sept. 6. The final score was 11-0.
Girls soccer
The Dundee girls varsity soccer team suffered a loss to Harley-Allendale Columbia, Thursday, Sept. 7. The final score was 10-1.
Haille Empson scored the Lady Scots' lone goal in the first period. In the goal, Karyanna Rutledge posted 14 saves.
Football
The Scots varsity football team fell to Clyde-Savannah, 41-21, in an away game, Friday, Sept. 8.
Ryan Prior posted two touchdowns, one over his 15 carries for 44 yards, and the second with his one reception for 15 yards. Kyle Cratsley was three of eight passing for 46 yards. Sam Richards earned a touchdown, with 19 carries for 115 yards. Billy Bowers added 60 yards over 16 carries.
On defense, Richards led with five tackles and one fumble recovery.
The Scots return to action at home, Saturday, Sept. 16 against South Seneca.

Hammondsport hosts cross country meet
HAMMONDSPORT--The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country competed against Avoca, Campbell-Savona and Jasper-Troupsburg, Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Thomas Kressly finished first for the boys (18:06). Tyler Hill placed sixth (20:27), while Mike Beam was 13th (21:31). Eli Hill took 18th (23:44).
The girls competed, but with an incomplete team. Morgan Sherman finished second overall (24:27). Becca Randall took fifth (30:35) and Paige MacDonald seventh (31:15). Emma Thompson placed 10th (34:27).
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport girls varsity soccer team lost to Williamson, Pa., 4-1, Friday, Sept. 8. The Lakers scored on a goal by Madison Wright. Tea Flynn assisted.
The girls were beat by visiting Romulus, 3-1, Wednesday, Sept. 5.
Destiny Hammond scored for the Lakers during the second period. Goalie Megan Allen earned 10 saves.
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team lost to Scio, Thursday, Sept. 7. The final score was 3-0. The Lakers attempted six shots on goal and earned 10 saves.
The Lakers boys were beat by Campbell-Savona, 4-1, Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Colin Drain scored with an assist from Parker Watson. Hammondsport had 16 shots on goal and 11 saves.
Volleyball
Hammondsport's varsity volleyball team defeated Mynderse in four sets, Tuesday, Sept. 5. The final scores were 25-10, 25-15, 20-25, 26-24.
Julia Bennett led with 17 kills and two blocks. At the service line, Robin Jenkins posted seven aces. Shelby Sherman and Elissa Martinez each had six aces.
With the win, the Lakers' record improves to 4-1.
