SPORTS RECAP: Week of 5-2-18
Penn Yan girls lacrosse tops Maine-Endwell, 7-3
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan girls varsity lacrosse team won against Maine-Endwell, Saturday, April 28. The final score was 7-3.
Sydney Bloom posted three goals and two assists. Hannah Keech added two goals and two assists. Alli Olevnik and Hayley Andersen each scored once.
Penn Yan topped Wayne, 15-3, Wednesday, April 25.
Elissa Callaway scored four goals and one assist. Keech posted three goals and two assists, while Olevnik also scored three times. Bloom and Bre Lane-Tomion each had two goals. Logan Broome scored one.
The lacrosse team beat Newark-Midlakes, 15-5, Monday, April 23.
Keech led with six goals. Callaway and Bloom each earned three goals, and five and four assists respectively. Grace Ledgerwood, Lexi Strong, and Sydney Hulse all had one goal.
Boys lacrosse
The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team defeated Clarence, 10-5, Saturday, April 28.
Austin Blumbergs led with three goals and two assists, while Ayden Mowry also scored three goals. Conner Fingar posted one goal and four assists. Dylan Stape added one goal and two assists. Devon Gerhardt scored and assisted once, while Chase Blumbergs had one goal. Jeff Kinyoun posted six saves in the cage.
With the win, the Mustangs' record is 6-2.
Penn Yan topped Livonia-Avon, Tuesday, April 24. The final score was 17-1.
Mowry led with five goals and two assists. Fingar scored four goals and three assists. Austin Blumbergs also had four goals and two assists. Stape and Max Brodmann each scored twice. Stape also earned an assist, while Gerhardt had two assists. In goal, Kinyoun posted three saves and Keith Fuller had one.
Track and field
The Penn Yan girls track and field team placed fifth, while the boys were eighth at the Wayne Invitational, Friday, April 27.
Emma Harling placed first in the shot put (31'8.25") and discus (92'0"). Joddie Decker was third in the 1500 meter run (5:09.51) and fifth in the 3000 meter run (11:23.38). Maci Nicholson took fourth in the 2000 meter steeplechase (7:56.76). Samantha D'Arpino finished ninth overall in the outdoor pentathlon, with fourth in the pentathlon shot put (21'4.75"), fifth in the pentathlon 800 meter run (3:02.94), and 10th in the pentathlon 100 meter hurdles (21.93).
For the boys, Ben DeMoras placed second in the 1600 meter run (4:45.35) and fourth in the 3200 meter run (10:41.31). Garrett Golden finished fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:13.50), while Peyton Silliman was fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:24.83). Dominic Lafferty placed seventh in the outdoor pentathlon overall. Connor Moore took 10th in the 3200 meter run (11:21.03).
Softball
The Penn Yan varsity softball team lost to Geneva, Friday, April 27. The final score was 8-0.
The Lady Mustangs fell to Wayne, 13-12, Wednesday, April 25.
Baseball
The Penn Yan varsity baseball team blanked Geneva, Friday, April 27. The final score was 5-0.
Brandon Sherman and Peyton Schuck were both 1-for-2, with an RBI. Derrick Riviello was 1-for-3, with one RBI.
The Mustangs lost to Wayne, 12-7, Wednesday, April 25.
Noah Detar was 2-for-4 and Donny McMahon was 2-for-3, both with two RBIs. Sherman went 1-for-3, also with two RBIs. Brennan Prather was 2-for-3, while Matt Moniot was 1-for-2.
Tennis
The Mustangs' varsity tennis team lost to Harley Allendale Columbia, 4-1, Friday, April 27.
Penn Yan's win came in doubles. Spencer Christensen and Reid Castner topped Tom Tang and Clark White, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The other scores were: Austin Lafferty, 6-1, 6-0; Alex Thiesmeyer, 6-0, 6-0; Brian Hollister, 6-0, 6-1; and Jeremy Fenton and Lukas Spears, 6-3, 6-3.
Penn Yan topped Honeoye, 5-0, Tuesday, April 24.
Lafferty won against Trevor Healy, 6-1, 7-5. Thiesmeyer defeated Giovanni Gullace, 6-2, 6-3. Hollister beat Quinn Olsen, 6-4, 6-0.
Fenton and Connor Hunter topped Anh Le and Ethan Ball, 6-2, 6-3. Christensen and Castner defeated Gabby Trippi and Danielle Schultz, 7-5, 6-4.
The Mustangs' tennis team blanked Newark, 5-0, Monday, April 23.
Lafferty beat Nick Cepulo, 7-5, 5-7, 10-6. Spears topped Jonathan Dwyer, 6-0, 6-0. Thiesmeyer won against Phillip Ross, 6-2, 6-0.
Fenton and Hunter defeated Benjamin Allegretti and Joseph Malach, 6-3, 6-3. Christensen and Castner topped Connor O Brien and Alex Collom, 6-3, 6-1.
Lady Scots fall in overtime to Romulus, 11-10
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity softball team fell to Romulus, 11-10, in a close game, Friday, April 27. The game went into 10 innings.
For Dundee, Makenzie Strait was 5-for-6. Hailee Empson went 3-for-6.
The softball team lost to Marcus Whitman, 11-8, Monday, April 23.
Bri Maloy and Strait were both 2-for-4. Empson went 2-for-3.
Track and field
The Dundee boys varsity track and field team won first in a meet hosted by the Scots, Tuesday, May 24. The girls finished fifth.
William Hall was first in the 100 meter dash (12.05), first in the long jump (20'9.5") and second in the triple jump (39'8.5"). Leif Hoyt took first in the discus (117'10"). Sam Richards was second in the pole vault (11'9"). Josh Cramer finished second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:11.08) and third in the 110 meter hurdles (18.70). Matt Wood placed third in the 1600 meter run (5:11.81), while Tate Hoyt was third in the discus (108'11").
For the girls, Lily Hall took first in the triple jump (31'7"), second in the high jump (4'5"), fourth in the long jump (14'4.25"), and fifth in the 100 meter dash (14.39). Hallie Knapp placed seventh in the discus (61'4"), while Erika Gould took seventh in the shot put (22'1.5"). Madison Everetts was eighth in the high jump (3'10"). Melina Everetts finished eighth in the 100 meter hurdles (22.60).
Baseball
Dundee's varsity baseball team fell to Naples, Tuesday, April 24. The final score was 17-1.
Logan Thompson was 2-for-2. Kyle Cratsley went 1-for-3.
Odessa-Montour softball team falls to Edison
ODESSA--The Indians' varsity softball team fell to Thomas A. Edison, Friday, April 27. The final score was 15-0.
Grace Vondracek earned a hit for Odessa-Montour, a single. Pitching, Vondracek struck out four, Lydia Lynch had one strike-out.
Track and field
The Odessa-Montour boys took sixth and the girls seventh at the Waite-Molnar Track and Field Invitational, Saturday, April 28.
Zach Elliott placed first in the discus (141'2") and first in the shot put (48'2"). Eric Rumsey was sixth in the discus (114'10"), while Dylan Houseknecht took eighth in the shot put (36'1.5").
For the girls, Jaylin Rumsey was third in the shot put (28'9") and fifth in the discus (77'2")
Seneca Indians lose to Newark
NEWARK VALLEY--The Seneca Indians varsity baseball team lost to Newark Valley, Saturday, April 28, in a close 2-0 game.
Sean Kelly was 2-for-3, while Caleb Thomas and Austin Voorheis were each 1-for-2. Voorheis also posted two stolen bases. Thomas and Kelly both earned one steal. Pitching, Isaac McIlroy struck out five.
The combined Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen team fell to Tioga, 5-2, Thursday, April 26.
Thomas was 2-for-3. Kelly and Derrick Lewis each went 1-for-3, with one RBI. Kelly also earned a double. Pitching, Michael Doane struck out one.
Track and field
The Watkins Glen varsity track and field teams competed in the Waite-Molnar Track and Field Invitational, Saturday, April 28.
Gabe Planty, the only male athlete to compete because the event took place over spring break, won first in the 3200 meter run (9:57.55).
For the girls, Breanna Carl placed eighth in the 3000 meter run (12:46.17), followed by Julya Slater in 11th (13:15.98). Jena Slater took seventh in the pole vault (7'6").
