SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10-24-18

Watkins Glen volleyball wins one, loses two games
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team split a pair of home games, Wednesday and Thursday last week. The Senecas won against Spencer-Van Etten 3-0, Wednesday and fell to Candor 3-0, Thursday.
The Watkins volleyball team also lost to Newfield in four sets, Monday, Oct. 15. The final scores were 20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-18.
Carlie Baker earned nine service points, one ace, one dig, five kills, two blocks, and one assist. Kelsey Kernan added seven service points, three aces, four kills, and 20 assists. Katie Losey had six service points, two aces, eight digs, and eight kills. Claudia Parker posted five service points, one ace, 12 digs, four kills, and one assist. Mattie Yontz contributed five service points, two aces, one dig, one kill, and two blocks. Adrienna Solomon recorded three service points, one ace, seven digs, four kills, and two blocks.
Cross country
The Watkins Glen girls and boys varsity cross country teams placed sixth and seventh respectively at the Marathon Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 20.
For the girls, Breanna Carl took third (21:49.8). Kai Sutterby was fifth (22:20.5), while Makenzie Kellogg was 15th (23:26.8). Sierra Morris was 81st (28:33.0), followed by Maya Somerville in 104th (35:11.1).
For the boys, Gabe Planty placed fourth (17:08.0). Max Evans was 29th (19:18.1), followed by Steven Gublo in 41st (19:35.2). Lawrence Majors took 52nd (19:53.0). Benjamin Swinnerton was 71st (20:39.3). Elliott Holland placed 91st (22:13.7).
Girls soccer
The Watkins Glen girls varsity soccer team lost to Delaware Academy, 3-0, in the opening round of the Section IV Class C tournament.
In the goal, Cierra Barber had 15 saves. Coach Scott Morse said, "It was difficult for us to get our fast attack going on the muddy, slick field. We had some opportunities but just couldn't put the ball in the net. We fought hard throughout and that's all I ever ask of the girls. They did well this season finishing 10-5 in the regular season and winning the Small Schools South Division."

Seneca Indians advance to sectionals with win
WATKINS GLEN--The Seneca Indians took down Dryden, 27-12, on the Watkins turf field, Friday, Oct. 19.
With the win, the combined Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour team will play in the Section IV playoffs, Saturday, Oct. 27, against Susquehanna Valley.
The Seneca Indians amassed 295 yards offensively in the first half and held Dryden to 56 yards in the second half. Coach Trevor Holland explained, "this type of play controlled the outcome of the game, and that was something we focused on going back to the beginning of the season. This was a great way to finish out our regular season, and to carry momentum like this into next week as we prepare for Susquehanna Valley really helps."
Zach Elliott rushed for 195 yards with 25 carries and earned three touchdowns. Joe Chedzoy had 22 carries for 110 yards and one touchdown. Casen Weeden added 91 yards over 14 carries.
Through the air, Derrick Lewis made five attempts for 55 yards. Elliott secured 30 of those yards with one catch. Chedzoy added 25 yards on another.
O-M Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team lost to Waverly, 58-33, Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Tori Reese was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.54) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:08.45). Kara Reese took first in the 100 backstroke (1:15.58). Megan Adams was second in the 100 backstroke (1:19.77) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:35.82)
Delaney Paulisczak finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:39.45). Madison Moss placed third in the 200 IM (2:45.65), while Reagan Reese took third in the 50 freestyle (34.05).

Dundee volleyball falls to Mynderse in four games
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity volleyball team lost Mynderse in four sets, Thursday, Oct. 18. The final scores were 18-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-10.
Megan Sutherland posted nine assists and five aces. Mackenzie Strait added one dig, three tips, one block, and two aces. Alyssah Newell earned four digs, four attacks, and one block.
Football
The Scots' varsity football team lost to Canisteo-Greenwood, Friday, Oct. 19. The final score was 20-8.
Gabriel Kirkendall posted 107 yards over 16 carries and had Dundee's touchdown. Joshua Cramer secured 77 yards over 25 carries. Brady Richardson carried for 12 yards.
Cramer also had 54 yards on four kickoff returns. Richardson added 20 yards on one return.
Preston Cratsley was 2-for-9 passing, earning 15 yards. Austin Gibson had two catches for the 15 yards.
Girls soccer
The Dundee girls varsity soccer team lost to Bishop Kearney in the opening round of the Class C3 sectional tournament, Tuesday, Oct. 16. The final score was 7-0.

Hammondsport seeded first for sectionals
SENECA FALLS--The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team ended the regular season with a victory over Mynderse, Friday, Oct. 19. The final scores were 25-19, 29-27, 25-20.
Shelby Sherman had five aces and 12 kills. Julia Bennett and Erika Hilligus had seven and six kills respectively.
With the win, the Lakers' record is 17-1. Hammondsport is seeded first in their class and will play in the Section V quarterfinals at Prattsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 27.
Hammondsport topped Penn Yan, 25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 25-16, Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Sherman posted seven aces, while Brianna Pratt had six. Bennett also put down 13 kills.
Hammondsport topped the undefeated Lyons team on the road, Monday, Oct. 15. The final scores were 25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 25-19.
Sherman led at the service line with 12 aces. Hilligus had 10 aces. Bennett recorded 11 kills, followed by Sherman with nine.
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport girls varsity soccer team was beaten by Friendship, 2-1, in the opening round of the Section V Class D2 tournament, Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Hannah Hoerter scored for the Lakers. In the goal, Megan Allen had four saves.

Penn Yan football wins first sectional game, 48-0
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team blanked Dansville, Friday, Oct. 19, with a 48-0 score.
Will Rogers was 26-for-29 passing, earning 340 yards and seven touchdowns for the Mustangs. Rushing, Rogers also posted 28 yards. Mekhi Mahan scored a two-point conversion.
On the receiving side, Conner Fingar caught 12 passes for 177 yards, scoring five touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Kyle Berna also had eight receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Mahan added another 66 yards, catching three passes.
Mahan led the defense with 10 tackles. Riley Brittingham earned seven. Fingar, Berna, and Andrew Garren each tackled six players.
Penn Yan will now play Letchworth/Warsaw, Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the sectional semifinal. The game is at Honeoye Falls-Lima high school.
Volleyball
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team lost to Wayne, Friday, Oct.19. The final scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-20.
Caitlin Wunder had 16 kills and two solo blocks. Serina Sheradin had 19 assists and seven digs. Akiya Brewer posted 10 digs.
Penn Yan lost to Hammondsport, Tuesday, Oct. 16. The final scores were 25-19, 26-28, 25-20, 25-16. Wunder posted 11 kills. Hanna Brodmann had six kills and two aces.
Tennis
Penn Yan competed in the section inter-class tournament, Thursday, Oct. 18.
In singles, Sam Denson beat Honeoye Falls-Lima's Emma McLean, 6-3, 6-3, in the first singles round, but lost to Harley-Allendale Columbia's Anastasia Gubanova, 6-0, 6-0 in round two.
The doubles team of Claire and Molly Pullen lost to Brighton's Audry Silber and Ellie Spivak, 6-2, 6-2.
Boys soccer
The Penn Yan boys varsity soccer team lost to Wellsville, 5-0, in the first round of sectional play, Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Cross country
The Penn Yan girls varsity cross country team placed fifth in the Marion Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 20.
Maci Nicholson led in fourth place (20:54). Gracie Murphy took fifth (21:04), while Jaina Doyle was 23rd (22:53). Jenna Curbeau finished in 27th (23:16). Paige McKee took 39th (24:19) and Ashley Sisson was 59th (38:34).
The boys also competed and took seventh. Ayden Mowry was 20th (18:19). Connor Moore took 29th (18:54). David Young placed 51st (20:12), followed by James Tette in 52nd (20:14). Daniel Jiang finished 59th (20:46).
