Watkins Glen girls basketball wins sectional crown CORTLAND--The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team claimed the Section IV Class C Championship, Saturday, March 2. The Senecas beat Unatego, 53-42, at SUNY Cortland in the championship. The Watkins girls advance to the Class C Regionals against Section III's Cooperstown, Sunday, March 10. Taylor Kelly led with 25 points, including seven three-point shots and five rebounds. Kelsey Kernan earned 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Hannah Morse netted eight points, with eight assists and three rebounds. Danielle Leszyk added four points, five rebounds, and three assists. Adrienna Solomon posted three points, four rebounds, and three assists. With the win, Watkins' record is 19-4. The Senecas beat Newfield, 57-29, on the way to their championship win, Tuesday, Feb. 26. Kelly posted 19 points, with three rebounds and three blocks. Morse followed with 15 points, nine assists, nine steals, and five rebounds. Leszyk netting 13 points, including four three-point shots and five rebounds. Solomon scored four points, with 10 rebounds, while Kernan also earned four points. Indoor track Watkins' Gabe Planty competed at the New York state indoor track championship, Saturday, March 2. Planty placed 20th in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:30.65.
Hammondsport girls fall in sectional semifinal BATH--Hammondsport's girls varsity basketball team lost to Prattsburgh/Avoca in the Section V Class D1 semifinals, 54-40, Tuesday, Feb. 26. Destiny Hammond netted 14 points, with six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Ana Salom posted six points, six rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Paula Garcia had four points, four assists, four steals, and three rebounds. McKenzie Boscoe earned four points and two rebounds, while Tea Flynn also had four points, four rebounds, four blocks, and two assists. Jillian Underhill scored three points, with five assists and two rebounds. Maddie Sprague earned three points and two rebounds. Shelby Sherman had two points and two rebounds.
Lady Mustang bowlers take second at sectionals ROCHESTER--The Penn Yan girls and boys varsity bowling teams took second and fourth respectively at the Section V Class C championship, Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 26 and 27. After the morning round, the Lady Mustangs were in first in front of Newark by 12 points, but fell to second place in the afternoon session. Kari Ayers rolled 1292 across six games. Ayers also earned the High Series Award for Division C and was named to the All-Tournament team. Her series total was the second highest among all bowlers from the Monroe County, City Catholic, Wayne County, Finger Lakes East, and Finger Lakes West leagues. "It is a wonderful accomplishment for a wonderful and talented young lady," said Coach Melinda Johnson. "Brandee Ellis shined in the a.m. set with a 530 series and seniors Emily Augustine and Emilie Thomas performed consistently all day." Cameron Bassage led the boys with a 1075 series, over six games. Connor Harmon had a high game of 222. "This team of boys and girls have been wonderful to work with, added Johnson. "We laugh, cry and eat together but we really consider ourselves a family.".
