SPORTS RECAP: Week of 4-24-19
Penn Yan battles back, but comes up one goal short CANANDAIGUA--The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team lost to Canandaigua, 10-9, Saturday, April 20 in overtime. The Mustangs trailed 6-3 at halftime and 8-5 at the end of the third. Four goals by Penn Yan in the fourth tied the game at 9-9 going into overtime. Conner Fingar and Clay Kinyoun both posted three goals and one assist. Devon Gerhardt scored once and assisted three times. Mekhi Mahan and Chase Blumbergs each had one goal. Colton Smith assisted twice, while Ayden Mowry assisted once. Goalie Jeff Kinyoun made 11 saves. The boys blanked Cathedral Prep, 18-0, Wednesday, April 17. Fingar and Smith each scored four goals and had two assists and one assist respectively. Mahan earned three goals, while Blumbergs scored twice. Gerhardt had one goal and two assists. Carter Earl added one goal and one assist. Lucas Paige, Jeff Kinyoun, and Wally Young all scored once. Mowry notched two assists, while Kyler Lloyd and Jack Peterson both assisted once. In the goal, Jeff Kinyoun and Griffin Emerson each posted one save. Baseball Penn Yan's varsity baseball team lost to Newark, 8-2, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Thursday, April 18. Clark Simmons was 2-for-4, with an RBI and a double. Peyton Schuck was 1-for-2, while Matt Moniot was 1-for-4. The Mustangs fell to The School Without Walls (Washington D.C.), Wednesday, April 17. The final score was 10-0. Schuck and Moniot were both 1-for-3. Schuck posted a double. On the pitcher's mound, Mason MacKerchar and Simmons each struck out one batter. The boys were beaten, 14-2, by Dixie (Due West, S.C.), Tuesday, April 16. Tyler Bouchard was 2-for-3, with one RBI. Simmons was 1-for-3, with an RBI, and Schuck was 1-for-3, with a triple. Andrew Rossi was 2-for-3, while Andrew Garren was 1-for-3. Softball The Penn Yan varsity softball team fell to Southlakes (Virginia) in a softball tournament held at Myrtle Beach, S.C., Wednesday, April 17. Kiana Larham, Kayla Andersen, and Marianna Dalglish each earned singles. The Lady Mustangs lost to Eastside (Virginia), 6-0, Tuesday, April 16. Eastside scored the six runs in the first inning. Elle Harrison, Andersen, and Dalglish all notched singles. On the pitcher's mound, Andersen struck out two. "It was our best game yet defensively," said Coach Melissa Armsden. "The girls made plays that got us out of tough situations. Five hits went to the outfield and five hits were caught. We are improving with each game."
