SPORTS RECAP: Week of 9-11-19

Mustangs open football season with a road win
BATH--The Penn Yan varsity football team started the 2019 season with a 10-6 win over Bath, Friday, Sept. 6.
Kyle Berna was 22-for-36, passing for 144 yards with one interception. Berna also had nine carries for five yards.
Mekhi Mahan secured 13 receptions for 53 yards. Brennan Prather received four times for 51 yards. Kyler Lloyd earned 28 yards on five receptions.
On defense, Mahan posted 18 tackles, with one sack and one fumble recovery. Berna had 10 tackles and two sacks. Lloyd added eight tackles and one interception that was returned for a touchdown.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team won a shortened match against Prattsburgh, 3-0, ended early due to rain, Friday, Sept. 6.
Only the singles matches were completed. Molly Pullen won, 6-1, 6-1. Claire Pullen recorded the victory, 6-0, 6-1. Abigail Garvey won with 6-1, 6-0 scores.
The tennis team topped Geneva, 5-0, Thursday, Sept. 5.
The final scores for singles were: Molly Pullen, 6-2, 6-1; Claire Pullen, 6-0, 6-1; and Garvey, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, both pairs, Sam Denson and Jayden Hollister as well as Sydney Moravec and Grace Worth won, 6-1, 6-0.
Penn Yan topped Naples, 5-0, Tuesday, Sept. 3.
In singles the final scores were: Molly Pullen, 6-3, 6-1; Claire Pullen, 6-0, 6-0; and Garvey, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, Denson and Hollister won, 6-2, 6-2. Moravec and Worth finished ahead with 6-3, 6-2 scores.
Boys soccer
The Mustangs' boys varsity soccer team topped Midlakes, 4-1, Friday, Sept. 6.
Brigham Hansen scored three goals and had one assist. Nick Jarecke posted a goal and an assist, while Bryan Smith and Zackery Townley each assisted once. In goal, Mason MacKerchar posted seven saves.
Penn Yan beat Marcus Whitman, Thursday, Sept. 5. The final score was 3-2.
Hansen scored all three goals, with assists from Eric Fingar, Tyler Griffin, and Townley. In goal, MacKerchar had 10 saves.
Penn Yan fell to Geneva, 3-0, Tuesday, Sept. 3. Goalie MacKerchar posted 13 saves.
Girls soccer
The Lady Mustangs blanked Sodus, 5-0, Friday, Sept. 6.
Hayley Andersen scored three goals and assisted twice. Sierra Harrison and Marrianna Dalglish both scored once. Leah Moniot and Kaley Griffin each had one assist. In goal, Elle Harrison posted three saves.
Penn Yan fell to Newark, 2-0, Wednesday, Sept. 4. In goal, Harrison had seven saves.
The Penn Yan girls topped Bloomfield, 9-1, in the first game of the season, Monday, Sept. 2.
Andersen scored four goals. Dalglish, Moniot, Mariah Hoover, Morgan Andersen, and Sierra Harrison each scored once. In goal, Elle Harrison had two saves.
Golf
The Penn Yan varsity golf team fell to Geneva, 197-232, Friday, Sept. 6.
Max Brodmann had a 42. Clayton Koivuniemi posted a 45, with a birdie on hole two. Peter Nicholson and Clark Simmons both had a 47.
The Mustangs beat Waterloo, 212-230, Thursday, Sept. 5.
Nicholson posted a 39, with a birdie on number five. Koivuniemi earned a 40, with a birdie on three. Brodmann added a 42, with a birdie on two.
Penn Yan topped Newark, Wednesday, Sept. 4. The final score was 231-287.
Kevin Smith led with a low of 45. Nicholson, Cameron Bassage, and Brodmann each posted a 46. Koivuniemi had a 48, with a birdie on hold number 12.

Soccer loses two; cross country competes at Red Jacket
BLOOMFIELD--Dundee's girls varsity soccer team lost to Bloomfield in an away game Friday, Sept. 6. The final score was 4-0. In goal, Claudya Lyons earned 17 saves.
The Lady Scots soccer team fell to Harley Allendale Columbia, Wednesday, Sept. 4. The final score was 5-0. Lyons had 13 saves in goal.
Cross country
The Dundee boys varsity cross country team took 18th at the Bob Goodell Memorial Cross Country Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 7.
Leading the Scots was Matt Wood in third (16:55). Steven Webster was 87th (19:52). Gabe Dillon took 129th (22:46). Logan Buchanan placed 131st (23:14), followed by Camden Buchanan in 132nd (23:27).
Boys soccer
The combined Watkins Glen/Dundee boys varsity soccer team lost to Marathon, 6-0, Thursday, Sept. 5.
The team had two corner kicks and two shots on goal. Bryce Kelly had 10 saves in goal.
The combined Watkins/Dundee team beat Waterloo, 2-0, Tuesday, Sept. 3. Dave Semans Jr. scored twice, with one assist by Isaac McIlroy. In goal, Kelly posted five saves.

Runners record win for Hammondsport
HAMMONDSPORT--The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country team beat Jasper-Troupsburg, 15-55, Thursday, Sept. 5.
Thomas Kressly led in first overall (18:31). Liam Kressly placed second (18:50), followed by Matt Lyle in third (19:21). George Drake took fourth (19:56) and Mike Beam was fifth (20:07). Blake Wright was sixth (21:40). Seth Madigan finished eighth (22:33), followed by Jaisek Covell in 10th (23:50).
Volleyball
The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team beat Genesee Valley in five sets, Thursday, Sept. 5. The final scores were 25-18, 17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12.
Angela Gonzo led at the service line, with five aces. Julia Bennett had 14 kills and four blocks. Erika Hilligus earned eight kills.
The Lakers defeated Addison, 25-8, 25-15, 25-8, Wednesday, Sept. 4.
Vittoria Cateni led the team with three aces and seven kills. Bennett had three aces and five kills.
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team lost to Prattsburgh, Friday, Sept. 6. The final score was 7-1. Nevin Davis recorded the goal for the Lakers.
The Lakers soccer team lost to Jasper-Troupsburg, Wednesday, Sept. 4. The final score was 4-0.
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport/Bradford girls varsity soccer team lost to Addison, 3-0, Thursday, Sept. 5. In goal, Rorie Whitcomb posted 30 saves.
The combined soccer team blanked Scio, Tuesday, Sept. 3. The final score was 4-0.
Alivia Phenes scored twice. Faith Bray had one goal and one assist. Hannah Hoerter added one goal. Kirsta Sleeve earned four saves in goal.

Boys soccer falls to Marathon; runners take ninth
WATKINS GLEN--The combined Watkins Glen/Dundee boys varsity soccer team lost to Marathon, 6-0, Thursday, Sept. 5.
The team had two corner kicks and two shots on goal. Bryce Kelly had 10 saves in goal.
The combined Watkins/Dundee team beat Waterloo, 2-0, Tuesday, Sept. 3. Dave Semans Jr. scored twice, with one assist by Isaac McIlroy. In the goal, Kelly posted five saves.

The Watkins Glen girls varsity soccer team lost to Marathon in the first game of the season, Friday, Sept. 6. The final score was 6-0.
The Senecas earned two corner kicks to Marathon's eight. In goal, Natalie Edmister had 10 saves.
"The team got outplayed in the first half but was more competitive in the second half," said Coach Scott Morse. "Hopefully we can get it together and improve going forward."
Cross country
The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team took ninth at the Bob Goodell Memorial Cross Country Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 7.
Gabe Planty took second overall (16:30). Sam Thorsland finished 35th (18:22). Steven Gublo placed 61st (19:04), while Ben Swinnerton was 75th (19:28).
For the girls, Breanna Carl was 23rd (21:52). Makenzie Kellogg took 50th (23:26).

Odessa-Montour volleyball notches win over Spencer
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team defeated Spencer-Van Etten in four sets, Thursday, Sept. 5. The final scores were 16-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20.
Cheianne Webster earned four aces, 11 digs, and 17 service points. Rhys Stermer added eight aces, one assist, six kills, three blocks, 11 digs, and 12 service points. Hannah Chapman posted five aces, two kills, five blocks, seven digs, and 12 service points. Jolynn Minnier had three kills, four blocks, five digs, and seven service points.
Seneca Indians Football
The Seneca Indians were beaten by Susquehanna Valley in the season opener, Friday, Sept. 6. The final score was 40-0.
"I thought we gave them a really good first quarter, however the second quarter proved to be the back breaker," said Coach Trevor Holland. "We were down at the half 33-0, and that is a tough hole to dig yourself out of so early in the season."
The combined Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour team was able to limit Susquehanna to only an additional seven points throughout the second half of the game. However, Holland explained the team wasn't able to generate enough consistent offensive plays to get their own points on the board.
Derrick Lewis was 5-for-10 passing, earning 69 yards. Cameron Holland posted another 12 yards, going 2-for-7.
Rushing, Dominick Fazzary had 25 yards on seven carries. Owen Scholtisek added another 24 yards on five carries. Travon Jones had seven carries for 12 yards. Lewis posted nine yards with six carries.
Girls Soccer
The Odessa-Montour girls soccer team lost to Groton Friday, Sept. 6. The final score was 4-1.
Boys Soccer
The Odessa-Montour boys soccer team won in overtime against Groton Thursday, Sept. 5. The Indians finished up 2-1 with both goals coming from Preston Harris.
