Watkins Glen boys basketball takes first at home WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team won their Holiday Tournament, held Jan. 3 and 4, at the field house. In the championship game, the Senecas defeated Greene 70-42. Isaac McIlroy recorded 19 points and was named the Most Valuable Player. Mitchell Pike added 16 points and Adam Pastore 14. In the Friday game, Watkins beat Wellsville 56-36. All-tournament team member Adam Pastore scored 20 points. Owen Scholtisek had 11. The boys stay unbeaten with the tournament victory. Girls basketball The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team lost to Onondaga, 51-42, in the Hoops for Hospital Tournament, Sunday, Dec. 29. Aislinn Klemann led with 14 points, including four three-point shots. Kelsey Kernan had nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Carly Arnold also scored nine points, with two assists, and two steals. Abby Gibson added five points and two rebounds. Jenna Solomon earned three points and five rebounds. The girls beat Phoenix in the tournament opener, Saturday, Dec. 28. The final score was 49-42. Klemann led with 11 points, Kernan had eight. Indoor track The Watkins Glen varsity indoor track team competed at the Section IV Classic, Saturday, Jan. 4. Gabe Planty was first in the 1600 meter run (4:28.23), while Matt Wood placed third in the 1600 meter (4:43.15, a personal best). Nick Wilston was fifth in the long jump (20'3.5", a personal record) and fifth in the triple jump (39'11"). Cale Sutterby tied for fifth in the pole vault (8'0"). Lily Hall finished fifth in the long jump (15'7") and sixth in the triple jump (33'.5"). Watkins competed at Cortland for the Winter Classic, Saturday, Dec. 28. Planty won first in the 1000 meter (2:41.33). Wood placed third in the 1000 meter with (2:47.62). Boyd Barber finished sixth in the shot put with (33'1"). Wrestling The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team took second in the O-M Duals, Saturday, Jan. 4. The combined team topped Cortland, 54-21; Dundee, 48-27; Thomas A. Edison, 66-18; and Whitney Point, 42-30. The only loss was to Spencer-Van Etten/Candor, 45-39. Most Outstanding Wrestler awards were given for each weight class. Morgan Burnham (106) and Branden Davis (113) each earned one.
Odessa-Montour swimming competes at Watkins WATKINS GLEN--Members of the Odessa-Montour boys swimming team competed at the Watkins Glen Invitational, Friday, Jan. 3 and Saturday, Jan. 4. Odessa finished in 11th place overall, while the event was won by Ithaca. Girls basketball The Indians' girls varsity basketball team defeated Dryden, 71-26, Thursday, Jan. 2. Sara Gardner led with 26 points. Grace Vondracek posted 21 points, a career-high, and 10 rebounds. JoLynn Minnier also had a career-high 13 points, as well as eight rebounds. Mallory Rhodes and Autumn Garrison both scored four points. Taylor Cain added two points, while Tassia Garrison had one. Odessa lost to Penn Yan in the consolation game of the Bath Coaches vs. Cancer tournament, Saturday, Dec. 28. The final score was 48-32. Vondracek recorded 11 points, Gardner had 10. Odessa's girls fell to Bath in overtime, 53-49, in the Bath Tournament, Friday, Dec. 27. Kara Reese scored 17 points, all in the first half. Gardner added 16 points. Minnier posted five points, while Vondracek and Garrison each had four points. Rhodes earned two points, while Jessica Carnes had one point. The Indians were beaten by Candor, 50-47, Monday, Dec. 23. Gardner posted 14 points, followed by Reese with 11 points. Carnes scored eight points. Garrison contributed six points, while had Minnier four points. Cain and Rhodes each scored two points. Boys basketball The Odessa-Montour boys varsity basketball team defeated Trumansburg, 46-41, Friday, Jan. 3. Preston Harris had 16 points for the Indians. The Odessa boys lost in the tournament final at Addison, Saturday, Dec. 28. The final score was 60-56. They beat Campbell-Savona the day before 73-58 to make the final. Dundee girls basketball record wins; boys fall DUNDEE--The Dundee girls varsity basketball team defeated Sodus, 40-14, Monday, Jan. 6. Mackenzie Strait led with 17 points and five rebounds. Trisha Edmister added six points, while Makenzie Cratsley, Ally Wood, Savannah Eaves and Abby Miller each had four points. The Lady Scots are now 7-3 on the season. The Lady Scots defeated Romulus, 48-39, Friday, Jan. 3. Cratsley led with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals. Hallie Knapp added 11 points and eight rebounds. Strait posted 10 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. The Dundee girls beat Harley Allendale Columbia, 48-35, Saturday, Dec. 28. Knapp scored 14 points, with 13 rebounds. Strait posted 13 points and seven rebounds. Cratsley contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Scots lost to Williamson, 45-38 as part of the Williamson Holiday Tournament, Friday, Dec. 27. Strait led the Lady Scots with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists. Cratsley added 10 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Knapp had eight points and four rebounds, while Miller added 10 rebounds. Boys basketball The Dundee boys varsity basketball team fell to Romulus, 58-41, Friday, Jan. 3. Blake Machuga scored 13 points, followed by Logan Salvatore and Hunter Crofoot with eight points. Brady Richardson and John Bell both earned four points. Cody Salamendra, Peyton Boudinot, and Steven Webster all recorded two points. The Scots lost to Bloomfield, Saturday, Dec. 28. The final score was 52-47. No additional stats were available. Wrestling The Dundee varsity wrestling team placed fifth at the Odessa-Montour Duals, Saturday, Jan. 4. Senior Logan Corey, junior Kenny Empson Jr. and freshman Travis Bailey all finished with 5-0 records and were named 2020 O-M Dual Tournament Champions. Indoor track Dundee's Matt Wood and Lily Hall joined the Watkins Glen varsity indoor track team to compete in the Section IV Classic held at Cornell, Saturday, Jan. 4. Penn Yan boys top Haverling 64-54; girls win PENN YAN--The Mustangs' boys varsity basketball team defeated Haverling, 64-54, Friday, Jan. 3. Dominic Lafferty led with 15 points. Peter Nicholson posted 13 points, while Kyle Berna had 10 points. Devon Gerhardt earned eight points. Brennan Prather added seven points. Mason Kuver scored five points, followed by David DeSorbo with four. Penn Yan lost to Waterloo, Friday, Dec. 20. The final score was 69-58. Kuver scored 11 points. Nicholson earned 10 points. Gerhardt, Berna, and Lafferty each posted eight points. Prather and DeSorbo each had four points. Girls basketball The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team topped Odessa-Montour, 48-32, Saturday, Dec. 28. Ashley Sisson led with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jenna Curbeau and Sierra Harrison both posted nine points. Kaley Griffin scored eight points, while Joddie Decker had seven points. Jammie Decker earned three points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Mustangs lost to Wellsville, 36-28, Friday, Dec. 27. Joddie Decker and Sisson both earned seven points. Sierra Harrison and Jammie Decker each scored six points. Hayley Andersen added two points. Wrestling Penn Yan's Avery Castner was third in the Newark Regional Girls Wrestling Tournament, Friday, Jan. 3. The event featured 26 teams. The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan varsity wrestling team finished second in the Holley Holiday Duals, Saturday, Dec. 28. The combined team's record was 4-1, beating Campbell-Savona/Bradford, 58-12; East Irondequoit, 72-12; Holley-Kendall, 64-18; and Caledonia-Mumford, 58-22. Bowling The Penn Yan girls varsity bowling team topped Marcus Whitman, 5-0, Thursday, Dec. 19. Andy Kniffin led with a 538. Anella Tillman contributed a 515. Brandee Ellis recorded a 425. Mckelvie Jensen followed with a 414. Aysa Crocker posted a 374, while Amelia LeVea had a 367. The boys also won, 4-1. Cameron Bassage posted a 633. Trenton Samatulski posted a 562, followed by Ben Broome with a 560. Trevor Harris added a 520. Connor Harmon contributed a 466.
Lakers win two games WHITESVILLE--The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team beat Whitesville, 76-15, Friday, Jan. 3. Zak Davis led the Lakers with 18 points. Hunter Ball netted 15 points. The Lakers topped Andover, Thursday, Dec. 19. The final score was 91-33. Chris Becker controlled the game and ended with 23 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Davis recorded 13 points, Ian MacDonald 12, Johnathon Wells 11 and Hunter Ball and CJ Hill each had 10. Thomas Kressly scored seven points, eight assists and five steals, while Michael Beam had five points. Girls basketball The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team defeated Central Christian Academy, 43-35, Friday, Jan. 3. Destiny Hammond and Rorie Whitcomb each had 14 points each. Hannah Hoerter recorded 12 points in the Lakers win, bringing their record to 4-1.
