SPORTS RECAP: Week of 1-22-20

Lady Scots win three; indoor track sets records
DUNDEE--The Lady Scots' varsity basketball team topped Twin Tiers, 49-36, Friday, Jan 17.
Hallie Knapp led with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and five steals. Makenzie Cratsley posted 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Mackenzie Strait had eight points, six assists, and four rebounds. Alexandria Wood, Abigail Miller, and Trisha Edmister each added two points.
Dundee defeated Harley Allendale Columbia, Tuesday, Jan. 14. The final score was 47-36.
Knapp scored 18 points, with 10 rebounds. Wood added 12 points, while Cratsley earned 10 points and 10 rebounds. Strait posted five points, nine assists, and five rebounds. Edmister posted two points and three assists.
The Lady Scots beat Campbell-Savona, 46-16, Monday, Jan. 13.
Cratsley posted 14 points and 12 rebounds. Wood followed with 11 points and six rebounds. Savannah Eaves added eight points and four steals, while Strait contributed six points, five steals, three assists, and three rebounds. Knapp posted four points and 10 rebounds. Edmister earned three points and three rebounds.
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity indoor track teams competed at the Section IV Class Championship, Friday, Jan. 17, to Saturday, Jan. 18.
The girls team took 10th out of 21 schools in Division 2. Lily Hall won first in the triple jump (34'3.25") and second in the long jump (16'2"). Melina Everetts took seventh in the pole vault (6'0").
At the same time, Dundee's Matt Wood competed at the New Balance Games in Manhattan, Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 18. Wood finished 19th in the varsity two mile (10:06.63, a personal best and new Dundee record).
Boys basketball
The Dundee boys varsity basketball team lost to Harley Allendale Columbia, 48-44, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Logan Salvatore had 13 points to lead the Scots. Steven Webster had 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Scots topped Sodus in a home game, Monday, Jan. 13. The final score was 58-57.
Webster made a shot with 12 seconds to go to give the Scots the lead and the defense held off Sodus for the win.
Salvatore led with 23 points and six rebounds. Webster had 14 points and ten rebounds. Blake Machuga posted 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Hunter Crofoot had four points and Cody Salamendra two.
Bowling
The Dundee girls and boys varsity bowling teams both beat Honeoye, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
The girls won 5-0. Cassie Morrissette led with a 438. Jaedyn Brewer posted a 337, while Sam Hunt had a 333. Cheyenne Cummings bowled a 318 and Edele Morgan contributed a 305.
The boys won 4-1. Stephen Smith posted a 666. Aaron Bruzda and Justin Keech both had a 347 total. Aaron Ayers added a 332. Skye Strickland earned a 320.
The Scots' varsity bowling teams topped Geneva, Monday, Jan. 13.
Dundee's boys won 5-0. Smith led with a 597. Bruzda earned a 360, followed by Keech with 349.
The girls won 4-1. Morrissette posted a 438. Claudya Lyons earned a 382.

Penn Yan boys and girls bowling tops Honeoye
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan boys and girls varsity bowling teams topped Honeoye, 5-0, Thursday, Jan. 16.
Cameron Bassage led the boys with a 626. Ben Broome had a 607. Connor Anderson contributed a 570. Connor Harmon added a 535.
For the girls, Anella Tillman posted a 597. Andy Kniffin followed with a 552, while Brandee Ellis earned a 491.
The Mustangs' boys team defeated Newark, 4-1, Thursday, Jan. 15.
Bassage bowled a 616. Harmon added a 613, followed by Broome with a 597. Jon Mashewske and Harris both posted a 555. Trenton Samatulski contributed a 551.
The girls lost 5-0. Ellis led with a 595. Kniffin bowled a 566. Tillman contributed a 535. McKelvie Jensen posted a 451, while Amelia LeVea had a 389.
Boys basketball
The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team lost to Palmyra-Macedon, 45-44, in a close game, Friday, Jan. 17.
Mason Kuver scored 10 points, while Devon Gerhardt and Dominic Lafferty both added eight points. Griffin Emerson posted six points, Brennan Prather five and Peter Nicholson four.
Penn Yan fell to Geneva, Wednesday, Jan. 15. The final score was 56-54.
Lafferty led with 17 points. Kuver posted 13 points, followed by Kyle Berna with nine. David DeSorbo scored seven points. Gerhardt and Prather both earned four points.
The Mustangs topped World of Inquiry, 67-60, Monday, Jan. 13.
Kuver led with 24 points. Berna contributed 13 points. Gerhardt added 10 points, followed by DeSorbo and Prather both with six. Lafferty added three points.
Girls basketball
The Lady Mustangs' varsity basketball team won against Palmyra-Macedon, 51-39, Friday, Jan. 17.
Joddie Decker led with 17 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Jenna Curbeau had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals. Ashley Sisson posted 10 points and six rebounds. Sierra Harrison scored six points, followed by Jammie Decker with four points and eight rebounds. Hayley Andersen had three points.
Penn Yan beat Geneva, 67-34, in an away game, Wednesday, Jan. 15. No further stats were provided.
Wrestling
The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan varsity wrestling team lost to Midlakes, 42-33, Thursday, Jan. 16.
Ayden Mowry (120) beat Chase Peacock by decision, 5-4. Damien Snyder (138) pinned Matt Raes in 0:45. Justin Smith (170) won against Tyler Crough in 0:44. Chad Smith (152), Brendan Hawley (160), and Mason Petersen (285) won by forfeit.

Lakers fall in overtime, 64-58
The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team lost to Alfred Almond in overtime, Friday, Jan. 17. The final score was 64-58. Zak Davis led the Lakers with 16 points.
The Lakers defeated Campbell-Savona, 58-56, Tuesday, Jan. 14. Davis led with 18 points. Chris Becker posted 12 points.
Girls basketball
The Lakers' girls varsity basketball team defeated Alfred Almond, 50-29, Friday, Jan. 17.
Hannah Hoerter and Rorie Whitcomb both scored 11 points. Jillian Underhill followed with 10 points. Lydia Dluzak and Destiny Hammond each posted seven points. Samantha Welch earned three points, while Maddie Sprague had one point.
The Hammondsport girls topped Campbell-Savona, Wednesday, Jan. 15. The final score was 42-20.
Hoerter and Whitcomb both scored 16 points. Underhill contributed six points. Vittoria Cateni and Sprague each posted two points.
Hammondsport beat Genesee Valley, 47-25, Monday, Jan. 13.
Whitcomb led with 14 points, followed by Hoerter with 13. Sprague scored seven points. Underhill added six points, while Dluzak had five.

Planty sets records at Manhattan meet; basketball wins
ITHACA and MANHATTAN--The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity indoor track teams competed in the Section IV Class Championship, Friday, Jan. 17, to Saturday, Jan. 18.
The girls team took 10th out of 21 schools in Division 2. Lily Hall won first in the triple jump (34'3.25") and second in the long jump (16'2"). Melina Everetts took seventh in the pole vault (6'0"). Madelyn Suddaby placed eighth in the triple jump (29'1.75").
The boys were 11th overall in Division 2. Nick Wilston finished fourth in the long jump (19'3.75") and sixth in the triple jump (38'10.5"). Sam Thorsland took sixth in the 1600 meter run (5:01.29). Boyd Barber was seventh in the weight throw (32'5.25").
At the same time, two athletes competed at the New Balance Games in Manhattan, Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 18.
Watkins' Gabe Planty took fourth in the invitational two mile run (9:24.74), fourth in the 3200 meter (9:21.84), and fifth in the 3000 meter (8:49.77). All three events were part of the same run, with timers capturing each runners' placement at the given lengths.
"Gabe just reset all three Watkins Glen records in one swoop," said Coach Rod Weeden. "Gabe set a new two mile record for indoor as no one has set one before, however he broke his own 3200 meter record by over 20 seconds and broke the 3000 meter record previously held by Matt Gill."
Planty has now qualified for the state meet automatically with his time in the 3200 meter, as well as qualified for New Balance Nationals the week after states with his times.
Dundee's Matt Wood finished 19th in the varsity two mile, the second day of the event with a 10:06.63 (a personal best and new Dundee record).
Wrestling
The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team placed 10th in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) tournament, Friday, Jan. 17.
Joshua Beckley (182) placed second, with a 2-1 record. Dominick Fazzary (138) placed fourth with a 2-2 record, while Morgan Burnham (106) was also fourth with a 1-3 record. Brandon Davis (113) and Tristian Harrington (220) both finished in fifth place, with 2-2 and 1-2 records respectively.
The combined wrestling team defeated Chenango Valley, 42-29, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Braiden Ventra (170) pinned Anthony Holt in 1:21. Joshua Beckley (195) beat Elijah Davies in 0:29. Tristian Harrington (220) won over Elton Richards-Follette in 5:35. Gabe Williams (126), Jaden Smith (132), Damyan Metris (145), and Paiton Bailey (182) won by forfeit.
Boys basketball
The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team defeated Addison in a non-league game, Saturday, Jan. 18. The final score was 56-36.
Mitchell Pike recorded 18 points and Owen Scholtisek 16.
The Senecas' beat Trumansburg, Friday, Jan. 17, 65-38. Adam Pastore paced the Senecas with 15 points and Scholtisek scored 11.
Watkins' boys basketball team topped Candor, 53-49, Tuesday, Jan. 14. Isaac McIlroy had 19 points, Pastore scored 11.
Bowling
The Watkins Glen boys and girls varsity bowling teams both topped Dryden, 4-0, Thursday, Jan. 16.
Matt Irwin led the boys with a 593. RJ Bannon earned a 577, followed by Mykal Cody with a 504. Caleb Smith contributed a 481.
For the girls, Ava Cowan posted a 404. Makenzie Kellogg earned a 371. Alyiah Clink-Bentley followed with a 351.
The Senecas' boys bowling team beat Odessa-Montour, 3-1, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Bannon bowled a 512. Smith earned a 506, while Irwin had a 446.
The girls lost 4-0. Clink-Bentley had a 434 and Kellogg bowled a 398.
Girls basketball
The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team won against Candor, 44-21, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Abigail Gibson scored 10 points, including a pair of three-point shots, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kelsey Kernan posted eight points, five steals, two rebounds, and two assists. Aislinn Klemann added six points (both three-point shots), four rebounds, and two steals. Amanda Wilbur also had six rebounds. Jenna Solomon earned five points and seven rebounds. Carly Arnold had four points and four rebounds.
Boys swimming
The Watkins Glen boys varsity swim team lost to Lansing, 93-60, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Jordan Avery was first in the 100 backstroke (1:14.02) and second in the 50 freestyle (26.66). Liam Smith took second in the 200 freestyle (2:24.61) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:18.17). Scott Brubaker finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:42.13). Ben Swinnerton was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.15).

Odessa-Montour girls defeat Marathon, 54-34
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team topped Marathon, 54-34, Friday, Jan. 17.
Grace Vondracek led with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Autumn Garrison posted 14 points and six rebounds. Sara Gardner contributed 11 points and four assists. Kara Reese had 10 points. JoLynn Minnier earned two points and nine rebounds, while Mallory Rhodes also scored two points.
"They are in second place in the North Small [division] and have had some pretty good wins, so this was a great effort for us to win this convincingly tonight," said Coach Greg Gavich.
With the win, Odessa's record is 8-5.
The Indians beat Thomas A. Edison, 59-35, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Gardner led with 16 points, including five three-point shots. Vondracek added 14 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Garrison earned 14 points (a season-high) and eight rebounds. Minnier posted seven points and 12 rebounds. Reese had three points, while Jessica Carnes and Hannah Chapman both scored two points. Rhodes added the final point.
Boys basketball
Odessa-Montour's boys varsity basketball team lost to Marathon, Friday, Jan. 17. The final score was 68-48.
Paden Grover scored 10 points in the game, Preston Harris had eight.
Wrestling

Nick DeLong took first in the 100 backstroke (1:13.52) and first in the 500 freestyle (6:28.44). Brett Walters was first in the 100 freestyle (58.31) and 200 individual medley (2:28.98).
Micah Brewster placed first in the 200 freestyle (2:17.88). Brock Sgrecci was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.22). Jon Spencer finished first in the 100 fly (1:18.02). Caleb Thomas placed first in the 50 free (28.68).
The Odessa swimmers won a close meet against Greene, 76-75, Wednesday, Jan. 15.
The 200 freestyle relay team (Thomas, Sgrecci, Noah Hollenbeck, and Spencer) took first with a time of 1:59.97. Walters won first in the 50 freestyle (25.56) and the 100 freestyle (57.16). Justin Roucco was first in the 100 backstroke (1:10.87). Sgrecci led in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.58).
"We were down a few swimmers due to illness and injury, and a number of disqualifications almost cost us the meet," said Coach Terri Brace.
Bowling
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity bowling team beat Watkins Glen, 4-0, Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Jana Arias led with a 591. Sarah Barr posted a 402, followed by Hannah Barr with 356. Cortney Davis earned a 325. Taryn Hoyt contributed a 322.
The boys lost 3-1. Dominic Elliott had a 473, while Eric Rumsey had a 426. Wes Wade posted a 396.
