SPORTS RECAP: Week of 3-11-20
Penn Yan girls basketball claims sectional title ROCHESTER-The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team won the Section V Class B2 crown, Saturday, March 7, at the Gates Chili field house. The Lady Mustangs beat Avon, 55-39, to win the program's first title in 25 years. Joddie Decker scored 15 points in the championship game. Sierra Harrison recorded 11 and Jenna Curbeau 10. Kaley Griffin had nine points. Decker and Curbeau were named to the all-star team at the conclusion of the game and Harrison was recognized as the most valuable player. With the win, Penn Yan moves on to the state tournament against Dansville, Tuesday, March 10. The results of the game were after the press time for this edition. The Lady Mustangs topped Mynderse, 52-41, in the sectional semifinals, Tuesday, March 3. Decker led with 24 points. Harrison added 16. Ashley Sisson had 13 rebounds. Boys basketball The Mustangs' boys varsity basketball team lost to Avon, 66-48, in the Section V Class B2 semifinals, Wednesday, March 4. Mason Kuver led with 18 points. Peter Nicholson netted 10 points, including two three-point shots. Brennan Prather posted seven points. Kyle Berna and Griffin Emerson each scored five points. Devon Gerhardt added a three-point shot. Bowling Penn Yan bowling coach Mindy Johnson was named the Finger Lakes East Coach of the Year, while nine Mustangs athletes were also honored. Cameron Bassage was named to the boys' All-Star First Team. Ben Broome and Trevor Harris were named to the All-Star Second Team. Jon Mashewske and Connor Harmon were honorable mentions. For the girls, Anella Tillman and Andy Kniffin were named to the First Team. McKelvie Jensen and Brandee Ellis were awarded honorable mentions.
Dundee Dundee's girls varsity bowling Coach Courtney Eddinger was named the Finger Lakes West Coach of the Year. Kayla Andrews and Cassie Morrissette were both named to the West's All-Star First team. Samantha Hunt, Jaedyn Brewer, and Cheyenne Cummings were named to the All-Star Second Team. Edele Morgan and Claudya Lyons received honorable mentions. For the boys, Stephen Smith was placed on the All-Star First Team. Austin States was named to the Second Team. Indoor track Dundee's Matt Wood competed at the New York State Indoor Track Meet held on Staten Island, Saturday, March 7. Wood finished 29th overall and sixth in his heat for the 1600 meter run with a 4:39.42 time. "It was a bittersweet event for the seniors who had an awesome indoor season filled with lots of great memories and many broken records," said coach Rod Weeden.
Watkins Glen boys come up short in championship CORTLAND-The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team fell to Newfield in the Section IV Class C championship, Saturday, March 7. The Senecas pulled within three points, 63-60, in a game where they were down double-digits each quarter. Newfield was the number three seed and Watkins Glen was number one. Max Evans, Isaac McIlroy and Adam Pastore led the scoring effort with 17, 15 and 15 points, respectively. Owen Scholtisek added 10 points. The Senecas topped Greene in the sectional semifinals, Tuesday, March 3. The final score was 63-52. Pastore recorded 21 points, while Evans had 15. Indoor track Watkins' Gabe Planty and Dundee's Matt Wood competed at the New York State Indoor Track Meet held on Staten Island, Saturday, March 7. Planty was 18th in the 3200 meter run with a 9:34.86 time, also taking 11th in his heat. Wood finished 29th overall and sixth in his heat for the 1600 meter run with a 4:39.42 time.
