Dundee plans for bowling as winter sport
DUNDEE--Dundee Central School District Superintendent Kelly Houck informed the school board Thursday, Nov. 12 the only sport currently scheduled for the winter season is bowling. Houck added there has been a lack of official information regarding what plans or alterations are currently being discussed by school athletic organizations. "We anticipate further direction, but right now it is very much a waiting game," Houck said. Houck also announced the state education department has canceled January regents. "If a student has successfully passed a course they were scheduled to take a regents exam for, they will be given a credit where that exam will be waived forever... and they will be given a graduation credit," Houck said. Houck added she expected a similar courtesy to be extended to students by the state regarding June regents as well. "I applaud the (Department of Education) for taking this step to alleviate state testing and let teachers focus on what they want to focus on which is closing the achievement gap," Houck stated. "We do applaud their efforts and look forward to further relief in June." While students resumed in-person learning Monday, Nov. 16, Houck said the district has started the process of distributing mobile internet hotspots to students who need them so they can access virtual classes and online learning. "This will help us for the next time we have to go remote, and hopefully there is no next time," Houck added. "But just because we might not go remote doesn't change that things done in the evening for school often require internet capability." In what was her first meeting, Student Representative Courtney Gibson was asked by board members and Houck how remote learning has been going for her and her peers. "The switch to remote learning was very easy," Gibson commented. "The WiFi has been a little issue. But it is fairly simple right now and our teachers really outline everything which has been really helpful." When asked about the upcoming return to in-person learning, Gibson agreed with the board that she was excited to return to school.
