Work at future Amazon site in Bath to begin
STEUBEN COUNTY--Town of Bath officials have confirmed that the creation of a new Amazon facility at the old Mercury Aircraft building remains on track to begin construction in the spring of 2022. Things could even begin sooner if the weather breaks. "We would love to start in March if the weather breaks," said Bath Supervisor Ron Smith. The project has faced a number of delays, as town officials were initially hopeful that everything would be complete by 2021. However, the New York State Department of Transportation previously requested a left turn northbound lane on State Route 54 be added for the increased traffic into the facility which delayed construction. "They have since worked that problem out," Smith said. The site of the facility is slated to be the former Mercury Aircraft building behind Simmons-Rockwell with some money coming from outside sources to improve the area infrastructure. The Steuben County Industrial Development Agency has already approved $100,000 to improve State Route 54 at Industrial Park Road which serves the 77,000 square foot building. As a result of the project, Smith said he expects about 160 jobs, plus or minus, to be created. "Everything is moving forward, it is just a matter of the weather breaking so they can get out there and do the upgrades they need to do. It's still a go that's for sure," Smith said. Amazon did not comment after being asked for details.
