SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-15-23
Dundee-Bradford Girls Basketball The Dundee-Bradford girls basketball team closed out the regular season with three wins last week. The BraveScots defeated Marcus Whitman, Romulus and Red Jacket. Against Whitman, the final score was 40-28. Kailey Yeoman led with 17 points and three rebounds. Kendall Parker had 12 points and four rebounds, while Mikayla Schoffner added seven points and 13 rebounds. The BraveScots won against Romulus, 61-24. Parker paced the team with 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Schoffner posted 15 points with eight rebounds and five steals. The team topped Red Jacket, 53-31. Yeoman recorded 18 points, Parker had 15 and Schoffner added 10.
Boys Basketball The Dundee-Bradford boys basketball team defeated Red Jacket 51-46, Wednesday, Feb. 8. Leading scorers for the BraveScots were senior Nick Slavick with 15 points and 11 rebounds, senior Logan Buchanan adding 14 points and 10 rebounds, Aidan Webster with 10 points and senior John Bell with eight points and seven steals.
Indoor Track The Dundee-Bradford indoor track team competed at RIT, Saturday, Feb. 11. Top-five finishers included: Hayden Erick (first-high jump 5' 11" and third-triple jump), Madison Hughes (fourth-55m dash), Camden Buchanan (fifth-55m dash and fourth-triple jump) and Logan Buchanan (tied for second-high jump).
Wrestling Top Dundee-Bradford wrestlers participated at the 77th annual wrestling championships and state qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 11. The top three finishers in each weight class advanced to the state finals. While no wrestlers advanced, the team ended a great season with seven wrestlers at the super sectionals.
Penn Yan Girls Basketball The Penn Yan girls basketball team lost to Midlakes, 50-35, Saturday, Feb. 11. Hailey Trank led with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Bailey Cooper posted 10 points and three steals. Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger had five points. The Mustangs lost to Newark, 59-26, Friday, Feb. 10. Trank had 12 points and six rebounds. Miranda-Wiltberger recorded five points and four rebounds. The team defeated Wayne, 36-32, Wednesday, Feb. 8. Trank scored 10 points and Cooper put up nine with seven rebounds.
Boys Basketball The Penn Yan boys basketball team lost to Newark, Friday, Feb. 10. The final score was 66-59. The team also fell to Wayne, 81-43, Tuesday, Feb. 7. Individual stats were not available.
Bowling The Penn Yan bowling team participated in the Finger Lakes East doubles-singles tournament, Wednesday, Feb. 8. Anella Tillman was recognized for the highest Finger Lakes East season average for girls. She averaged 205 for all games against Finger Lakes East opponents. In Girls Doubles A, Tillman and Julia Maldonado earned silver medals. In Girls Doubles B, Bella Miller and Taylor Morse earned silver medals. The Finger Lakes East First Team included Anella Tillman-girls and Colin Johnson-boys. The Finger Lakes East Second Team had Julia Maldonado-girls and Connor Andersen-boys.
Wrestling Wrestlers from Penn Yan competed at the 77th annual wrestling championships and state qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 11. Jayden Reid (145) was the top finisher for the team with a fifth-place result. The top three advanced to the state tournament.
Hammondsport Girls Basketball The Hammondsport girls basketball team beat Alfred-Almond, Thursday, Feb. 9. The final score was 42-20. Nichole Pratt led with 19 points. LaZell Locey added 10 points with seven rebounds. The Lakers lost to Avoca-Prattsburgh, 33-31, Tuesday, Feb. 7. Danica Dresser scored 13 points with six rebounds and five steals. Samantha Pratt had 10 points and six rebounds.
Boys Basketball The Hammondsport boys basketball team lost to Arkport-Canaseraga, 58-50, Friday, Feb. 10. The team was defeated by Jasper-Troupsburg, 67-18, Wednesday, Feb. 8.
Wrestling (Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport) The wrestling team competed at the 77th annual wrestling championships and state qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 11. While no wrestlers advanced, the team had six representatives at the super sectional match.
Watkins Glen Swimming The Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour swimming team hosted the IAC Championships in Watkins Glen, Saturday, Feb. 11. The Schuyler Storm took the top spot with 467 points. They were followed by Lansing with 420 points. First-place finishes were recorded by: Liam Smith (500 free), Ryan Dean (100 backstroke) and Jon Spencer (100 breaststroke). Up next is the sectional championship which will also be at Watkins Glen, Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 18.
Boys Basketball The Watkins Glen boys basketball team lost to Newark Valley, 57-48, Tuesday, Feb. 7. Jacob Yontz paced the team with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Joseph Sutterby added nine points and six rebounds, while Alex Holmes added five points.
Girls Basketball The Watkins Glen girls basketball team lost to Edison, Thursday, Feb. 9. The final score was 38-29. Brianna Hatch and Jenna Solomon led the team with eight points each. Addie Coolican recorded five points. The Senecas lost to Newark Valley, 41-33, Tuesday, Feb. 7. Rachel Vickio scored 13 points and Solomon had eight.
Bowling The Watkins Glen bowling teams faced Waverly, Tuesday, Feb. 7. The girls won 3-1 and the boys fell 4-0. Leading the girls was Aubrey Kellogg with a 554. Ava Cowan had a 552. Mykel Cody paced the boys with a 570. The bowling team also defeated Dundee-Bradford, Monday, Feb. 6. Both teams got a 4-0 win. Kellogg recorded the top score for the girls with a 521 and Cody led the boys with a 601. Indoor Track Watkins Glen indoor track athlete Maddie Tuttle took first at the Section 4 championship, Friday, Feb. 10. She competed in the 1500m racewalk and won with a school-record 8:24.46.
Odessa-Montour Girls Basketball The Odessa-Montour girls basketball team won against Lansing, 60-54, Thursday, Feb. 9. Gina Gavich led with 29 points, a career-high. Hannah Nolan posted 14 points and had 11 rebounds. Reagan Reese added 10 points and Tori Brewster had seven. The basketball team defeated Candor, 50-30, Tuesday, Feb. 7. Nolan scored 21 points with eight rebounds and seven steals. Brewster posted 11 points and Gavich had eight.
Boys Basketball The Odessa-Montour boys basketball team lost to Candor, Thursday, Feb. 9. The final score was 67-34. Tyler Malnoske scored 14 points for the Grizzlies.
Wrestling The combined wrestling team competed at Binghamton in the sectional tournament, Saturday, Feb. 11. Recording a place finish was Jackie Mace in the female division, fourth. Other representatives for the Schuyler Storm included Lucas Hoffman, Jed Lynch and Aiden Summers.
