Dundee tax levy increases 2.5 percent
DUNDEE—Village officials adopted the 2011-12 general fund budget of $919,977 during a meeting on Tuesday, April 12.
The figure results in a 2.5 percent increase in the tax levy. The current rate per $1,000 of assessed value is $12,176.34. The new rate will be $12,463.55. The tax on a home assessed at $100,000 would increase by $29 per year.
State retirement increased by $13,958. Employee health insurance decreased by $13,191. The decrease in health insurance cost was a result of concessions made by village employees.
No increase in sewer or water rates are included in those budgets. Water usage is expected to drop by $33,750 and sewer by $45,265. The decrease reflects changes in use at Dundee Foods.
A public hearing preceded the vote. There were no members of the public at the hearing.
In other business: Heard complaints about items being discarded at the transfer station when the facility is closed. The items left recently were mattresses. The board reminded the public that nothing is to be taken to the transfer station except during the hours of operation on Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. The board may take steps to control access to the site if abuse continues.
• The board learned Little League is hosting a skills competition on Saturday, June 11. Many activities are planned, including a parade.
• A request from the American Legion Auxiliary to hold a carnival May 20 and 21 was approved.
• Streets Superintendent Andy Howell reported a “Good Samaritan” had picked up brush in the cemetery.
• Four new members of the fire department were approved. They are Daniel Gotshall, Benjamin Hill, Kevin Sensenig and Justus Martin.
• The board approved updating the code book to contain changes. The cost is estimated at between $2,300 and $3,000.
• The board reviewed information about the Starkey Sludge Law and a program to collect electronics and scrap at the town barn on Dundee Glenora Road.
• Village clerk Christine Sutherland relayed a request from the Merchants Association. The group requested parking signs to indicate the location of the two municipal parking lots in the core business district. The board agreed to install the signs. The Merchants Association will be responsible for purchasing the signs and the village will furnish the poles.
• The village received a request from Knapp & Schlappi Lumber for a larger sign on Main Street indicating the location of the business. The board asked for more specifics.
• Wastewater Treatment Plant operator Howard Sautter was given permission to purchase needed items for the plant. The items, including a rebuilt pump and standby pump shaft are estimated to cost $7,300. Purchase of the items had been postponed for two years.
• The cost to property owners for sidewalk replacement is $10.76 per linear foot.
• Assistant Superintendent of Streets Doug Jayne updated the board on the condition of Well 2. Jayne would like to get quotes for redevelopment of the well. The well was installed in 1952. The redevelopment process would include underwater video inspection and cleaning. The work needs to be done to return the well to a higher yield. The estimated cost is $17,400.
The next meeting of the Dundee Village board will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 in the village hall on Union Street.
