WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour girls varsity swimming teams competed in the 2012 Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship held at Watkins, Saturday, Oct. 27. Seven schools competed. Lansing took first place overall. Watkins was third and Odessa was fifth.
The Senecas won the IAC Championship in diving. The divers' results included third place by Lexi Castellaneta (318.60), fifth place by Lindsey Suddaby (311.35), sixth place by Sarah LaMascus (220.85), and eighth by Chelsea Kennard (160.70). Abby Cocca pulled her way to finish first and become the 2012 IAC Champion in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.44) followed by her teammate, freshman Katherine Meehan who took third (1:20.35). The 200 meter relay team (Victoria Wixson, Cocca, Sam Gill, and Emma Allington) won second with 2:01.67. The distance trio of Sarah Wickham, Alexis Naylor, and Halle Phillips took seventh (2:19.23), eighth (2:24.22), and ninth (2:24.76) overall. Wixson took third in the 200 IM (2:24.66), followed by Gill (2:27.88). Gill also took second place in the 100 fly (1:04.37). Wickham won sixth overall in the 500 free with a personal best time of 6:12.51. Wixson, Cocca, Allington, and Gill were in the 200 free relay and placed third with a season-best race (1:52.23). Wixson finished off her night with her personal best time in the 100 backstroke (1:03.44). "It was a great day for the girls," said Coach Kelsey Wood. "They had some really strong races and I think they were all really excited about their finishes. We really worked technique and breath control this whole week, so the training definitely paid off. The divers did an amazing job and Coach Kim Suddaby did unbelieveable work in prepping them for this meet." For Odessa, Jordan Little and Jenelle Bleiler were named to the IAC All-Star Team by placing in the top three in individual events. Bleiler was the highest placing O-M swimmer, taking second in the 100 breast. Little placed third in both the 200 free (2:10.20) and 500 free (5:58.63), posting personal records in both events. Maia Rumsey took fifth in the 50 free (27.53) and 100 free (1:00.43), posting personal records in both events. Rounds placed sixth in the 100 free. The 200 free (1:52.63) and 400 free (4:10.02) relay teams of Bleiler, Rumsey, Rounds and Little both took fourth. "The girls all swam really well today and I'm excited to see how they do in sectionals next week," said Coach Terri Brace. "The O-M girls had a great meet today, with many of them moving up into higher positions than they were seeded and achieving personal records."
