SPORTS RECAP: Watkins boys take sectional title; Castellaneta wins

CHENANGO VALLEY-The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team claimed the Section IV Class C Championship title at Chenango Valley State Park, Thursday, Nov. 3.
The Senecas competed against 10 other schools in the class. Leading the boys individually was Patrick Hazlitt in first place (16:39.1). Gabe Planty followed in second (16:48.3) and Shawn Rutledge in third (16:54.7). Aaron Planty was fifth (17:10.7) and Sam Hanley sixth (17:14.3).
Sean Holland placed ninth (17:34.7), while Sam Thorsland took 10th (17:57.3). Jacob Carocci was 11th (18:04.7). Daniel Paradiso took 12th overall (18:11.9). Max Evans was 16th (18:27.7).
For the girls, Kai Sutterby was fifth (20:58.8).

Castellaneta wins
The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team took second of nine schools in the Section IV Class C Championship, Wednesday, Nov. 2, to Saturday, Nov. 5.
The Senecas' Lexi Castellaneta won first in diving with a score of 500.90, while Jena Slater was third in diving with a score of 325.30.
Jill Kilcoyne placed third in the 100 yard butterfly (1:06.25). Peighton Cervoni finished third in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.48) and sixth in the 100 yard freestyle (57.89).
Liza Carnes was fourth in the 500 yard freestyle (5:51.26) and sixth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:11.20). Amanda Wilbur took fifth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:07.50) and seventh in the 200 yard IM (2:30.66).
Madi Kilcoyne was seventh in the 100 yard butterfly (1:11.74). Isabella Fazzary placed fifth in the 500 yard freestyle (5:51.91). Sarah Swinnerton was fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:17.97). Allie Gibson finished seventh in the 50 yard freestyle (27.38).
Jill Cantieni was seventh in the 200 yard freestyle (2:13.28) and eighth in the 50 yard freestyle (27.59). Sara Gardner took eighth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:24.41).
The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Elizabeth Kilcoyne, Jill Cantieni, Gardner, and Gibson) was third with 1:48.27. The 200 yard medley relay team (Cervoni, Swinnerton, Wilbur, and Elizabeth Kilcoyne) finished in fourth with a time of 2:03.73.

Lakers fall to Finney in semifinals
The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team lost to number one seed C.G. Finney in the Section V Class D2 semifinals, Wednesday, Nov. 2. The final scores were 25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22. For the Lakers, seeded fourth in Class D2, Shelby Sherman had three aces at the service line. Julia Bennett (pictured) and Luise Greszkowiak recorded eight and five kills respectively. Hammondsport finished the season with a 10-9 record and as the Steuben County League Champions.

Penn Yan runners compete at sectionals
WAYNE--The Penn Yan varsity cross country teams competed in the Section V Class C Championships, Saturday, Nov. 5.
For the girls, Sona Dobronova finished sixth (20:38.8) and qualified for the state meet. Katie Voak was 26th (22:39.2), while Maci Nicholson took 45th (24:26.1). Lydia Anderson finished 66th (26:22.2). Allyssa Johnson finished 69th (26:32.7), followed by Mary Ingram in 70th (26:58.6). Alexis Condrey placed 80th (28:13.7).
For the boys, Ben DeMoras was 19th (18:13.1). Peyton Silliman was 31st (19:04.3). Daniel Tomlinson finished 54th (19:55.8), while Garrett Golden was 62nd (20:23.9). Daniel Jiang was 85th (21:31.2). Jon Gulick took 98th (23:43.7).

Watkins Glen volleyball ends season
TIOGA--The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team fell to Tioga, 25-17, 25-6, Thursday, Nov. 3 and tied Trumansburg, 25-21, 11-25.
Watkins topped Lansing, 25-22, 25-14, 25-21, Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the sectional quarterfinals.
Hanley Elliott recorded 17 service points, three aces, 27 assists, and 15 digs. Mariah Gonzalez had six service points, 15 kills, 15 digs, and five blocks. Amanda Pike earned nine service points, 13 kills, nine digs, and four blocks. Emmie Bond contributed seven service points, one assist, one ace, and eight digs.

Odessa swimmers place sixth
OWEGO-Odessa-Montour's girls varsity swim team placed sixth in the Section IV Class C Championship, Wednesday, Nov. 2, to Saturday, Nov. 5.
Syria Tague finished fourth in the 50 yard freestyle (26.94) and sixth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.62). Tori Reese was fourth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:14.96) and ninth in the 200 yard IM (2:30.42). Emelia Paulisczak finished 13th in the 500 yard freestyle (6:22.90) and 13th in the 200 yard freestyle (2:19.38). Emma Lodge was 14th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:28.39).
The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Tague, Tori Reese, Kara Reese, and Paulisczak) was fifth with 1:53.51. The 200 yard medley relay team (Tague, Emma Lodge, Tori Reese, and Kara Reese) finished sixth in 2:11.60.
