Watkins girls move to semifinals

DRYDEN-The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team defeated Thousand Islands, Saturday, March 11 to advance to the semifinal game in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament. The Senecas took an early lead, 12-10 at the end of the first quarter before expanding it to 28-19 at halftime. Watkins outscored Thousand Islands by six points in the third and nine in the fourth to secure the victory, 56-32, at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
Amanda Pike led with 30 points and five rebounds in the game. Mariah Gonzalez recorded 13 points with seven rebounds and two assists. Taylor Kelly had six points, while Hannah Morse scored five points and added seven rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
With the regional division win, Watkins will now move to the semifinals, Saturday, March 18 against Mekeel Christian Academy. Game time is 12:30 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College. In the New York State Sportswriters Association most recent ranking (through March 5), Watkins Glen was ranked fourth while Mekeel (23-1) was second in New York's Class C. In the other bracket in Class C, is defending state champion South Seneca (number one ranked) and Port Jefferson (number three ranked).
The Watkins Glen girls have a 20-2 record.
