Girls lacrosse moves to Class D championship game ROCHESTER--Penn Yan's girls varsity lacrosse team beat Waterloo, 13-6, in the Section V Class D semifinals, Friday, May 26. Hannah Keech and Elissa Callaway both scored four points. Brenna Voigt added two goals and two assists, while Devin Stahlman also had two goals. Cassie Lafler posted one goal and one assist. Sydney Bloom earned two assists. In goal, Alexandra Cox had eight saves. The Lady Mustangs topped Mynderse, 16-9, in the sectional quarterfinals, Tuesday, May 23. Callaway led with eight goals. Keech and Voigt both scored three goals. Stahlman earned one goal, while Bloom posted five assists. Goalie Cox had seven saves, while Hanna Brodman added three. Track and field The Penn Yan girls varsity track and field team placed 9th at the Section V Class B Championship, Friday, May 26. The boys were 13th. Emma Harling was first in the shot put (32'6.5"). Joddie Decker took second in the 1500 meter run (4:56.65) and second in the 3000 meter run (10:49.09). Ben DeMoras took third in the 1600 meter run (4:38.81) and third in the 3200 meter run (10:22.53). Kyle Ingerick was sixth in the triple jump (39'1"), eighth in the long jump (20'3"), and eighth in the 100 meter dash (11.85). Tennis The Penn Yan varsity tennis team lost to Attica, 3-2, in the sectional team tournament, Tuesday, May 23. The Mustangs earned a win in singles and doubles. Garrett Warren defeated Tracy Rudgers, 6-1, 6-1. Paul Pereira and Austin Lafferty beat Susan Huber and Victroia Kolankowski, 6-0, 6-3. The losing scores were: Jack Arnold, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2; Eden Slocum, 6-1, 6-1; and Jarett Alexander and Blaise Cox, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Penn Yan lacrosse advances to sectional finals WATERLOO-The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team topped Bath, 16-4, in the Section V Class D semifinals, Saturday, May 27. Austin Blumbergs led with five goals. Ben Emerson posted three goals and four assists, while Brandon Smith scored three points. Conner Fingar added two goals. Dylan Stape, Jared Calice, and Will Rogers each had one goal. Stape also earned four assists, while Bryan Duran had one. In goal, Jeff Kinyoun posted seven saves and Kyle Welker three. Penn Yan blanked Mynderse, 16-0, in the sectional quarterfinals, Wednesday, May 24. Austin Blumbergs and Emerson both posted five goals and an assist. Stape had three goals and one assist. Rogers and Calice both posted one goal and one assist, while Chase Blumbergs also scored once. Fingar assisted five times. In goal, Kinyoun and Welker each had one save.
Conley, Roote take first at track sectionals LYONS-The Hammondsport boys varsity track and field team was third at the Section V Class D Championships, Saturday, May 27. The girls placed 10th overall. For the boys, Dillan Conley finished first in the 1600 meter run (4:44.41). Cameron Roote took first in the long jump (20'6") and fifth in the high jump (5'4"). Thomas Kressly was second in the 3200 meter run (10:21.37). Jared Raab placed fourth in the 800 meter run (2:08.26), while Nicco Byer was fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (19.06). For the girls, Julia Bennett placed first in the triple jump (32'10.5") and fifth in the shot put (25'7"). Lauren Robbins took second in the long jump (15'0"). Tennis The Prattsburgh-Hammondsport varsity tennis team was blanked by Elmira Notre Dame, 5-0, Thursday, May 25. The scores were: Troy Sanford, 6-3, 6-1; Tommy Morris, 6-0, 6-0; Colin Drain, 6-1, 6-4; Benjamin Fingar and Rhett Presler, 6-1, 6-4; and Bryce Santacroce and Brendan Wagner, 6-0, 6-0. Prattsburgh-Hammondsport lost to Kendall, 3-2, in the team sectionals tournament, Wednesday, May 24. Drain topped Nathan Warters, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Fingar and Presler beat Christopher Butlin and Cameron Zinsmeister, 7-5, 7-6(8-6). The varsity tennis team topped Elba, 4-1, Tuesday, May 23. Sanford beat Mark Anauo, 6-0, 7-6(7-5). Drain won against Memphis Chamberlain, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Fingar and Presler defeated Garrett Downs and Dixie Hirsch, 6-1, 6-3. Santacroce and Wagner topped Alan Vlack and Devon Reigle, 6-4, 7-5.
Dundee boys track team finishes second LYONS-The Dundee boys varsity track and field team took second in the Section V Class D Championships, Saturday, May 27. Wylie Hall took first in the triple jump (40'4.5") and second in the long jump (20'6"). Tyler Brace won first in the high jump (5'9"), third in the triple jump (39'0"), and third in the long jump (20'4"). Sam Richards was second in the pole vault (10'6"). Matt Wood placed third in the 1600 meter run (4:47.62). Billy Bowers finished third in the pole vault (10'0"). In the girls long jump, Emily Oughterson finished 13th (12'10"), followed by Hallie Knapp in 15th (11'8.75"). The girls' 4x100 meter relay team finished in 14th (1:00.88).
Odessa-Montour boys take third, girls fourth in Class D MARATHON-The Odessa-Montour boys varsity track and field team placed third and the girls fourth at the Section IV Class D Championships, Wednesday, May 24. The top three finishers in each event advance to the State Qualifier at Union Endicott, Wednesday, May 31, and Vestal, Thursday, June 1. For the boys, Andy Fudala took first in the pole vault (13'0") and second in the 110 meter hurdles (16.11). Zach Elliott was second in the shot put (46'6") and second in the discus (133'6"). Paden Grover finished third in the high jump (5'8"). Jake Zimmer was fourth in the 100 meter dash (12.01), while Jeremiah Lynch took fourth in the pole vault (10'6"). The 400 meter relay team (Fudala, Noah Angle, Preston Harris, and Zimmer) finished fourth in 47.42. For the girls, Kennedey Heichel was second in the pole vault (8'6") and third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:14.41). Jaylin Rumsey took third in the shot put (30'6.5") and third in the discus (89'3"). Nadia Simpson placed third in the 100 meter dash (13.27).
Local golfers advance to states The Watkins Glen girls varsity golf team took third in the Section IV tournament, Thursday, May 25. Hanley Elliott (center above) led with a 93, finishing in sixth overall and advancing to the state tournament. Also for Watkins, Gabi Decker golfed a 100. Courtney Irwin posted a 112, while Meghan Hayes had 118. The Indians' girls varsity golf team took fourth in the Section IV tournament. Gillian Clark (third from left) recorded a 96 for ninth place, advancing to the state tournament. Catherine Rounds posted a 111. Eliza Starkweather golfed a 120, while Gabby Fazzary had a 131.
Watkins Glen track competes at sectionals TRUMANSBURG-The Watkins Glen boys varsity track and field team placed sixth and the girls 13th at the Section IV Class C Championship, Thursday, May 25, at Trumansburg. The top three finishers in each event advance to the State Qualifier in Union Endicott, Wednesday, May 31, and Vestal, Thursday, June 1. For the boys, Shawn Rutledge won first in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:11.06) and fifth in the 3200 meter run (10:34.37). Patrick Hazlitt finished first in the 800 meter run (1:56.21), setting a stadium record. Gabe Planty was first in the 3200 meter run (9:57.67). Aaron Planty took second in the 1600 meter run (4:42.22). The 4x400 relay team of Gabe Planty, Aaron Planty, Hazlitt, and Casen Weeden finished third (3:44.80). For the girls, Julya Slater placed second the steeplechase (8:28.48). The 4x400 relay team of Isobel Scheffey, Jena Slater, Kia Sutterby, and Haley Dean took fifth (4:38.95). Sutterby was fifth in the 800 meter run (2:33.83). Boys Golf The Watkins boys varsity golf team was second at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference match last week. Ryan Clark led with a 87. Dryden took the top spot in the event. The boys varsity golf team placed seventh in the Section IV Class C tournament, Monday, May 23. Clark led the team with a 88. Patrick Bannon followed with a 94, while Jacob Carocci had a 99. Sam Hanley posted a 102, Alex Gibson a 105 and Max Schimizzi a 109.
