SPORTS RECAP: Week of 6/7/17

Fudala advances to state meet
Odessa-Montour's Andy Fudala advances to the New York state track and field meet after winning the 110 meter hurdles at the state qualifier, Thursday, June 1. The state meet will be held Friday, June 9. Fudala took first in the 110 meter hurdles with a 15.44 time. Fudala was also third in the pole vault (14'0").
Zach Elliott took fourth in the discus (139'10"). Paden Grover finished 14th in the high jump (5'6").
For the girls, Nadia Simpson was sixth in the 100 meter dash (12.97). Kennedey Heichel placed 12th in the pole vault (8'0") and 22nd in the 400 meter hurdles (1:14.84). Jaylin Rumsey took 13th in the shot put (30'4.5") and 15th in the discus (87'2"). Hannah Bruno finished 14th in the long jump (14'5.75").
Clark shoots 198 at Bethpage
Odessa's Gillian Clark competed at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championships, Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. The match was played at Bethpage State Park (Yellow). Clark recorded a 94 the first day and 104 the second.

Hazlitt takes first
Watkins' Patrick Hazlitt advances to the New York state track and field meet after winning the 800 meter run at the state qualifier, Wednesday, May 31. The state meet will be held Friday, June 9. Hazlitt placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.52.
Also placing for Watkins was Shawn Rutledge in fourth overall and second in Division 2 for the Steeplechase (10:19.63). Gabe Planty placed fourth overall and third in Division 2 in the 3200 meter run (9:50.15). Aaron Planty took 14th in the 1600 meter run (4:48.11).
Jena Slater took 14th in the pole vault (7'6"). Julya Slater was 15th in the Steeplechase (8:41.07). Kai Sutterby placed 21st in the 1500 meter run (5:22.54).
Elliott posts second round 91
Hanley Elliott competed for Watkins Glen at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association golf championships, Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4. The Par 72 Bethpage State Park Yellow course was used for the tournament. Elliott carded a 100 the first round and 91 the second for a combined 191.

Mustangs win Class D sectional; fall in state game
ROCHESTER-The Mustangs' boys varsity lacrosse team fell in the first round of the state championships, Saturday, June 3, to the Section VI champion, Akron.
Penn Yan took the lead early in the game and by the third quarter was in front, 8-5. However, Akron came back in the final quarter to score four more points to Penn Yan's one. The regular game ended with a 9-9 tie and Akron would go on to win in double overtime.
Conner Fingar posted five goals, with two assists. Austin Blumbergs added three goals and one assist, while Dylan Stape scored once. Ben Emerson had two assists. In goal, Jeff Kinyoun earned six saves and Jared Calice one save. The Mustangs end the season with a 10-10 record.
The Penn Yan lacrosse team won their seventh consecutive and 22nd total sectional title, Wednesday, May 31 at St. John Fisher College. This was the Mustangs first title in Class D, a new division formed in 2017.
The second seeded Penn Yan boys improved to 10-9 on the season with the Wednesday victory over Waterloo. Penn Yan dominated in the game and won 13-6.
Blumbergs scored five goals and had two assists. Class D All Tournament Most Valuable Player Conner Fingar recorded three goals and also had two assists. Emerson contributed a pair of goals and assists, while Stape, Brandon Smith and Will Rogers each had one goal.
In the cage, Kinyoun had two saves and Kyle Welker one.
In addition to Fingar, Emerson, Stape, Blumbergs, Coty Bailey and Dakota Miller were also named to the All Tournament Team.
Girls Lacrosse
The Penn Yan girls varsity lacrosse team lost to Palmyra-Macedon in the Section V Class D championship game, Tuesday, May 30.
Pal-Mac jumped to an early lead in the game and expanded it to 13-2 by halftime. Both teams scored three times in the second half to bring the final score to 16-5.
Fourth seeded Penn Yan ends with a 12-7 season record. Pal-Mac was the second seed. Individual stats were not reported.
Track and field
Penn Yan's Joddie Decker advances to the state track and field championship after winning the Division 2 1500 meter run at the New York state qualifier, Friday, June 2.
The state meet will be held Friday, June 9, to Saturday, June 10, at Union-Endicott. Decker took first in the 1500 meter run with a 4:56.11 time. She also placed third in the 3000 meter run (10:51.20).
Emma Harling was third in the shot put (34'4.25"). Ben DeMoras finished fourth in the 1600 meter run (4:36.40).

Dundee Scots compete at state qualifier
PENFIELD-Dundee had two athletes place at the track and field New York state qualifier, Friday, June 2.
Tyler Brace took seventh in the high jump for Division 2, with a height of 5'10". Wylie Hall placed seventh in the Division 2 triple jump, with a distance of 39'10".
