SPORTS RECAP: Week of 9-20-17

Cross country runners take first; volleyball wins
ONTARIO CENTER--The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team took first in the Division 3 Boys Pre State race held at Wayne, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Aaron Planty led the Senecas in fourth place overall (16:58.58). Gabe Planty took seventh (17:07.73), while Sean Holland finished 25th (18:00.43). Max Evans was 27th (18:09.6), followed by Sam Thorsland in 29th (18:12.16).
For the girls, Kai Sutterby medaled in the Division 3 Girls race by taking 24th with a time of 22:12.
Watkins Glen hosted their only home meet of the year, Tuesday, Sept. 12. The evening was senior night for the Watkins runners in their final season. Aaron Planty and Gabe Planty paced the boys race. Sutterby was first for the girls.
Volleyball
The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team beat Spencer-Van Etten in three sets, Thursday, Sept. 14. The final scores were 25-17, 25-12, 25-15.
Megan Hazlitt had eight service points, seven kills, and three blocks, Hanley Elliott added six assists, three kills and one ace. Emmie Bond posted four service points, five kills, and three aces.
Watkins beat Newfield in five sets, Wednesday, Sept 13. The final scores were 25-14, 20-25, 20-25, 25-6, and 25-13.
Katie Losey, Bond and Jazmin Shea all had 10 serving points. Elliott added six serving points, nine reception points, three attacks, and two blocks. Hazlitt posted six serving points, nine reception points, and eight attacks.
Girls soccer
The Watkins Glen girls varsity soccer team lost to Spencer-Van Etten/Candor in the consolation round of the GLM Memorial Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 16. The final score was 5-2.
Goalie Cierra Barber posted 25 saves for the Senecas. Hannah Morse scored two goals, with one assist by Isobel Scheffey.
The Senecas fell to I.H. Watertown, 6-0, in the first round of GLM Tournament, Friday, Sept. 15. In the goal, Barber had 34 saves.
Watkins lost to Newark Valley, Wednesday, Sept. 13. The final score was 3-2.
Morse scored both goals. Scheffey and Makenna Fraboni each assisted.
Senecas' girls soccer team was blanked by Lansing, Monday, Sept. 11. The final score was 5-0.
In goal, Barber had 16 saves.
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen boys varsity soccer team lost to Odessa-Montour in the GLM Memorial Tournament consolation round, 5-1, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Dylan Morse scored, assisted by Jake Johnson. Simon Wigmore earned 18 saves in the goal. The Senecas had three corner kicks.
Watkins' boys were beat by Greene in the Friday, Sept. 15, game of the GLM Tournament. The final score was 8-0.
The Watkins boys soccer team fell to Newark Valley, 3-2, Thursday, Sept. 14.
Johnson and Tristan Yuhasz scored. Josh Updyke assisted twice. Nathaniel Wickham and Wigmore both had 12 saves in goal.
Girls swimming
The Watkins Glen girls varsity swimmers topped Odessa-Montour, 58-31, Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Jillian Cantieni took first in the 200 freestyle (2:18.79). Madeleine Kilcoyne finished first in the 50 freestyle (29.65). Amanda Wilbur placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:09.29), while Elizabeth Kilcoyne was first in the 100 freestyle (1:02.93). Peighton Cervoni finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:09.14). Isabella Fazzary took first in the 500 freestyle (6:21.58).

Odessa celebrates homecoming at football game
ODESSA--Odessa-Montour celebrated homecoming, Friday, Sept. 15, at the Seneca Indians football game. Jeremiah Lynch and Nakiaha Robinson were named the homecoming king and queen at halftime on Charles Martin Field.
The football team lost a tough game to Oneonta, 40-14. Zach Elliott scored early for the Seneca Indians, however the second touchdown was not recorded until the fourth quarter, with less than two minutes remaining. Dayne Hughey scored on a passing play.
"We knew going into tonight's game, that the Yellow Jackets would utilize their spread offense to find the openings in a defense, and they found ours very effectively," said Coach Trevor Holland. "Their style of offense relies on speed and quickness to exploit the gaps, and they were very successful."
Joe Chedzoy earned 238 of the Seneca Indians total 391 yards. Elliott posted 85 yards, while Derrick Lewis added 53. Defensively, Chedzoy also led with 15 tackles. Elliott had six tackles and Sean Kelly added five.

Girls soccer tops Newfield, boys beat Watkins Glen
NEWFIELD--The Odessa-Montour girls varsity soccer team beat Newfield, 7-1, Friday, Sept. 15.
Odessa had 20 shots on goal. Lilli Betts and Alexis Saunders led with two goals each. Kennedey Heichel also scored and had an assist. Eighth grader Camille Sgrecci got her first varsity goal, as well as assisting Betts. Gabby Fazzary also scored a goal.
The girls soccer team team fell to Candor, 5-0, Wednesday, Sept. 13.
The Indians fell to Southern Cayuga, Monday, Sept. 11. The final score was 1-0. Coach Marc Kimmerly described the game saying, "We had a few scoring opportunities but we just couldn't put one past the keeper. We played with intensity and drive but had difficulty scoring."
Boys soccer
The Indians boys varsity soccer team beat Watkins Glen in the consolation round of the annual GLM Memorial Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 16. The final score was 5-1.
Curtis Harris scored three goals for Odessa. Alec Betts and Brett Walters each scored once.
The Odessa boys fell to Dryden, 3-2, in the first round of the GLM Tournament, Friday, Sept. 15.
Harris and Deshawn Johnson both scored for Odessa.
Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team fell to Dryden, 94-62, Thursday, Sept. 14.
Kara Reese took first in the 200 freestyle (2:34.91). Megan Adams placed first in the 500 freestyle (7:07.51) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:26.77). Tori Reese was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.37) and second in the 200 IM (2:36.18).
Lydia Lynch finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:28.16) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:26.77). The 400 freestyle relay team also took first with 4:58.13.
The Indians fell to Watkins Glen, 58-31, Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Reese took first in the 200 IM (2:33.77) and first in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.85). Adams finished second in the 500 freestyle (7:05.57). Hailey Hoose placed second in the 50 freestyle (31.19). Taryn Hoyt was second in the 100 breaststroke (2:06.37). The 400 freestyle relay team finished first in 5:06.50.
Volleyball
The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team lost to Tioga in three sets, Thursday, Sept. 15. The final scores were 25-8, 25-10, 25-15.
Cheyenne Barrett had three services points, two aces, and one dig. Izzy Foote posted two service points, five digs, and two aces. Taylor Alton earned one service point and five digs, while Hannah Rose, Jacy Knapp, and Bronwyn Stermer each had one service point and four digs.

Penn Yan improves to 3-0 with win over Newark
PENN YAN--The state ranked Penn Yan Mustangs moved their season record to 3-0 with another win, Saturday, Sept. 16. Penn Yan beat Newark 36-16.
"Our players continue to work through adversity with the latest example being their overcoming of a 9-6 halftime deficit," said Coach Paul Giovine.
An explosive second half propelled the Mustangs to victory. Dylan Stape amassed 193 yards with 16 carries to score three touchdowns in the game. He also earned 34 yards with two receptions. Desmond Battin and Conner Fingar also scored for the Mustangs. Battin posted 93 yards over nine carries and scored three two-point conversions, while Fingar added 73 yards on five carries. Kyle Ingerick carried twice for another 15 yards.
Defensively, Fingar led with 11 tackles and three sacks. Ingerick added seven tackles, while Jack Peterson had six tackles and a sack.
Boys soccer
The Penn Yan boys varsity soccer team was beat by Livonia, 5-0, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Penn Yan was topped by Palmyra-Macedon, Tuesday, Sept. 12. The final score was 5-0.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team blanked Bloomfield, 5-0, Friday, Sept. 15.
Shelby Woodard beat Jill Cobb, 6-0, 6-1. Lexi Marble defeated Erica Coffey, 6-2, 6-3. Grace Worth won by forfeit.
Jenna Curbeau and Claire Pullen defeated Carlie Layton and Maddison Steele, 6-1, 6-0. Abby Heselton and Sam Denson won over Madison Connell and Lauryn Scott, 6-2, 6-1.
Penn Yan beat Newark, 5-0, Wednesday, Sept. 13.
Curbeau beat Andrea Hoe, 6-2, 6-3. Woodard defeated Cordelia Lalone, 6-0, 6-0. Molly Pullen won against Anabel Darling, 6-0, 6-0.
Claire Pullen and Marble topped Lauren Mays and Anna Bouwens, 6-0, 6-1. Denson and Worth beat Rebecca Atwell and Jazmine Guzman, 6-0, 6-0.
The Mustangs tennis team beat Marcus Whitman, 3-2, Monday, Sept. 11.
Woodard topped Alaina Dhondt, 6-1, 6-2. Molly Pullen defeated Caty Goodman, 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, Claire Pullen and Denson beat Brandi Johnson and Kayleigh Hight, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Golf
The Penn Yan varsity golf team lost to Newark, 274-279, Thursday, Sept. 14.
Peter Nicholson was the game's overall medalist with a score of 47. Coach Dan Doyle said two of the team's top four players were unable to compete.
Volleyball
The Mustangs' varsity volleyball team was beat by Wayne, 26-24, 25-12, 25-21, Thursday, Sept. 14.
Emily Wunder posted 10 kills, four aces and 16 digs. Sydney Bloom added seven kills and 10 digs.
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team defeated Bloomfield, 25-14, 25-17, 25-15, Tuesday, Sept. 12. Wunder earned nine aces, 11 kills and six assists. Bloom had six kills and 10 assists.
The Penn Yan volleyball team beat Campbell Savona, 25-20, 25-10, 25-10, Monday, Sept. 11.
Wunder had six aces, seven kills, 11 assists, and two blocks. Bloom posted 11 kills and five assists. Jossie Decker added four aces, while Hannah Yonts had four kills.
Girls soccer
The Lady Mustangs varsity soccer team lost to Honeoye, 2-0, Friday, Sept. 15. In goal, Melanie Gleason had 20 saves.
Penn Yan fell to Newark, Wednesday, Sept. 13. The final score was 3-0.
The Penn Yan soccer team was beat by Wayne, 5-1, Monday, Sept. 11.
Joddie Decker scored for Penn Yan. In goal, Gleason earned 14 saves.
Cross country
The Penn Yan boys varsity cross country team finished 14th in the Division 3 Boys Pre State race held at Wayne, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Ben DeMoras placed 28th (18:11.26). Ayden Moyre took 75th (19:44.22), while Peyton Silliman was 87th (20:11.22). Connor Moore placed 95th (20:28.73). Garrett Golden took 130th (22:08.85).
For the girls, Maci Nicholson led in 21st place (21:55.46). Jaine Doyle took 45th (23:28.25), while Gracie Murphy was 62nd (24:22.91). Allyssa Johnson finished 134th (32:14.87).

Dundee football falls to Tri-Town; girls tie Lakers
DUNDEE--The Dundee Scotsmen football team lost to the Tri-Town Titans, the combined team from South Seneca, Trumansburg and Romulus, Saturday, Sept. 16. The final score was 30-24.
Kyle Cratsley connected on seven of 20 passes, picking up 83 yards and two touchdowns. Joshua Cramer earned a touchdown on a 60 yard return, while Sam Richards also scored a touchdown with four receptions for 35 yards. Ryan Prior had 49 yards on 11 carries. Cordell Smith added 50 yards on two returns.
Defensively, Harry Nice led with seven tackles and a sack. Prior, Richards, and Preston Cole each earned six tackles.
Volleyball
The Dundee varsity volleyball team fell to Mynderse in four sets, Thursday, Sept. 14. The final scores were 25-10, 25-12, 19-25, 25-19.
Girls soccer
The Dundee girls varsity soccer team tied Hammondsport, Friday, Sept. 15. The final score was 0-0. In goal, Karynna Rutledge posted 13 saves.
The Lady Scots were blanked by Naples, Wednesday, Sept. 13. The final score was was 6-0. Rutledge had 16 saves in goal.
Boys soccer
The Dundee boys varsity soccer team lost to South Seneca-Romulus, Thursday, Sept. 14. The final score was 9-4. The Scots attempted 25 shots on goal, with four corner kicks and 15 saves.
The Scots were blanked by Naples, Tuesday, Sept. 12. The final score was 9-0.

Hammondsport volleyball wins
HAMMONDSPORT--Hammondsport's varsity volleyball team beat Arkport, 25-23, 25-13, 25-17, Wednesday, Sept. 13.
Robin Jenkins led with 11 aces. Julia Bennett posted 11 kills. Brianna Pratt added 13 setter assists.
The Hammondsport volleyball team defeated Bath, 25-19, 25-17, 25-20, Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Shelby Sherman and Elissa Martinez each posted three aces. At the net Bennett had seven kills and three blocks.
The Lakers beat Addison in four sets, Monday, Sept. 11.
Jenkins and Sherman had eight and five aces respectively. Bennett earned six kills, followed by Pratt and Sherman with five. Pratt also earned 17 setter assists.
Cross country
The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country team placed 18th overall in the Wayne Eagle Cross Country Invitational for Division 4, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Thomas Kressly led in 16th place (18:13.20). Tyler Hill was 74th (20:17.65). Mike Beam placed 89th (20:37.42). Eli Hill was 148th (23:30.99), while Andrew Hill took 173rd (27:52.07).
The girls competed, but did not place as a team. Morgan Sherman took 51st (25:47.51). Rebecca Randall finished 101st (30:55.53), while Emma Thompson was 105th (31:30.84). Paige MacDonald was 112th (32:04.76).
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team lost to Prattsburgh, 3-1, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Jackson Cummings scored for the Lakers in the second half. Dylon McGinn assisted.
The Lakers fell to Arkport/Canaseraga, 1-0, Wednesday, Sept. 13. Hammondsport posted 16 shots on goal and 15 saves.
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport girls varsity soccer team tied Dundee 0-0, Friday, Sept. 15.
Goalie Megan Allen posted nine saves for the Lakers. With the tie, Hammondsport's record is now 1-6-1.
The girls soccer team lost to Jasper-Troupsburg, 6-0, Wednesday, Sept. 13. In goal, Allen had 29 saves.
The Lakers were blanked by Scio, Monday, Sept. 11. The final score was 3-0. Allen blocked six shots..
