SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10/25/17

Penn Yan falls in sectional opener; volleyball wins
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team fell to Caledonia-Mumford/Byron Bergen in the first round of the Section V Class C sectionals, Saturday, Oct. 21. The final score was 27-18.
The Mustangs were the third seed in the class, while Cal-Mum/BB was seeded sixth.
Dylan Stape posted five receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 55 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Will Rogers threw two touchdowns and 271 yards. Desmond Battin had 12 receptions for 169 yards.
Conner Fingar led in tackles with 17, plus a sack and a fumble recovery. Stape posted 14 tackles with a sack, while Jack Peterson had 11 tackles and one sack.
Volleyball
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team topped Newark in three sets, Thursday, Oct. 19. The final scores were 25-10, 25-22, 25-20.
Emily Wunder led with 18 kills, six assists, six blocks, five aces and nine digs. Sydney Bloom had six kills, 12 assists, eight digs and three aces. Elissa Callaway posted two aces, three assists, and one block.
The Mustangs' record is 14-3 overall.
Penn Yan beat Waterloo, 25-9, 25-9, 25-17, Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Emily Wunder had 13 kills, nine assists, two blocks, five aces and 14 digs. Bloom added eight kills, nine assists and 13 digs. Caitlin Wunder posted five kills and one block.
The girls posted a win against Midlakes in three sets, Tuesday, Oct. 17. The final scores were 25-14, 25-22, 25-19.
Emily Wunder led with 14 kills, nine assists, two blocks and six aces. Bloom had three kills and nine assists. Caitlin Wunder contributed four kills and one block. Jessica Rossi earned three aces and 11 digs.
Tennis
The Penn Yan doubles team of Claire Pullen and Molly Pullen competed at the state qualifying tennis tournament after winning the Section V Class B title earlier in the week. The sisters faced Aliya Guzman and Caroline Schmitz of Fairport and lost in round two of the qualifier. The final score was 6-0, 6-0. Penn Yan had a bye in round one.
In the sectional competition, Claire and Molly first beat Victoria Greenfield and Miranda Lavalette of Waterloo. They then faced Harley-Allendale Columbia's Tessa Charles and Ella Hocker and won 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. The semifinals brought Mariah Carson and Gillian Smith of Greece Odyssey, with the Lady Mustangs winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Penn Yan's first tennis sectional title was captured with a win over HAC's Lila Campbell and Fiona Lutz 6-3, 6-2.
Cross country
The Penn Yan girls and boys varsity cross country teams competed at the Marion Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 21.
For the girls, Maci Nicholson took sixth overall (21:28), followed by Jaina Doyle in 10th (22:00). Gracie Murphy took 12th (22:07). Mary Ingram placed 42nd (27:00). Allyssa Johnson finished 52nd (30:05) and Anna Fleet was 59th (31:49).
Ben DeMoras led the boys in 12th (18:13). Ayden Mowry placed 28th (19:11). Peyton Silliman was 31st (19:24), while Connor Moore was 34th (19:34). Garrett Golden took 50th (20:45). Daniel Jiang finished 59th (21:53).
Boys soccer
The Penn Yan boys varsity soccer team fell to World of Inquiry in the Section V Class B2 quarterfinals, Saturday, Oct. 21. The final score was 7-0. The Mustangs were seeded seventh and World of Inquiry was second in the class.
Girls soccer
Penn Yan's girls varsity soccer team was beat by Aquinas in the first round of Section V Class B1 championships, Tuesday, Oct. 17. The final score was 4-0.

Dundee volleyball splits two matches; football wins
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity volleyball team suffered a loss to Harley-Allendale Columbia in four sets, Thursday, Oct. 19. The final scores were 25-13, 21-25, 25-17, 25-6.
Elizabeth Medina had five digs, two kills and two aces. Sarah Boudinot earned five digs, one kill, and one ace. Erika Gould added two digs, one kill, two blocks and one ace.
The volleyball team topped Honeoye, 25-15, 25-13, 25-8, Tuesday, Oct. 17.
Megan Sutherland had one dig, two kills, five assists and two aces. Boudinot contributed one block and five aces. Dalain Nolan had one dig, three kills, one assist and five aces.
Football
The Dundee varsity football team swept Nichols, 59-0, Saturday, Oct. 21.
Cordell Smith posted 79 yards on eight carries, with two touchdowns. Ryan Prior, Tanor Morrison, Billy Bowers and Sam Richards also each scored rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Kyle Cratsley threw for one touchdown. Preston Cratsley posted a touchdown with a reception.
Defensively, Cole had four tackles, while Bowers had three. Preston Cratsley and Cole both earned a punt block, while Joshua Cramer had one interception. Prior also forced a fumble on defense.
Girls soccer
The Dundee girls varsity soccer team fell to Finney in the first round of Class D1 sectionals, Wednesday, Oct. 18. The final score was 6-0.
In goal, Karynna Rutledge made 14 saves.
Boys soccer
The Scots' boys varsity soccer team fell to Mount Morris in the first round of Class D1 Sectionals, Tuesday, Oct. 17. The final score was 12-2.
Dundee stats were not reported.

Lakers host cross country meet
HAMMONDSPORT--The Hammondsport varsity cross country team hosted the Addison and Jasper-Troupsburg boys and girls cross country teams, Tuesday, Oct. 17.
For team scores, the Addison boys beat Hammondsport 17- 44, and Hammondsport beat Jasper, 15-55. The Addison girls swept Hammondsport, 15-55.
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport girls varsity soccer team lost to Jasper-Troupsburg, 7-0, in the first round of the Section V Class D2 championships, Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team was beat by Lima Christian, 2-1, in the first round of the Class D2 Sectionals, Tuesday, Oct. 17. The final score was 2-1.
Hammondsport had 10 shots on goal and two corner kicks, with 11 saves in goal. However, the player who scored the goal for the Lakers was not reported. Hammondsport was seeded 13th.

Odessa-Montour falls in second sectional game
ITHACA--The Odessa-Montour boys varsity soccer team fell to Lansing in the Section IV Class C championship, Saturday, Oct. 21. The final score was 7-0.
The Indians topped Spencer-Van Etten/Candor, 8-0, in the first round of sectionals, Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Taylor Grover led with three goals. Curtis Harris, Johnny Niedermaier, Deshawn Johnson, Brett Walters, Phoenix Parmenter each scored once.
Volleyball
The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team fell to Newark Valley, 25-16, 25-17, 25-11, Friday, Oct. 20.
Taylor Alton posted four aces, three digs and nine service points. Izzy Foote added three aces, three assists, two kills, four digs and four service points. Cheyenne Barrett had one kill, two digs and four service points. Rhys Stermer contributed one ace, three kills, two digs and two service points.
The Indians lost to Watkins Glen, 25-15, 25-10, 25-9, Wednesday, Oct. 18. Additional O-M stats were not provided.
Odessa lost to Thomas A. Edison, 23-25, 25-8, 27-25, 25-15 Monday, Oct. 16.
Stermer had two aces, one kill, nine digs and eight service points. Pixie Kinner added one ace, one dig and seven service points. Foote posted two aces, one assist, one kill, three digs and six service points.
Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team lost to Waverly, 54-34, Thursday, Oct. 19.
Kara Reese took first in the 100 backstroke (1:21.05). Tori Reese placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.32) and second in the 200 IM (2:32.60).
Hailey Hoose was second in the 100 freestyle (1:04.93). Emilee Chaffinch took second in the 100 backstroke (1:28.40), while Taryn Hoyt finished second in the 100 breaststroke (2:04.03).
The Indians topped Whitney Point, 55-39, Tuesday, Oct. 17.
Kara Reese took first in the 200 IM (2:48.76) and first in the 100 backstroke (1:18.71). Hoose was first in the 200 freestyle (2:26.99) and first in the 100 freestyle (1:07.59). Tori Reese finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.50).

Watkins Glen loses to Edison ahead of sectionals
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team lost to Thomas A. Edison in five games, Friday, Oct. 20. No further information or stats were provided.
The volleyball team topped Odessa-Montour, 25-15, 25-10, 25-9, Wednesday, Oct. 18.
Hanley Elliott had three aces, 19 assists, two kills and four service points. Megan Hazlitt added 13 aces, eight kills and 15 service points. Jazmin Shea posted seven aces, two kills and seven service points.
Emmie Bond contributed two aces, one assist, five kills, and two service points. Amber Benjamin had two assists, two kills and two service points. Kelsey Kernan earned three aces, one kill, and three service points.
The Senecas fell to Candor in four sets, Monday, Oct. 16. The final scores were 25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20.
Elliott had one ace, six assists, three kills, two blocks, one dig and six service points. Hazlitt posted five aces, one assist, two kills, four blocks, one dig and eight service points. Bond earned three aces, one assist, three kills, and one dig.
Katie Losey had four kills, one block, three digs and seven service points, while Shea added one ace, two assists and one kill.
Girls soccer
The Watkins Glen girls varsity soccer team lost to Unadilla Valley in the second round of the Class C sectionals, Friday, Oct. 20. The final score was 5-1.
Isobel Scheffey scored for the Senecas. Coach Scott Morse said, "We had opportunities in the game but mostly struggled to match the energy and hustle that the talented Unadilla Valley team played with. It wasn't our day but I am incredibly proud of the hard work, commitment and dedication the girls brought to this season."
Watkins beat Bainbridge-Guilford, 5-2, in the first sectional game, Tuesday, Oct. 17.
Hannah Morse and Isobel Scheffey both scored twice and had one assist. Julia Reilly added a goal. Cierra Barber posted 15 saves.
Cross country
The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team placed third at the Marathon Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 21.
Gabe Planty led the Senecas in fifth place (16:57.8). Max Evans took 24th (17:42.9). Aaron Planty finished in 31st (17:54.1), followed by Sam Thorsland in 32nd (17:56.0) and Sean Holland in 34th (18:01.9). Conlin Wysocki was 72nd (19:28.5).
For the girls, Kai Sutterby finished fourth (21:14.2). Makenzie Kellogg was 12th (22:28.9).
Girls swimming
The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team defeated Elmira Notre Dame, 95-59, Thursday, Oct. 19.
Liza Carnes took first in the 200 IM (2:43.66) and first in the 100 backstroke (1:13.25). Peighton Cervoni was first in the 50 freestyle (26.89). Lexi Castellaneta took first in diving.
Amanda Wilbur placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:07.63). Elizabeth Kilcoyne finished first in the 100 freestyle (1:00.39). Jillian Kilcoyne was second in the 200 freestyle (2:21.63).
Allison Gibson was second in the 50 freestyle (27.04) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:01.11)
Gabi Decker took second in the 200 IM (2:51.29), while Jena Slater finished second in diving (189.40). Madeleine Kilcoyne was second in the 100 butterfly (1:14.33). Jillian Cantieni placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:57.25).
Seneca Indians Football
The Seneca Indians fell to Dryden, 34-14, in an away game, Friday, Oct. 20.
"Many of our 19 player roster saw playing time for the entire game," said Coach Trevor Holland. This was due to several players having injuries.
The combined Watkins-Odessa team earned 332 total offensive yards. Zach Elliott had 147 yards, with one touchdown run and a two-point conversion scored. Casen Weeden rushed 59 yards, with one touchdown. Noah Angle posted 41 yards, while Joe Chedzoy had 26 yards. Derrick Lewis passed for 53 total yards.
