SPORTS RECAP: Week of 11/1/17

Mustangs volleyball beats Newark, College Prep
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team advances to the Section V Class B semifinals after beating Newark in three sets in the quarterfinals, Saturday, Oct. 28. The final scores were 25-16, 25-18, 26-16.
Emily Wunder led with 17 kills, 10 assists, seven digs, six aces, two solo blocks and one block assist. Sydney Bloom had 15 assists, six aces, six digs and one block. Caitlin Wunder posted eight kills and one block assist. Hannah Keech added 10 digs.
Penn Yan, the third seed, competes against number seven Aquinas in the semifinals Thursday, Nov. 2 at Newark.
Penn Yan beat North East College Prep, 25-13, 25-5, 25-10, in the first round of sectionals, Thursday, Oct. 26.
Emily Wunder had eight kills, nine assists, four blocks, one ace and two digs. Bloom contributed three kills, nine assists, four digs, and nine aces. Caitlin Wunder added six kills. Peyton Comfort earned three aces and three kills.
Cross country
The Penn Yan boys varsity cross country team placed 10th and the girls 11th in the Wayne-Finger Lakes League Championships, Saturday, Oct. 28.
Ben DeMoras took 10th overall (17:36). Ayden Mowry was 24th (18:25), while Peyton Silliman finished 62nd (19:32). Garrett Golden placed 90th (20:38). Daniel Jiang was 103rd (21:18). Mason Bishop took 119th (22:43) and Jon Gulick 128th (29:52).
For the girls, Gracie Murphy led in ninth (21:21). Jaina Doyle was 11th (21:28). Mary Ingram placed 86th (27:14), while Allyssa Johnson was 101st (30:49). Emma Harling finished 105th (38:30), while Teresa Pietrusinski followed in 106th (38:47).

Hammondsport advances to sectional semifinal
PRATTSBURGH--The number one seeded Hammondsport varsity volleyball team topped Houghton Academy in the Section V Class D2 quarterfinals, Friday, Oct. 27. The final score was 25-18, 25-19, 25-19.
Houghton was the Class D2's eighth seed. At the service line Erika Hilligus and Shelby Sherman each had four aces. At the net, Julia Bennett and Sherman earned 11 and 10 kills respectively. Brianna Pratt put up 25 setter assists.
The Lakers advance to the sectional semifinals, Wednesday, Nov. 1, and are scheduled to play the number four seed, Charles G. Finney.

Watkins and Odessa compete at IAC championship
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team took third, and Odessa-Montour seventh, in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championships, Saturday, Oct. 28 at Watkins Glen.
However, Lexi Castellaneta was first in diving and Jena Slater third, helping to capture a team diving title for Watkins.
Amanda Wilbur took third in the 200 IM (2:30.53) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.69). Jillian Cantieni was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:14.80). Peighton Cervoni finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (59.43). Elizabeth Kilcoyne placed fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:17.26).
The 200 yard medley relay team (Cervoni, Swinnerton, Wilbur and Allison Gibson) finished second in 2:02.62. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Cervoni, Kilcoyne, Cantieni and Gibson) was fourth in 1:50.50. The 400 yard freestyle relay team (Liza Carnes, Kilcoyne, Cantieni, and Wilbur) took fourth with 4:11.49.
For Odessa, Tori Reese was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.23) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:08.63). Kara Reese was eighth in the 200 IM (2:44.54). Hailey Hoose took eighth in the 100 freestyle (1:04.23) and ninth in the 200 freestyle (2:23.01).
The 200 yard medley relay team (Kara Reese, Tori Reese, Lydia Lynch, and Hoose) finished seventh with 2:16.70. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Kara Reese, Lynch, Hoose, and Tori Reese) placed seventh in 1:59.52. The 400 yard freestyle relay team (Emilee Chaffinch, Taylor Cain, Julia Paulisczak, and Megan Adams) was seventh with 5:04.71.

Watkins Glen boys win cross country championship
MARATHON--The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team claimed the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) championship title, Saturday, Oct. 28.
Overall, Gabe Planty took second (17:13.4). Aaron Planty was fourth (17:44.5), followed by Sean Holland in seventh (17:48.7).
Max Evans was eight (18:09.4) and Sam Thorsland placed ninth (18:09.8). Conlin Wysocki took 16th (19:10.0). Clint Craven finished 23rd (19:39.3).
For the girls, Kai Sutterby led in fifth place (21:25.4). Makenzie Kellogg took 12th (22:16.1).
Football
The Seneca Indians varsity football team ended the season with a 34-6 loss to Waverly, Friday, Oct. 27.
"Giving up an opening play touchdown is never a great way to start a game, and unfortunately we did," said Coach Trevor Holland. "We got the ball back after that and put together a nice eight-play drive, moving the ball an average six yards per carry."
However, Waverly scored once more in the first quarter. The combined Watkins/Odessa team scored next with 17 seconds left in the first half on a pass from Derrick Lewis to Zach Elliott in the end zone.
The Seneca Indians led in total yardage: 251 to Waverly's 221. Elliott posted 79 yards, with the one touchdown. Joe Chedzoy posted 157 total yards, while Casen Weeden had five. Lewis added 10 yards through the air.
"Unfortunately, that concludes our 2017 season," said Holland. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players who finished out our season, committing to helping each other grow as players and as young men."
