SPORTS RECAP: Week of 11-8-17

Watkins swimmers, runners win sectional crowns
OWEGO--The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team won the Section IV Class C Championship, Saturday, Nov. 4.
Lexi Castellaneta won the diving event with 488.25 points. Amanda Wilbur took first in the 200 IM (2:26.45). Peighton Cervoni finished third in the 50 freestyle (26.11). Jillian Cantieni placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:47.31). Liza Carnes was third in the 200 IM (2:33.82). Sarah Swinnerton took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.70).
The 200 yard medley relay team (Cervoni, Swinnerton, Wilbur and Allison Gibson) placed second with 2:00.14. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Cervoni, Elizabeth Kilcoyne, Cantieni and Gibson) took third with 1:46.92.
Cross country
The Senecas' boys varsity cross country team claimed the Section IV Class C Championship crown, Thursday, Nov. 2.
Gabe Planty led Watkins in first place overall (16:53.5). Aaron Planty followed in second (17:14.9), with Sean Holland in third (17:28.9). Max Evans placed fifth (17:47.0). Sam Thorsland took 10th (18:11.6). Conlin Wysocki finished in 16th (18:51.3), while Tanner Ryan took 18th (18:55.8). Clint Craven was 21st (19:00.3).
For the girls, Kai Sutterby took fourth place overall (21:08.9). Makenzie Kellogg finished 24th (23:56.7).
Volleyball
The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team fell to Tioga, 25-9, 25-10, 25-16, in the Section IV Class C quarterfinals, Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The Senecas topped Newark Valley, Monday, Oct. 30, in the first round of Sectionals. The final scores were 27-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-18.
Emmie Bond had 11 aces, six kills, five digs and 15 service points. Megan Hazlitt added eight kills, five digs, three aces, one assist and 13 service points. Hanley Elliott earned seven aces, two kills, 10 digs, 13 assists, and 12 service points.

Odessa swimmers place sixth
OWEGO--Odessa-Montour's girls varsity swim team placed sixth in the Section IV Class C Championship, Saturday, Nov. 4.
Tori Reese took second in the 200 IM (2:28.40) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.13). Megan Adams was 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:17.88) and 15th in the 500 freestyle (6:50.71).
Kara Reese placed 12th in the 50 freestyle (28.83). Lydia Lynch was 13th in the 100 butterfly (1:21.61). The 200 yard medley relay team (Adams, Tori Reese, Lynch, and Hailey Hoose) were fifth in 2:14.42.

Lakers lose to Charles G. Finney in five sets
BLOOMFIELD--The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team lost to Charles G. Finney in the Section V Class D2 semifinals, Wednesday, Nov. 1. The final scores were 24-26, 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16. Julia Bennett earned 17 kills and five blocks, while Shelby Sherman had 15 kills. Sherman was named to the sectional all star team. Hammondsport finished the season with a 15-5 record.

Mustangs volleyball team falls in sectional finals
WEBSTER--The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team fell to Wayne in the Section V Class B championship game, Saturday, Nov. 4. This was the Mustangs' first time making it to the finals for volleyball.
The final scores were 24-26, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 26-24. Penn Yan won the first two sets.
Emily Wunder had three aces, 28 kills, 14 assists, nine blocks and 25 digs. Sydney Bloom added one ace, 12 kills, 20 assists and 38 digs. Elissa Callaway contributed two aces, two kills, five assists, one block and 18 digs.
Penn Yan ends the season with a 17-4 record.
Penn Yan topped Aquinas in the semifinals, Thursday, Nov. 2. The final scores were 21-25, 25-16, 25-16, 26-24.
Emily Wunder posted 24 kills, 17 assists, three aces, three blocks and 21 digs. Bloom had nine kills, 19 assists, 24 digs and two aces. Caitlin Wunder added eight kills, one solo block and one block assist. Callaway had one ace, two kills, one block assist and 11 digs.
Cross country
The Penn Yan boys varsity cross country team took fourth and the girls fifth in the Section V Class C Championship, Saturday, Nov. 4.
Ben DeMoras led the boys in second overall (18:04.4). Ayden Mowry took 20th (19:34.9), while Connor Moore was 25th (19:46.5). Peyton Silliman finished 36th (20:05.4). Garrett Golden took 58th (21:18.1). Daniel Jiang placed 82nd (23:13.9), followed by Mason Bishop in 83rd (23:17.7).
For the girls, Maci Nicholson was 11th (22:31.9). Gracie Murphy took 13th (22:32.7). Jaina Doyle followed in 14th (22:34.4). Mary Ingram placed in 66th (28:13.1), while Allyssa Johnson was 74th (29:23.7) and Anna Fleet was 77th (30:06.2).
