Basketball loses to Waverly; Bowlers claim title WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team lost to Waverly, 60-53, Friday, Feb. 2. Dayne Hughey scored 13 points, followed by Dylan Markley with 11. Owen Scholtisek had 10 points. Alex Schimizzi posted eight. The Watkins boys defeated Thomas A. Edison, Wednesday, Jan. 31. The final score was 47-43. Hughey led with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Schimizzi posted eight points and seven rebounds. Markley and Joe Chedzoy both earned six points each, while Michael Doane had two. The Senecas lost to Waverly, 50-37, Monday, Jan. 29. Scholtisek had nine points. Markley and Chedzoy each scored eight. Girls basketball The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team lost to Waverly, Saturday, Feb. 3. The final score was 65-49. Danielle Leszyk led with 15 points and three rebounds. Taylor Kelly had nine points, two steals, and two blocks. Hannah Morse added eight points, eight assists, and two steals. Clara Chedzoy earned five points, four rebounds, and two assists. Ryanna LaMoreaux posted four points and five rebounds, while Makenna Fraboni and Emmie Bond each had three points. Julia Reilly scored two points. The Senecas topped Thomas A. Edison, 51-30, Tuesday, Jan. 30. Kelly led with 23 points, including a pair of three-point shots and three rebounds. Kathleen Clifford had seven points and four rebounds. Morse, Bond, and Jena Slater each scored four points. LaMoreaux added three points, two rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Bowling The Watkins Glen boys varsity bowling team claimed the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship, Saturday, Feb. 3. Wrett Brower bowled a 702, taking first individually. Steven Bradley was second with a combined 668. H. Nathaniel Rose had a 633, while Conlin Wysocki added a 566. Wyatt Brower recorded a 549 and Casen Weeden a 541. The girls placed fourth. Nikole VanDyke posted a 561, finishing fourth. Hayley Cornish added a 523. Wrestling Watkins' varsity wrestling team placed 13th at the Section IV Class B Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 3. Kameryn Sheldon (220) took first in the championship round. Dalton Cummings (182) and Dawson Wade (113) both finished sixth. Indoor track The Watkins Glen varsity indoor track team competed at the Section IV Championship at Cornell University, Saturday, Feb. 3. Aaron Planty won the 1600 meter race for Division 2 (4:38.93, a personal record (PR)). Gabe Planty was second in the 3200 meters (10:07.17). Isobel Scheffey placed second in the 300 meters (46.10, a new school record) and third in the 55 meters (7:87, a new school record). Megan Hazlitt took third in the 600 meters (1:52.44, PR). The 4x200 meter relay team (Breanna Carl, Allison Gibson, Hazlitt, and Scheffey) were fourth with 2:04.59, a new school record. Gibson was ninth in the long jump (13'3") and 10th in the 55 meters (8.12). Carl took 10th in the 1000 meters (3:55.86, PR).
Grover scores 26 en route to Odessa-Montour victory ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team beat Spencer-Van Etten, 60-53, Wednesday, Jan. 31. Olivia Grover posted 26 points and 15 rebounds. Nakiaha Robinson followed with 18 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Robinson was also 8-for-8 from the foul line, including 6-for-6 in the final minute to secure the win. Gillian Clark scored 10 points. Grace Vondracek and Alexis Saunders each had three points. With the win, Odessa's record is 14-3 and they captured the division title. Wrestling The Indians' wrestling team took sixth at the Section IV Class B Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 3. Dylan Houseknecht (285) placed second for Odessa. Andrew Hartford (126), Jeremiah Lynch (160), and Daniel Minnier (170) took third. Collin Haag (138) and Jacob Zimmer (152) each took fifth. The Indians topped Lansing, 45-6, Wednesday, Jan. 31. Haag (145) pinned Garrett Hoskie in 3:21. Lynch (160) beat Garrett Downing in 3:17. Houseknecht (285) won, 1-0, over Nick Bashta.Thomas Rumpff (113), Josiah Lynch (120), Hartford (126), Zimmer (152), and Minnier (170) won by forfeit. Boys basketball The Odessa-Montour boys varsity basketball team lost to Newfield, 71-53, Friday, Feb. 2. Curtis Harris scored 12 points, while Noah Austin and Zach Elliott each had 10. Brandon Ray posted nine points. Paden Grover added four points, followed by Derrick Lewis and Noah Angle with three points each. The Indians fell to Spencer, 61-52, Tuesday, Jan. 30. Harris led with 24 points. Elliott posted 13 points. Austin had seven, followed by Lewis with three and Grover with two. Boys swimming The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team topped Lansing, 106-54, Thursday, Feb. 1. The 200 medley relay team (Brett Walters, Billy Tague, Jake Mayette, and Bailey Hornbrook) took first in 1:57.52. The 200 free relay team (Tague, Walters, Mayette, and Cameron Adams) placed first in 1:42.58. The 400 free relay team (Adams, Micah Brewster, Justin Andrews, and Liam Mayette) was first with 4:27.40. Tague took first in the 200 IM (2:09.96) and the 100 fly (59.16). Adams was first in the 500 free (5:55.97) and 200 free (2:08.93). Walters finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.50). Odessa fell to Southern Cayuga, Tuesday, Jan. 30. The final score was 50-44. The 200 medley relay team (Alec Betts, Tague, Mayette, and Walters) took first in 1:54.47. Tague was first in the 200 IM (2:07.69, a personal record) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.87). Betts placed first in the 500 free (5:52.11), while Walters finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:08.50). Bowling The Odessa-Montour girls varsity bowling team took sixth and the boys eighth at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Tournament, Saturday, Feb. 3. Jackie Vincent finished 12th with a 524 combined series. Pixie Kinner was 19th with a 497. For the boys, Andrew Ink placed 14th with a 606. Eric Rumsey was 20th with a 564. The Indians' bowling teams both lost to Union Springs/Port Byron, Thursday, Feb. 1. Rumsey posted a 597 for the boys. Jeremiah Lederman added 440, while Ink had a 412. Jesse Jordan and Colton Chapman both bowled a 331. Vincent led the girls with a 435. Jana Arias followed with a 414. Ashley Stewart posted a 368, while Madison Randall added a 352. Kinner earned a 332.
Dundee loses one, tops Red Jacket in final seconds BRADFORD--The Dundee boys varsity basketball team lost to Bradford, Thursday, Feb. 1. The final score was 41-25. Kyle Cratsley led Dundee with 13 points. The Scots topped Red Jacket, 53-49, in a thrilling game Wednesday, Jan. 31. Cratsley sunk two free throws with four seconds left on the clock to give the Scotsmen the lead. He then recorded two more to give Dundee the four point advantage as the buzzer sounded. Wylie Hall led with 24 points. Girls basketball Dundee's girls varsity basketball team fell to Harley Allendale Columbia, 58-42, Saturday, Feb. 3. Mackenzie Strait scored 15 points. Alyssah Newell recorded 11 rebounds. The Lady Scots lost to Red Jacket, Tuesday, Jan. 30. The final score was 61-31. Makenzie Cratsley scored 10 points, with six rebounds. Megan Sutherland and Strait both posted six points. Karynna Rutledge added four points. Wrestling The Dundee varsity wrestling team finished 14th at the Section V Class B Championship, Friday, Feb. 2, to Saturday, Feb. 3. Steven Ameigh (132) and Kenneth Empson (160) both placed fifth. Ethan Rexford (170) took sixth. Ameigh and Empson both won by decision in their final match, 6-5 and 7-5, respectively. Rexford was pinned in 2:10. Podium winners advance to the state qualifier at Brockport this weekend.
Penn Yan pulls off a win against Geneva, 47-43 PENN YAN--The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team defeated Geneva, 47-43, Friday, Feb. 2. Desmond Battin scored 13 points and was 4-for-4 at the foul line. Dylan Stape had 11 points and was 5-for-6 at the foul line. Derrick Riviello posted nine points, while Ben Emerson had six. Conner Fingar and Peyton Schuck each scored three points and Cade Curbeau had two. Penn Yan lost to Wayne, Tuesday, Jan. 30. The final score was 42-36. Stape earned 14 points. Fingar added seven points. Battin scored six points, while Emerson had four. Schuck earned three points and Riviello had two. Girls basketball The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team fell to Geneva, Friday, Feb. 2. The final score was 66-47. Individual stats were not reported. The Lady Mustangs topped Wayne, 53-46, Wednesday, Jan. 31. Sydney Bloom posted 21 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks. Peyton Comfort and Hannah Keech each scored eight points, with 10 and six rebounds respectively. Joddie Decker had six points and seven rebounds, while Ashley Sisson added five points and five rebounds. Emma Harling scored three points. Jenna Curbeau posted two. Wrestling Penn Yan's varsity wrestling team was ninth at the Section V Class BBB Championship, Friday, Feb. 2, to Saturday, Feb. 3. Coty Bailey (160) was second in the finals. Nate Elliott (152) finished third overall. Damien Snyder (126) and Jarred Calice (138) both placed fourth. Ayden Mowry (99) and Alvaro Chavez (182) each were sixth. Bowling The Mustangs' girls varsity bowling team blanked Bloomfield, Wednesday, Jan. 31. The final score was 4-0. Emily Augustine bowled a 560. Kari Ayers posted a 543, while Brandee Ellis added a 437. Rielly Stewart added a 380. The boys fell, 3-1. Zack Blauvelt led with a 616. Cameron Bassage posted with a 574. Jon Mashewske had a 550, followed by Ben Broome with a 518. Zach Gurba earned a 476. The Penn Yan girls beat Marcus Whitman, 4-0, Tuesday, Jan. 30. Ayers had a 694, followed by Augustine with a 556. Hammondsport boys top Arkport-Canaseraga HAMMONDSPORT--The Lakers' boys varsity basketball team topped Arkport-Canaseraga, 66-22, Friday, Feb. 2. Brayden Whitcomb ended the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Parker Watson scored 13 points, with eight rebounds. The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team lost to Bradford, Tuesday, Jan. 30. The final score was 65-43. Watson led with 16 points. Whitcomb earned 12 points and eight rebounds. Girls basketball The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team beat Bradford, 41-32, Wednesday, Jan. 31. McKenzie Boscoe scored 16 points, with six rebounds. Destiny Hammond added 11 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Paige MacDonald posted six points and 12 rebounds. TeĆ” Flynn earned five points and six rebounds.
