SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10-10-18

Penn Yan defeats Wayne; tennis team advances
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team delivered Wayne its first loss of the season, Saturday, Oct. 6. The final score was 49-21.
Will Rogers was 28 for 36 passing, earning 465 yards and six touchdowns. Brennan Prather caught four passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns, while Conner Fingar caught 13 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Mekhi Mahan had three receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Bryan Duran added 26 yards and a touchdown.
Rogers rushed for 25 yards, while Fingar added another six. Fingar also recorded a touchdown on defense off of an interception. He had 23 tackles.
Jack Peterson posted 10 tackles. Mahan had nine and one sack. Kyle Berna, Andrew Garren, and Riley Brittingham each had six tackles. Berna added two sacks as well.
Tennis
Penn Yan, the number one seed in Class CC, beat Mynderse in the sectional semifinals, Thursday, Oct. 4. The Mustangs now face Marcus Whitman in the Class CC finals.
The Penn Yan topped Mynderse, 5-0. Molly Pullen won against Sarah Kohberger, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. Claire Pullen beat Madison Lynch, 6-2, 6-0. Sam Denson outscored Alaina Wilkerson, 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles, Jayden Hollister and Grace Worth beat Lily Redding and Lacey Maloney, 6-2, 7-5. Sydney Moravec and Abby Garvey topped Rachel Mahoney and Jewlie Pierce, 6-0, 6-2.
The Mustangs raced past Wayland-Cohocton, 5-0, in the sectional quarterfinals, Wednesday, Oct. 3.
Molly Pullen won against Jasmine Lang, 6-0, 6-0. Claire Pullen beat Allison Micglire, 6-0, 6-0. Denson defeated Sarah Hoppough, 6-1, 6-0.
Hollister and Worth beat Kaya George and Charina Gray, 6-0, 6-0. Moravec and Garvey topped Jennifer Ford and Emily Yeoman, 6-0, 6-0.
Golf
The Mustangs' varsity golf team won against Waterloo, 223-234, Thursday, Oct. 4, to end the regular season.
Clayton Koivuniemi and Max Brodmann both led with a 43. Clark Simmons recorded a 44. Peter Nicholson had a 45. Cameron Bassage followed with a 48.
Penn Yan topped Palmyra-Macedon, Wednesday, Oct. 3. The final score was 240-263.
Simmons and Nicholson both had a 47. Brodmann posted a 48. Koivuniemi and Kevin Smith each had 49.
Girls soccer
The Penn Yan girls varsity soccer team lost to Newark in overtime, 3-2, Thursday, Oct. 4.
Sierra Harrison scored both goals for the Lady Mustangs. Hayley Andersen and Brady Logan each assisted. In the goal, Elle Harrison earned 16 saves.
Penn Yan blanked Sodus, Monday, Oct. 1. The final score was 2-0.
Leah Moniot scored twice. Hayley Andersen assisted once. Elle Harrison had three saves in goal.
Boys soccer
Penn Yan's boys varsity soccer team blanked Waterloo, Thursday, Oct. 4. The final score was 1-0.
Ralph Clancy scored once. In the goal, Mason MacKerchar had four saves.
Volleyball
The Lady Mustangs' varsity volleyball team lost to Palmyra-Macedon, 3-1, Thursday, Oct. 4.
Caitlin Wunder had 18 kills. Serina Sheradin earned 30 assists. Hannah Brodmann added nine kills and two aces.
Penn Yan was beaten by Newark, Tuesday, Oct. 2. The final scores were 14-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17.
Wunder posted 17 kills and three aces. Sheradin contributed 27 aces. Kayla Anderson added six aces.
Cross country
The Penn Yan varsity cross country teams competed at Williamson, Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Joddie Decker led the girls in first place (20:33). Grace Murphy was fourth (21:44). Maci Nicholson was sixth (21:57), while Jaina Doyle was 14th (24:22). Paige McKee finished 16th (24:46). Jenna Curbeau took 18th (25:01).
For the boys, Ayden Mowry finished in second (18:46), followed by Connor Moore in third (18:47). David Young took 12th (20:02). James Tette was 13th (20:09). Daniel Jiang finished in 26th (21:37). Jon Gulick was 35th (29:41).

Dundee falls to Mynderse; volleyball loses in four games
SENECA FALLS--Dundee's varsity football team lost to Mynderse, 22-0, on the Blue Devils' home field, Friday, Oct. 5.
Neither team scored in the first quarter, while Mynderse took a single touchdown lead by halftime. Through the end of third and fourth quarters, Mynderse carried their 22 point lead.
Joshua Cramer earned 108 yards on 18 carries for Dundee. Gabriel Kirkendall had nine carries for 42 yards, while Kenneth Empson Jr. added 25 yards.
With 12 tackles and two tackle assists, Preston Cole led the defensive effort. Cameron Denmark had five tackles and two assists. Logan Corey and Empson both posted three tackles.
Cross country
Dundee's Matthew Wood competed in the Wayne-Finger Lakes meet held at Cayuga Lake State Park against Bloomfield-Napes, Midlakes, and Mynderse, Wednesday, Oct. 3. Wood placed third (19:05) overall, out of 56 runners.
Girls soccer
The Lady Scots lost to Honeoye, Friday, Oct. 5. The final score was 8-0. Goalie Karynna Rutledge posted 22 saves.
Dundee fell to Red Jacket, 6-0, Wednesday, Oct. 3. Rutledge made 17 saves.
Volleyball
Dundee's varsity volleyball team lost to Mynderse in four sets, Tuesday, Oct. 2. The final scores were 25-20, 15-25, 25-17, 25-21.
Elizabeth Medina had two digs, four tips, and three aces. Megan Sutherland earned two digs, two tips, four assists, and three aces. Mackenzie Strait added three tips, two assists, and two aces.

Hammondsport runners compete at Midlakes
CLIFTON SPRINGS--The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country team took fourth in the Midlakes Invitational Division 3 race, Saturday, Oct. 6.
Thomas Kressly placed fifth (18:30.5). Liam Kressly followed in 21st (20:15.9). Matt Lyle took 39th (21:15.94). George Drake finished 42nd (21:23.22), while Eli Hill was 47th (21:46.31). Mike Beam placed 54th (22:04.69).
For the girls, Morgan Cheney was 45th (28:35.07). Emma Thompson placed 55th (31:55.31).
Girls soccer
Hammondsport's girls varsity soccer team fell to Prattsburgh in a home game, Monday, Oct. 1. The final score was 2-0. Goalie Megan Allen had 12 saves.
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team took a loss to Arkport, Wednesday, Oct. 3. The final score was 5-0.
Volleyball
The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team beat Addison, 25-2, 25-7, 25-9, Monday, Oct. 1.
Erika Hilligus led with 12 aces. Julia Bennett posted six aces and also had eight kills.

Watkins Glen opens new turf field, hosts soccer
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen boys varsity soccer team topped Newfield, 4-1, Friday, Oct. 5.
Peter Sandritter scored twice for Watkins. Avery Watson and Dylan Morse each had one goal. Nate Wickham posted six saves.
The Senecas fell to the Odessa-Montour Indians, Wednesday, Oct. 3. The final score was 2-1. Clint Craven scored, with an assist by Isaac McIlroy.
Watkins lost to Trumansburg, 3-1, Monday, Oct. 1. Ayden Zahradnik earned Watkins' goal on a penalty kick.
Girls soccer
The Senecas' girls varsity soccer team topped Tioga, 5-1, Thursday, Oct. 4.
"With the win tonight we secured the division title," said Coach Scott Morse. "I couldn't be more proud of the girls and how far we have come this season. Graduating nine players last year there was an expectation the team would struggle but the girls worked so hard and improved every day and we are playing really well right now."
Hannah Morse had two goals and an assist, while Taylor Kelly also scored twice. Nancy Jackson added the last goal. Abby Congdon assisted once. In the goal, Cierra Barber posted 10 saves.
With the win, Watkins' record is now 8-5.
Watkins beat Newfield in a home game, Tuesday, Oct. 2. The final score was 10-3.
Morse and Kelly each had three goals. Morse also posted two assists. Aislinn Klemann, Haley Dean, Congdon, and Barber each scored once.
Danielle Leszyk earned two assists. Barber also had two saves in goal. Natalie Edmister added a save.
The Watkins girls blanked Odessa-Montour, 3-0, Monday, Oct. 1.
Leszyk posted one goal, with assists on the other two. Kelly and Morse each scored. Barber made 15 saves.
Seneca Indians football
The combined Watkins/Odessa varsity football team lost in an away game at Tioga, Friday, Oct. 5. The final score was 42-0.
"We just couldn't seem to put anything together offensively or defensively against a very physical Tioga team," said Coach Trevor Holland. "They brought everything they had play after play. We looked like we were stuck in the mud of a rain-soaked Haggerty Field."
Joe Chedzoy led with 57 yards on 12 carries. Zach Elliott posted 30 yards on 12 carries, while Owen Scholtisek added 25 yards over four carries. Casen Weeden earned 12 yards. Derrick Lewis had two passes to net 12 yards.
Lewis led the defense with nine tackles. Wyatt Brower tackled eight players, while Wrett Brower and Gage Arcangeli followed with seven tackles each.
"With our final two games of the season at home (at Watkins Glen), our focus will be to shake off these last three losses, win each game against Moravia and Dryden, and get ourselves into the playoffs," said Holland.
Cross country
The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team placed 14th at the Brewster Bear Invitational Varsity II 5K Run, Saturday, Oct. 6.
Gabe Planty led with a fourth place finish (15:32.7). Max Evans took 31st (17:00.2), followed by Steven Gublo in 78th (18:15.4). Ben Swinnerton placed 96th (19:18.8). Lawrence Majors took 118th (20:20.6) and Elliott Holland 124th (20:43.4).
For the girls, Kai Sutterby was 16th (20:32.1), followed by Breanna Carl in 20th (20:36.2). Sierra Morris finished 70th (29:44.9). Maya Somerville was 71st (30:21.2).
Volleyball
Watkins' varsity volleyball team lost to Waverly, Tuesday, Oct. 2. The final scores were 25-17, 25-16, 25-23.
Adrienna Solomon had seven service points, three aces, three digs, one kill, and one block. Katie Losey posted five service points, two aces, three digs, and three kills. Kelsey DeMillo added five service points and four digs. Kelsey Kernan earned four service points, one ace, one dig, and two kills. Claudia Parker had three service points, three digs, and six kills. Mattie Yontz contributed three service points and four digs. Carlie Baker added one service point, one dig, one kill, and five blocks.
Girls swimming
The Watkins Glen varsity swim team topped Dryden, 89-76, Thursday, Oct. 4.
Allie Gibson was first in the 200 freestyle (2:10.92) and 50 freestyle (27.13). Jillian Cantieni took first in the 200 IM (2:45.23). Madeleine Kilcoyne placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:08.93). Peighton Cervoni was first in the 100 freestyle (59.31). Thalia Marquez finished first in the 500 freestyle (6:17.67). Amanda Wilbur took first in the 100 backstroke (1:09.81).
The Senecas defeated Southern Cayuga, Tuesday, Oct. 2. The final score was 57-37.
Wilbur won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.66, while Kilcoyne took first in the 200 IM (2:43.51). Gibson placed first in the 100 freestyle (58.84). Cervoni finished first in the 500 freestyle (5:59.58). Faye Mooney was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.10).

O-M volleyball falls in four games
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team fell to Spencer-Van Etten in four sets, 20-25, 25-11, 25-21, 29-27, Thursday, Oct. 4.
Isabel Foote had one ace, four assists, two digs, and 10 service points. Hannah Chapman added three aces, two kills, eight blocks, three digs, and eight service points. Sara Gardner posted one ace, nine digs, and six service points, while Jacy Knapp had eight digs and five service points. Rhys Stermer contributed one ace, one kill, five blocks, four digs, and four service points.
Girls soccer
The Indians girls soccer team lost to Watkins Glen on the road, Monday, Oct. 1. The final score was 3-0.
Boys soccer
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity soccer team fell to Trumansburg, Friday, Oct. 5. The final score was 4-1.

Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team lost to Lansing, Tuesday, Oct. 2. The final score was 95-68.
Kara Reese finished first in the 200 freestyle (2:24.44) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:17.33). Katie Adams was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:35.52) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:20.47). Madison Moss placed second in the 200 IM (2:50.31) and second in the 500 freestyle (6:57.17).
Delaney Paulisczak took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:38.15). Megan Adams was third in the 200 freestyle (2:34.48) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:20.50). Julia Paulisczak was third in the 50 freestyle (33.28), while Taylor Cain finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:19.44). Reagan Reese placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:40.08).
