SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10-17-18

Dundee volleyball beats Honeoye in four games
DUNDEE--Dundee's varsity volleyball team beat Honeoye in four sets, Thursday, Oct. 11. The final scores were 25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 25-13.
Megan Sutherland earned six digs, three tips, four assists, and three aces. Mackenzie Strait had two digs, six kills, an assist, and six aces. Elizabeth Medina posted five digs, one tip, and one ace.
The Scots fell to Bloomfield, Tuesday, Oct. 9, in Dundee's annual Pink Game, which raised $1,194.25 to be donated to the Hope Walk of Yates County. The Hope Walk assists Yates residents diagnosed with cancer.
Sutherland had one dig, one attack, and two assists. Dalaine Nolan contributed two digs and one ace. Strait earned one dig and one ace.
Football
The Scots' varsity football team lost to visiting Dansville, Saturday, Oct. 13. The final score was 22-6.
Dundee's touchdown was scored by Preston Cratsley, who earned 49 yards over 10 carries. Cratsley was also 2-for-8 passing for 45 yards. Joshua Cramer had 47 yards on 16 carries. Kenneth Empson Jr. added 24 yards with five carries. Gabriel Kirkendall posted nine yards. Austin Gibson had 37 yards on a reception.
Cameron Denmark tackled 11 players on the defensive side. Preston Cole added eight tackles, while Gibson and Empson each had four tackles. Cratsley posted three tackles.
Girls soccer
The Lady Scots fell to Hammondsport, Friday, Oct. 12. The final score was 2-0.
The soccer team raised over $500 for the Hope Walk of Yates County in their pink game.
Dundee's soccer team was beaten by Harley Allendale Columbia, 4-0, Thursday, Oct. 11.

Penn Yan girls tennis finishes perfect with title
PITTSFORD--The Penn Yan varsity tennis doubles team of Claire and Molly Pullen won the Section V Class CC championship, Saturday, Oct. 13, just days after Penn Yan won its first-ever tennis team sectional crown, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Claire and Molly Pullen defeated Mynderse's Sarah Kohberger and Madison Lynch in the doubles final, 6-2, 6-0. The pair also beat North Rose-Wolcott's Samanta Osorio-Ortiz and Sierra Perkins, 6-1, 6-2; and Wellsville's Carina Kling and Cassie Kling, 6-1, 6-0.
Earlier in the week, the tennis team won their first-ever sectional title in the Class CC finals against Marcus Whitman, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
The win also marks a 15-0 perfect win record for the season. The final score against Marcus Whitman was 5-0.
"They came out focused and ready to play. I think having the experience of being in the Class B finals last year helped," said Coach Nathan Kraemer. "They didn't let the pressure get to them at all. They played great tennis from start to finish in their matches."
In singles, Molly Pullen defeated Rebecca Frarey, 6-1, 6-0. The score for Claire Pullen against Alaina Dhondt was 6-0, 6-3. Sam Denson beat Caty Goodman, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.
In doubles, Jayden Hollister and Grace Worth topped Camry Semans and Jane Snaith, 6-0, 6-3. Sydney Moravec and Abby Garvey won against Kaitlyn Hopper and Jennifer Roussell, 6-1, 7-5.
"I'm so proud of the effort this team has put in both before and during the season," added Kraemer. "They've been working hard since last season ended to get where they are today. They're a really special group of girls."
Football
Penn Yan's varsity football team rolled past Midlakes, 47-14, Friday, Oct. 12.
Will Rogers was 13-for-19 passing, securing 271 yards and five touchdowns. Kyle Berna was 12-for-13, with 120 yards. Rogers and Berna each earned a touchdown on the ground as well. Rogers had 59 yards on seven carries, while Berna added 30.
Conner Finger posted three touchdowns with six receptions and 195 yards. Brennan Prather had two touchdowns, with 79 yards. Jon Droney earned 72 yards receiving, followed by Mekhi Mahan with 48 yards.
On the defensive, Mahan tackled 16 players. Fingar contributed 12 tackles, while Jon Droney had seven. Jack Peterson added six tackles.
Boys soccer
The Mustangs' boys varsity soccer team lost to Palmyra-Macedon, Friday, Oct. 12. The final score was 5-0.
Golf
The Penn Yan varsity golf team secured the third automatic qualifier from the Finger Lakes League, Thursday, Oct. 11, to compete in the sectional team tournament in the spring.
"Fall golf is unique to a handful of leagues throughout New York state," explained Coach Dan Doyle. "Most teams participate in spring golf. For this reason, all fall golf leagues hold year-end individual and team sectional qualifiers. Penn Yan, with their win, now advances to play in the sectional tournament in the spring."
The Mustangs as a team shot a 244 at the qualifier, against Wayne (251) and Honeoye (268). Clayton Koivuniemi earned a low score of 42 as the qualifier medalist. Max Brodmann had a 49. Peter Nicholson shot a 50, followed by Kevin Smith with a 51. Cameron Bassage and Clark Simmons each had a 52.
Penn Yan competed in the individual sectional qualifier held at Ontario Country Club, Tuesday, Oct. 9. The top 10 players qualify for sectionals in the spring.
Nicholson led the Mustangs, finishing in 6th place with a combined score of 88. Broadman tied for 10th, shooting a 92, and will serve as an alternate for the spring event. Coach Doyle said Koivuniemi, Smith, and Bassage finished respectively "in the middle of the pack" of 44 total players.
Volleyball
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team defeated Midlakes, Thursday, Oct. 11. The final scores were 25-11, 25-8, 25-19.
Hanna Brodmann earned nine aces and seven kills. Serina Sheradin had 21 assists and six digs. Akiya Brewer posted five aces and 10 digs. Caitlin Wunder added 12 kills.
With the win, Penn Yan's record is 8-7 overall.
Penn Yan beat Waterloo in four sets, Tuesday, Oct. 9. The final scores were 25-16, 25-7, 21-25, 25-21.
Sheradin posted with 31 assists and six aces. Wunder earned 17 kills. Brodmann added five aces and 10 kills.
Girls soccer
The Penn Yan girls varsity soccer team blanked Mynderse, 1-0, Friday, Oct. 12.
Sierra Harrison scored once on an assist from Cassie Chidsey. Goalie Elle Harrison posted five saves.
The Mustangs tied Waterloo, 2-2, in overtime, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Sierra Harrison and Hayley Andersen both scored. Logan Broome and Leah Moniot assisted. Elle Harrison had 12 saves in goal.
Cross country
The Penn Yan varsity cross country teams competed at the Cuba-Rushford Invitational 5K run, Saturday, Oct. 13.
Joddie Decker finished second (19:54.65), while Maci Nicholson was fifth (20:36.70). Gracie Murphy was ninth (20:50.16). Jaina Doyle took 18th (22:51.95). Paige McKee finished 22nd (23:26.41). Ashley Sisson placed 40th (38:01.00).
Ayden Mowry was fifth for the boys (17:58.27). Connor Moore was ninth (18:24.04). David Young took 24th (19:18.66), followed by James Tette in 25th (19:25.25). Daniel Jiang was 38th (20:34.52). Jon Gulick placed 43rd (24:03.95).

Hammondsport soccer tops Dundee, 2-0
DUNDEE--Hammondsport's girls varsity soccer team blanked Dundee, Friday, Oct. 12. The final score was 2-0.
Hannah Hoerter and Faith Bray each scored once. Aubrie Cole assisted once. In goal, Megan Allen had three saves.
The Lakers fell to Arkport/Canaseraga, 4-0, Thursday, Oct. 11. Allen had 12 saves in goal.
Hammondsport beat Scio, Tuesday, Oct. 9. The final score was 1-0. Hoerter scored with an assist from Alliyah Jensen. Allen had four saves.
Boys Soccer
The Hammondsport boys soccer team lost to Campbell-Savona, 5-2, Friday, Oct. 12.
Scoring for the Lakers were John Wells and Ben Cole. Alex Davis had an assist.
Volleyball
Hammondsport improved to 13-1 on the season defeating Fillmore in four sets, 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23, Tuesday, Oct 9.
Shelby Sherman led at the service line with nine aces and put down six kills at the net. Julia Faulkner had seven aces and Brianna Pratt recorded five aces and 24 assists. Julia Bennett had nine kills to lead the Lakers and Erica Hilligus added six.

Seneca Indians win at Watkins Glen homecoming
WATKINS GLEN--The Seneca Indians football team secured a win against Moravia, 51-6, Saturday, on the newly renovated Alumni Field, Oct. 13.
"Emotionally we played with more determination and urgency to influence the game's outcome," said Coach Trevor Holland. "It was a great homecoming environment and I want to thank everyone for their support, and to all who walked in the parade, and to the fans who lined Decatur Street, what a great day."
The Watkins and Odessa team earned a total of 560 yards. Zach Elliott rushed for 187 yards, with 19 carries and two touchdowns. Joe Chedzoy added 142 yards, on 14 carries and also had two touchdowns. Casen Weeden earned 43 yards, with nine carries and two touchdowns.
Owen Scholtisek also scored a touchdown, with six carries and 78 yards. Jared Rumsey posted 15 yards, four carries, and a touchdown. Travon Jones earned 18 yards on four carries. Through the air, Derrick Lewis had 63 yards and one touchdown on 10 attempts.
Girls soccer
The Watkins Glen girls varsity soccer team fell to Groton in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Small Schools championship game, Saturday, Oct. 13.
The final score was 6-1. Haley Dean scored for the Senecas, while Carly Arnold assisted. In the goal, Cierra Barber had 13 saves.
"We came out with focus and intensity for most of the first half, but gave up a goal with 30 seconds to go and it really energized the Groton team," said Coach Scott Morse. "Haley Dean was able to score on a high pass from Carly Arnold that made it 3-1 but Groton scored again quickly to expand the lead again. We were never able to get much going throughout the night, but fought hard."
Watkins topped Moravia, 8-2, Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Taylor Kelly led with three goals. Hannah Morse and Dean both scored twice, while Morse also had two assists. Danielle Leszyk added one goal and one assist. Barber earned 14 saves in the goal.
The Senecas beat Marathon in a home game, Tuesday, Oct. 9. The final score was 5-1.
Morse scored all five goals. Kelly added two assists. In the goal, Barber posted 23 saves.
Volleyball
The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team was beaten by Tioga, 25-22, 23-25, 25-10, 25-15, Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Katie Losey had nine service points, one ace, 10 digs, and four kills. Kelsey Kernan added five service points, two kills, and 15 assists. Claudia Parker contributed four service points, nine digs, and three kills. Carlie Baker posted three service points, three aces, six kills, and seven blocks.
Girls swimming
The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team topped Odessa-Montour, 54-39, Thursday, Oct. 11.
Amanda Wilbur took first in the 200 freestyle (2:12.74). Allie Gibson was first in the 200 IM (2:37.32). Annika Wickham placed first in the 50 freestyle (31.01). Jillian Cantieni finished first in the 100 freestyle (1:01.06). Malina Butler was first in the 100 backstroke (1:12.83). Sarah Swinnerton took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.65).
The Senecas beat Waverly, 99-79, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Cantieni was first in the 200 freestyle (2:13.20) and 500 freestyle (5:59.42). Gibson finished first in the 50 freestyle (26.64) and first in the 100 freestyle (58.59). Wilbur took first in the 200 IM (2:29.39), while Peighton Cervoni was first in the 100 backstroke (1:06.89). Sarah Swinnerton took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.88). Jena Slater placed first in diving.

Odessa-Montour girls soccer tops Union Springs
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour girls varsity soccer team beat Union Springs/Port Byron, Friday, Oct. 12. The final score was 2-1.
Kennedey Heichel recorded both goals for Odessa.
Girls Swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team claimed the Section IV Class C title, during the Elmira Invite, Friday, Oct. 12, to Saturday, Oct. 13.
The 200 yard medley relay team (Megan Adams, Tori Reese, Katie Adams, and Kara Reese) were 14th with 2:17.71. The 400 yard freestyle relay team (Emilee Chaffinch, Katie Adams, Madison Moss, and Megan Adams) placed 16th in 5:08.84. The Indians' other 200 yard medley relay team (Taylor Cain, Delaney Paulisczak, Madison Moss, and Julia Paulisczak) finished 18th in 2:32.04.
Tori Reese was ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.99) and 11th in the 100 butterfly (1:07.35). Kara Reese took 17th in the 100 backstroke (1:13.49) and 26th in the 100 freestyle (1:04.07).
Odessa fell to Watkins Glen, 54-39, Thursday, Oct. 11.
Tori Reese was first in the 100 butterfly (1:07.52) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.59). Moss won the 500 freestyle (6:28.00). Kara Reese took second in the 200 IM (2:39.11) and 100 backstroke (1:15.43). Cain took second in the 50 freestyle (33.47).
Odessa's swim team topped Elmira Notre Dame, 51-41, Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Tori Reese finished first in the 200 IM (2:35.61) and 100 breaststroke (1:17.48). Moss was first in the 500 freestyle (6:57.04). Kara Reese placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:16.46) and second in the 50 freestyle (28.82).
Megan Adams took second in the 200 freestyle (2:33.16) and second in the 100 backstroke (1:18.37). Katie Adams was second in the 100 butterfly (1:21.20)..
