SPORTS RECAP: Week of 11-7-18

Watkins Glen girls win swimming sectional
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team claimed the Section IV Class C championship, Wednesday, Oct. 31, to Saturday, Nov. 3.
In diving, Jena Slater won, followed by Julya Slater in second. Allie Gibson took first in the 50 yard freestyle (25.61) and first in the 100 yard freestyle (56.20). Jillian Cantieni was second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:08.29) and second in the 500 freestyle (5:47.83).
Peighton Cervoni was first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:02.11) and second in the 100 yard freestyle (57.53). Amanda Wilbur placed second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.03). Sarah Swinnerton took second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:11.19).
Cross country
The Watkins Glen varsity cross country team placed fifth at the Section IV Class C Championship, while Gabe Planty finished first overall, Thursday, Nov. 1. The girls placed fourth in the Class C competition.
Planty took first with a time of 16:30.1, and advances to the state championship, Saturday, Nov. 10. Max Evans also competed, placing 10th (18:31.6). Steven Gublo was 28th (19:18.9). Lawrence Majors took 39th (19:43.2), followed by Benjamin Swinnerton in 40th (19:46.5). Elliott Holland was 61st (21:18.2).
For the girls, Breanna Carl placed 10th (21:22.5), while Kai Sutterby was 11th (21:47.8). Makenzie Kellogg took 15th (22:21.1). Sierra Morris finished 52nd (28:04.8).

Odessa-Montour takes seventh
WATKINS GLEN--The Odessa-Montour varsity swim team took seventh at the Section IV Class C Championships, held Wednesday, Oct. 31, to Saturday, Nov. 3.
Tori Reese was third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:13.01) and third in the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.5). Kara Reese took fifth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:11.85) and eighth in the 200 yard IM (2:38.96). Megan Adams placed 11th in the 100 yard backstroke (1:15.99).
Katie Adams was 11th in the 100 yard butterfly (1:19.16), 16th in the 200 yard freestyle (2:35.18), and 16th in the 200 yard IM (2:54.18). Madison Moss took 12th in the 200 yard IM (2:44.9) and 15th in the 500 yard freestyle (6:42.99).
Delaney Paulisczak finished 12th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:33.06). Emilee Chaffinch was 15th in the 100 yard backstroke (1:25.68). Reagan Reese was 16th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:36.24).

Penn Yan volleyball wins title; Decker takes first
BLOOMFIELD--The Penn Yan girls varsity volleyball team won the school's first-ever Section V Class C1 crown by beating LeRoy in the sectional finals, Saturday, Nov. 3.
Penn Yan won in five sets: 26-24, 25-20, 18-25, 24-26, 26-24.
"Winning the first title for Penn Yan is so exciting," explained Coach Eileen Wunder. "We were so close last year, when we lost to Wayne in five, in the finals. This win is because a group of girls worked hard and everything came together at the right time."
Caitlin Wunder posted 24 kills and two aces. Serina Sheradin added 31 assists and nine digs. Hanna Brodmann earned 14 kills, 10 digs, and one ace. Akiya Brewer had three aces and 15 digs.
Wunder was named the most valuable player while Brewer and Brodmann were named to the all-tournament team.
With the win, the Mustangs will face Warsaw, the Class C2 champions, in the sectional regional playoffs, Tuesday, Nov. 6.
"The biggest challenge moving forward is playing teams that we don't know much about. We faced LeRoy in two tournaments earlier this season, so we had some information to go on to prepare," said Wunder.
Penn Yan topped Waterloo in the sectional semifinals, Thursday, Nov. 1. The final scores were 25-15, 25-19, 25-12.
Wunder had 16 kills, two blocks, and six digs. Sheradin contributed four aces, one kill, 19 assists, and 15 digs. Brodmann earned four aces, five kills, and 11 digs.
Cross country
The Penn Yan girls varsity cross country team took third and the boys fourth at the Section V Class Championships, Saturday, Nov. 3.
Joddie Decker claimed first overall for Class C, with a time of 20.07.6. Gracie Murphy took sixth (20:53.0), while Maci Nicholson was seventh (21:05.8). Jaina Doyle placed 25th (22:37.6). Paige McKee finished 36th (23:33.1). Jenna Curbeau was 43rd (23:54.2).
For the boys, Ayden Mowry was seventh (18:19.6). Connor Moore took 19th (19:01.8). David Young finished 32nd (19:25.2), followed by James Tette in 34th (19:30.5). Daniel Jiang placed 74th (21:02.0). Jon Gulick was 112th (25:44.9).

Hammondsport volleyball wins sectional crown
GENESEO--The Hammondsport girls varsity volleyball team defeated Batavia Notre Dame in five sets to win the Section V Class D3 championship, Saturday, Nov. 3.
The final scores were 27-25, 23-25, 19-25, 25-14, 25-18.
Erika Hilligus had 10 aces. Coach Erica Webster said, "Hilligus was able to maintain a strong serve as the team fought back from an 18-23 deficit to take the first set."
Julia Bennett and Shelby Sherman put down 11 and nine kills respectively.
"I knew going into this game that BND was going to give us a game," said Webster. "I told my girls to mentally prepare on going five sets and we've worked hard this week on playing long volleys and being smart during those long volleys. I'm very proud of how hard these girls worked in the offseason, season, and postseason."
Sherman and Brianna Pratt were named to the sectional all-star team and Bennett was named the Class D3 Most Valuable Player.
Hammondsport topped Fillmore, 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, Thursday, Nov. 1, in the sectional semifinals.
Hilligus had eight aces and 12 kills, followed by Sherman with six aces and 10 kills. Bennett added 10 kills. Pratt had 42 setter assists and six aces.
Cross country
The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country team placed fourth in the Section V Class D Championship, Saturday, Nov. 3.
Thomas Kressly led in third place (18:28.8). Liam Kressly placed 11th (19:13.9). George Drake took 30th (20:30.5), while Mike Beam finished 32nd (20:54.3). Eli Hill was 44th (21:23.1).
For the girls, Morgan Cheney was 63rd (26:12.5). Emma Thompson took 89th (29.24.0) and Isabel Sprague finished 90th (29:24.1).

Wood takes fourth for Scots
MIDLAKES--Dundee cross country runner Matt Wood took fourth place in the Class D Section V Championship, Saturday, Nov. 3. He recorded an 18:30.3. Austin Carrick of Notre Dame-Batavia won with a 17:57.2.
