Wrestlers win title at Odessa-Montour Duals ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen combined varsity wrestling team won the Odessa-Montour Duals, Saturday, Jan. 5. The joint team finished the home event with a 4-0 record, beating Whitney Point, 30-28; Thomas A. Edison, 34-30; Dundee, 48-18; and Cortland, 36-18. Josiah Lynch (132), Collin Haag (145), and Dylan Houseknecht (285) each won all four of their matches. Josh Bravo (220) and Andrew Hartford (126) both won three matches. Most Outstanding Wrestlers were named in each weight class, including Hartford and Houseknecht, with Haag and Lynch tying in their weight class for the distinction. The Odessa-Watkins wrestling team lost to Dryden, 54-21, Thursday, Jan. 3. Hartford (126) beat RJ Bellanger by decision, 11-4. Haag (145) pinned Anthony McLain in 1:19. Bravo (220) and Houseknecht (285) won by forfeit. Boys swimming The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team took eighth at the Invitational in the Glen tournament, Friday, Jan. 4, to Saturday, Jan. 5, held in Watkins. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Brett Walters, Bailey Hornbrook, Micah Brewster, and Jacob Mayette) was 10th in 1:41.58. The 400 yard freestyle relay team (Mayette, Hornbrook, Brewster, and Walters) also finished 10th in 3:52.85. The 200 yard medley relay team (Justin Ruocco, Caleb Thomas, Johnny Neidermaier, and Noah Hollenbeck) placed 14th with a time of 2:10.73. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Ruocco, Thomas, Hollenbeck, and Neidermaier) took 17th overall in 1:55.71. Odessa's boys varsity swim team defeated Southern Cayuga, 49-45, Thursday, Jan. 3. The 200 medley relay team (Tyler Carson, Thomas, Mayette, and Walters) finished first in 2:00.01. Hornbrook was first in the 200 freestyle (2:10.42) and second in the 100 freestyle (59.87). Carson took first in the 100 backstroke (1:14.02), while Thomas was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.00). Walters placed second in the 200 IM (2:31.24) and second in 100 breaststroke (1:23.68). Mayette finished second in the 50 freestyle (25.52) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:08.03). Brewster was second in the 500 freestyle (6:53.64). "We knew this meet would be close, and the team really wanted the win," said Coach Terri Brace. "They have worked really hard over the break, which was evidenced by the way they swam tonight. They were confident and focused, and swam as a team." Boys basketball The Odessa-Montour boys varsity basketball team beat Thomas A. Edison, 57-40, Friday, Jan. 4. Zach Elliott scored 16 points, followed by Paden Grover with 14. Devon Mahaney added 12 points and was 2-for-2 on free throws made. Preston Harris netted 11 points, while Derrick Lewis had four. Girls basketball The Indians' girls varsity basketball team defeated Dryden, 67-38, Wednesday, Jan. 2. Sara Gardner had 18 points. Olivia Grover posted 17 points, with eight rebounds. Alexis Saunders scored 11 points, while Kara Reese netted 10. Kennedey Heichel posted eight points and nine assists. Jolynn Minnier earned two points and seven rebounds. With the win, Odessa's record is now 7-3. Bowling The Odessa-Montour girls varsity bowling team blanked Newark Valley, 4-0. Thursday, Jan. 3. Pixie Kinner posted a 495 series. Jackie Vincent followed with a 424, while Jana Arias earned a 404. The boys fell, 3-1. Eric Rumsey led with a 567. Austin Hoyt posted a 449. Dom Elliott added a 397. Wes Wade contributed a 363.
Watkins Glen boys beat Dryden; girls top Candor WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen varsity basketball team topped Dryden in an away game, Saturday, Jan. 5. The final score was 53-43. Isaac McIlroy scored 19 points and Mitchell Pike had 14. The Senecas defeated Candor, 45-42, Thursday, Jan. 3. Owen Scholtisek led with 12 points. Girls basketball The Senecas' girls varsity basketball team beat Candor in an away game, Friday, Jan. 4. The final score was 51-40. Taylor Kelly scored 18 points, including a pair of three-point shots, five rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Hannah Morse and Adrienna Solomon each added 12 points. Morse posted 10 assists, six steals, and two rebounds, while Solomon had seven rebounds. Danielle Leszyk added six points, two rebounds, and two assists. Aislinn Klemann scored a three-point shot. With the win, Watkins' record is 11-1. The Watkins girls topped Oswego to win the More Than a Game (MTAG) Hoops for the Hospital championship game, Sunday, Dec. 30. The final score was 50-30. Leszyk was presented the All-Star Award, while Kelly was the Most Valuable Player. Kelly scored 21 points for the Senecas, with five rebounds and two steals. Leszyk earned 12 points, all three-point shots, and also had two rebounds and two steals. Kelsey Kernan added 10 points, with five rebounds. Morse posted five points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and two steals. Bowling The Watkins Glen girls varsity wrestling team topped Tioga, 4-0, Friday, Jan. 4. Nikole VanDyke led with a 560 series. Hayley Cornish added a 455, while Nancy Jackson bowled a 401. Makenzie Kellogg posted a 387. Alyiah Clink-Bentley had a 381. The boys fell, 3-1. H. Nathaniel Rose posted a 564. Wrett Brower earned a 506, followed by Casen Weeden with a 501. Wyatt Brower contributed a 473. Dylan Markley added 413. Both the boys and girls varsity wrestling teams blanked Thomas A. Edison, 4-0, Thursday, Jan. 3. Rose led the boys with a 645. Wrett Brower had a 549 series. Wyatt Brother posted a 502. Markley added a 490, while Weeden had a 481. Jackson bowled a 496 for the girls. VanDyke earned a 483, while Cornish added a 473 and Clink-Bentley had a 428. Kellogg contributed a 376. Boys swimming Watkins' boys varsity swim team placed 10th at the home Invitational in the Glen championship, Friday, Jan. 4, and Saturday, Jan. 5. The 200 yard medley relay team (Steven Gublo, Ben Swinnerton, Nate Wickham, and Clint Craven) took 15th with a time of 2:13.21. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Wickham, Swinnerton, Georgio Fazzary, and Craven) placed 18th in 1:56.71. Wickham was also 10th in the finals in the 50 Free with a time of 24.38. Indoor track The Watkins Glen boys and girls varsity indoor track teams placed seventh and eighth respectively for Interscholastic Athletic Conference schools at the Quinney Invitational, Friday, Jan. 4. For the boys, Nick Wilston was fourth in the long jump (17'3"). Kaylana Reckzis placed first in the 1500 meter race walk (9:17.24). Allison Gibson was second in the high jump (4'6"), fifth in the 55 meter dash (8.17), and fifth in the long jump (13'9.5"). Breanna Carl took seventh in the 1500 meter run (6:01.96). Haley Dean was seventh in the 300 meter dash (47.88). Cierra Barber finished seventh in the shot put (21'6"). Briana Hayes placed seventh in the long jump (12'2.5").
Dundee girls battle to the wire against Red Jacket DUNDEE--The Dundee Lady Scots varsity basketball team lost a hard-fought game against Red Jacket, 52-51, Friday, Jan. 4. "Dundee had the ball with nine seconds left and failed to get a shot off with the chance to win the game," said Coach Michael Strait. Mackenzie Strait netted 15 points, with five assists and four steals. Megan Sutherland added 12 points. Makenzie Cratsley scored 11 points, with 11 rebounds and six assists. Hallie Knapp posted nine points and 13 rebounds. Boys basketball The Scots' boys varsity basketball team lost to Red Jacket, Thursday, Jan. 3. The final score was 61-39. Isaac Seamans scored 11 points and Michael Hand nine. Austin Gibson added six points. Wrestling The Dundee varsity wrestling team participated at the Odessa-Montour Duals, Saturday, Jan. 5. The team finished 1-3 against Odessa, Whitney Point, Thomas Edison and Cortland. Michael Eaves and Kenneth Empson Jr. won most outstanding wrestler awards in the 99 and 170 pound weight divisions.
Penn Yan boys, girls basketball teams lose to Newark PENN YAN--The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team was beaten by Newark, 63-33, Friday, Jan. 4. Peyton Schuck led the Mustangs with 15 points, including four three-point shots. Conner Fingar contributed five points, followed by Kyler Lloyd with four points and Brennan Prather with three. Peter Nicholson, Colton Smith, and Kyle Berna each netted two points. Girls basketball The Lady Mustangs varsity basketball team lost to Newark, Friday, Jan. 4. The final score was 44-39. Individual statistics were not provided. Wrestling The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan combined varsity wrestling team lost to Wayne, 70-12, Thursday, Jan. 3. Justin Smith (132) pinned Dylan Draper in 1:48. Colton Yerkes (195) beat Bryan Plummer in 1:30.
