Houseknecht wins title at 285; swimmers take second WINDSOR--The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen combined varsity competed at the Section IV Division II Championship with Dylan Houseknecht (285) winning a sectional title, Saturday, Feb. 9. Houseknecht was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the sectional tournament and will now be competing for the state title in Albany on Feb. 22 and 23. His title match was against Trentyn Rupert of Newark Valley, who had won the 285 title for the past three years. There were 19 seconds left in the scoreless bout when Houseknecht pinned Rupert for the win. Also placing for Odessa/Watkins was Josh Bravo (220) earning fifth. Collin Haag (145) took sixth in his weight class. Boys swimming The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team placed second in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship, Saturday, Feb. 9. Brett Walters won first in the 100 free (53.65, a personal record) and first in the 100 backstroke in a PR of 1:02.97, a personal record). The 400 freestyle relay team (Walters, Micah Brewster, Bailey Hornbrook, and Justin Ruocco) placed first. The 200 medley relay team (Walters, Caleb Thomas, Johnny Niedermaier, and Hornbrook) took second in 1:53.36, less than one second behind first place. Brewster earned third in the 200 free (2:08.68, a personal record) and fourth place in the 500 (6:07.11, a personal record). Thomas was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.47, a personal record) and sixth in the 50 free (26.53, a personal record). Hornbrook placed fifth in the 50 free and sixth in the 200 free (2:09.20, a personal record). Niedermaier finished fourth in the 200 IM (2:30.36, a personal record) and fifth in the 100 fly (1:08.34, a personal record). Ruocco placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:10, a personal record) and seventh in the 100 free (1:00.84, a personal record). Tyler Carson was eighth in the 100 backstroke in a season best of (1:11.75, a season best) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke. Odessa's boys swim team lost to Southern Cayuga, 62-31, Monday, Feb. 4. Thomas was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.44). Neidermaier took second in the 200 IM (2:37.68) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:12.29). Walters placed second in the 50 freestyle (25.19) and second in the 100 freestyle (57.17). Brewster was second in the 500 freestyle (6:29.81) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:16.68). Hornbrook finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.77) and third in the 200 IM (2:39.03). Ruocco placed third in the 100 backstroke (1:14.79). Bowling The Odessa-Montour girls varsity bowling team took second at the Section IV Class D tournament, Saturday, Feb. 9. Jackie Vincent led with a 603 series over three games. Taryn Hoyt posted a 472, while Jana Arias added a 451. Pixie Kinner followed with a 448. Dezirae Minnier bowled a 398. The Indians' boys took ninth overall for Class D. Eric Rumsey led with a 541. Girls basketball The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team defeated Thomas A. Edison, 54-32, Friday, Feb. 8. Olivia Grover posted 21 points and 12 rebounds. Alexis Saunders added nine points. Sara Gardner netted seven points. With the win, the Indians have a 12-6 record. Boys basketball The Indians' boys varsity basketball team lost to Newfield, 55-44, Tuesday, Feb. 5. Devon Mahaney led with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jared Rumsey earned 10 points and four steals. Paden Grover netted seven points, with 10 rebounds. Preston Harris had five points and six assists.
Senior bowlers end season at sectionals; girls win VESTAL--The Watkins Glen boys placed fifth and the girls seventh at the Section IV Class C Tournament, Friday, Feb. 8. Wrett Brower led the boys with a 639 series. H. Nathaniel Rose bowled a 570. Wyatt Brower posted a 521, followed by Casen Weeden with a 484. For the girls, Nikole VanDyke earned a 509. Makenzie Kellogg scored a 443 series. Hayley Cornish had a 439, while Alyiah Clink-Bentley posted 435. Brooke Usher added a 329. "It was the end of an era today as the boys bowling season came to an end at the sectional tournament," said Coach Ward Brower. "Seniors Casen Weeden, Wrett Brower, and Wyatt Brower have been on the team since seventh grade, while seniors Alex Pesco and H. Nathaniel Rose since the eighth grade. Although over the years they have been part of winning a championship, winning individual medals, and setting school records, they will be remembered best for their sportsmanship and originality from their throwback satin jackets to their loud team pants." Boys swimming The Watkins Glen boys varsity swim team finished sixth in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship, Saturday, Feb. 9. The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Scott Brubaker, Clint Craven, Georgio Fazzary, and Nathaniel Wickham) placed second with 1:52.890. The 200 yard medley relay team (Steven Gublo, Ben Swinnerton, Dan Ely, and Fazzary) finished sixth in 2:28.55. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Brubaker, Craven, Owen Bingham, and Wickham was sixth in 4:18.18. In diving, Fazzary took first (294.95), followed by Gabe Santos (223.60) Wickham was second in the 50 yard freestyle (24.02) and second in the 100 yard freestyle (54.75). Brubaker took seventh in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:22.75) and ninth in the 200 yard IM (2:46.33). Swinnerton was eighth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:28.45). Craven was eighth in the 500 yard freestyle (6:58.90) and 10th in the 200 yard freestyle (2:29.20). Gublo finished ninth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:14.84) and 10th in the 100 yard freestyle (1:10.39). Santos was 10th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:33.23). The Senecas' swimmers defeated Greene, 99-60, Tuesday, Feb. 5. Wickham finished first in the 50 freestyle (24.83) and first in the 100 freestyle (56.34). Colby Thurston was first in the 100 butterfly (1:49.28), while Fazzary took first in diving (175.30). Brubaker placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.24) and second in the 200 IM (2:48.35). Craven was second in the 200 freestyle (2:30.53) and second in the 500 freestyle (7:10.98). Ely took second in the 100 butterfly (2:03.32) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:36.58). Gublo was second in the 100 backstroke (1:15.19) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:53.33). Swinnerton placed third in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:32.81). Bingham took third in the 500 freestyle (7:38.06). Girls basketball The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team topped Notre Dame, 63-39, Tuesday, Feb. 5. Taylor Kelly led with 28 points, including a pair of three-point shots, six rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Hannah Morse netted 12 points, with two three-point shots, 11 assists, three rebounds, three steals, and one block. Kelsey Kernan posted nine points, while Danielle Leszyk earned eight points and six rebounds. With the win, Watkins' record is 15-3.
Penn Yan boys basketball tops Midlakes; girls fall PENN YAN--The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team topped Midlakes, 68-62, in a close game, Thursday, Feb. 7. Kyle Berna led with 17 points. Peter Nicholson and Devon Gerhardt both scored 10 points. Conner Fingar and Colton Smith each posted eight points. Mason Kuver earned six points, while Peyton Schuck added four. The Mustangs were beaten by Newark, 62-42, Tuesday, Feb. 5. Berna led with 13 points, while Kyler Lloyd posted 10 points. Smith earned seven points. Kuver netted five points, followed by Nicholson with four. Schuck scored two points. Girls basketball The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team fell to Midalkes on the road, Friday, Feb. 8. The final score was 78-45. Peyton Comfort led with 22 points and seven rebounds. Hayley Andersen had seven points and four rebounds and four steals in the game. The Lady Mustangs lost a close game to Newark, 60-58, Wednesday, Feb. 6. Comfort scored 20 points, with four assists and four rebounds. Ashley Sisson and Sierra Harrison both posted 11 points. Sisson also posted six rebounds. Jenna Curbeau, Joddie Decker and Jammie Decker each had four points. Curbeau also posted eight rebounds, while Joddie Decker had seven assists. Andersen scored two points. Wrestling Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan wrestlers traveled to The College at Brockport to compete in the state qualifiers, Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9. Justin Smith (132) took second place losing to Palmyra-Macedon's Ethan Ferro in the championship finals. Aiden Mowry (113) finished fifth by defeating South Seneca's Dylan Campbell, 9-5.
Dundee boys lose to Harley-Allendale Columbia DUNDEE--The Dundee boys varsity basketball team lost to Harley-Allendale Columbia, Saturday, Feb. 9. The final score was 49-31. Individual stats were not available. Dundee fell to Red Jacket in a home game, Friday, Feb. 8. The final score was 65-45. Isaac Semans led with 14 points Girls basketball The Lady Scots varsity basketball team lost to Red Jacket, 49-37, Thursday, Feb. 7. Mackenzie Strait led with 12 points and five assists. Megan Sutherland netted nine points, followed by Hallie Knapp with six points and 10 rebounds. Delaine Nolan and Makenzie Cratsley both had four points. Cratsley also earned 10 rebounds. Alyssah Newell scored two points. Dundee lost to South Seneca in a home game, Tuesday, Feb. 5. The final score was 67-32. Strait had 11 points, while Cratsley netted nine points, with seven rebounds and five assists. Knapp added eight points and nine rebounds. Sutherland added three points, followed by Newell with one. Wrestling Dundee sent three wrestlers to the state qualifiers at The College at Brockport last weekend. Kenneth Empson took sixth place losing to Jake Minier of North Rose-Wolcott in 4:55.
Lakers beat Arkport-Canaseraga, 43-36 HAMMONDSPORT--The Lakers' boys varsity basketball team topped Arkport-Canaseraga, 43-36, in their second Steuben County game, Saturday, Feb. 9. CJ Hill led the Lakers with 10 points. Travis Beers and Parker Watson both scored eight points. Hammondsport's boys basketball team beat Arkport-Canaseraga in the first Steuben tournament game as well, Wednesday, Feb. 6. The final score was 55-44. The Lakers dominated for three quarters of the game, as the Wolves held them in the third quarter. Watson posted 21 points and two steals. Thomas Kressly netted 11 points with four steals. Girls basketball The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team won a close game to Prattsburgh/Avoca, Thursday, Feb. 7. The final score was 32-31. Destiny Hammond and Tea Flynn each had 12 points. The Lakers beat Arkport/Canaseraga, 55-25, Tuesday, Feb. 5. Ana Salom led with 16 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Hammond and Maddie Sprague both scored 11 points, with seven and six rebounds respectively. Jillian Underhill earned six points and nine rebounds. Flynn posted five points and six rebounds. Rorie Whitcomb netted four points, with six rebounds. Paula Garcia added two points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Shelby Sherman contributed five assists and three rebounds.
