SPORTS RECAP: Week of 5-29-19

Boys lacrosse plays for the championship Wednesday
HONEOYE FALLS--The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team will play in the Section V Class D finals against Palmyra-Macedon, Wednesday, May 29. The Mustangs are the second seed in Class D, while Pal-Mac is the top seed.
Penn Yan beat Midlakes, 11-1, in the sectional semifinals, Saturday, May 25.
Conner Fingar and Ayden Mowry both scored three goals. Fingar also had four assists. Mekhi Mahan and Chase Blumbergs each earned two goals. Colton Smith had one goal and one assist, while Devon Gerhardt assisted once. In the goal, Griffin Emerson earned eight saves.
The Mustangs topped Aquinas in the quarterfinals, Wednesday, May 22. The final score was 15-1.
Clay Kinyoun scored three goals and assisted once. Mahan also had three goals. Smith, Blumbergs, Mowry, and Gerhardt each scored twice. Smith assisted five times as well. Fingar added a goal. Emerson posted nine saves.
Girls lacrosse
The Lady Mustangs varsity lacrosse team was beaten by Mynderse-Romulus in the Section V Class D semifinals, Friday, May 24. The final score was 11-7.
The Penn Yan girls were seeded third in their class, while Mynderse-Romulus was second. Penn Yan ended the season with an 11-5 record.
The Mustangs beat Aquinas, 10-7, in the quarterfinals, Tuesday, May 21.
Allison Winslow led with five goals and two assists. Sydney Hulse scored twice. Reilly Cohick and Kaley Griffin both posted one goal and one assist, while Avery Castner had one goal. Hayley Andersen assisted three times.
Baseball
The Mustangs' varsity baseball team topped Wayland-Cohocton, 7-0, in the first round of the Section V B2 tournament, Saturday, May 25.
Clark Simmons and Brennan Prather both earned two hits. Simmons also had two RBIs, while Prather posted one. Andrew Garren was 1-for-3, with two RBIs. Peyton Schuck and Brendan Hawley each had one hit.
The Penn Yan team lost to Mynderse, 10-6, in the last regular game of the season, Wednesday, May 22.
Alex Foster earned two hits of the four the team totaled. Schuck posted a hit, with a double and one RBI. Mason MacKerchar also had a hit. On the pitcher's mound, Schuck struck out five, while Simmons struck out two.
Penn Yan fell to Waterloo, 12-3, Monday, May 20.
Garren had the Mustangs only hit, with one RBI. Shuck earned two runs, while Simmons had one. Prather struck out five players pitching. Simmons had three strikeouts.
Softball
The Lady Mustangs varsity softball team lost to Aquinas in the first round of Section V Class B2 championships, Friday, May 24. The final score was 11-2.
Track and field
The Penn Yan girls varsity track and field team placed 10th at the Section V Class B Championship, while the boys were 13th, Saturday, May 25.
Joddie Decker was first in the 3000 meter run (11:11.54) and fourth in the 1500 meter run (5:15.75). Gracie Murphy took first in the 2000 meter steeplechase (7:58.24).
For the boys, Dominic Lafferty placed third in the Pentathlon.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team lost to Livonia, the number two seed, in the Section V Class B quarterfinals, Tuesday, May 21. The final score was 5-0.
The number seven seeded Penn Yan beat Bath, 3-2, in the first round of Sectionals, Monday, May 20.
Cole Egburtson won in singles, 6-3, 6-2. In doubles, Reid Castner and Jeremy Fenton won, 6-1, 6-2. Connor Hunter and Spencer Christensen scored, 6-2, 6-0 to top their opponents.

Dundee track and field sees first place finishes
SOUTH SENECA--Dundee's boys varsity track and field team finished third at the Section V Class C Championship, Friday, May 24.
Leif Hoyt placed first in the discus (133'10"). Preston Cole was first in the shot put (42'10.5"). The 4x100 relay team also recorded a first-place finish (45.59).
Matt Wood finished third in the 3200 meter run (10:01.91) and third in the 1600 meter run (4:37.46).
The girls placed 15th. Lily Hall was second in the triple jump (34'10.25"). Ella Pollack took seventh in the Pentathlon.
Softball
Dundee's girls varsity softball team topped Wheatland Chili, 12-4, Thursday, May 23.
Alyssah Newell and Claudya Lyons were both 2-for-3 at bat. Megan Sutherland struck out 10 on the pitcher's mound.
The Lady Scots beat Romulus, 4-3, Monday, May 20.
Mercedez Roy was 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Newell was 2-for-3, with a homerun.
Baseball
The Scots' varsity baseball team fell to South Seneca/Romulus in the first round of the Section V Class C2 championships, Saturday, May 25. The final score was 21-0. No additional Dundee stats were provided.

Tennis falls to Oakfield-Alabama, 4-1
OAKFIELD--The Prattsburgh-Avoca-Hammondsport varsity tennis team fell to Oakfield-Alabama, 4-1, in the Section V Class DD Sectional quarterfinals, Tuesday, May 21.
The team's lone win came from Ryan Stanford, 6-2, 6-4.
The combined tennis team blanked Pavilion, 5-0, in the opening round of Sectionals, Monday, May 20.
In singles, the scores were: Colin Drain won 6-2, 6-0; Nolan Randall, 6-0, 6-0; and Ryan Stanford, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Jeremiah Hubbard and Elijah Lenhard won, 7-5, 6-3, while Isabelle Beecher and Hannah Stewart also won, 6-1, 6-2.
Softball
The Bradford/Hammondsport varsity softball team lost to Fillmore in the Section V Class D1 quarterfinals, Saturday, May 25. The final score was 5-1.
The combined softball team topped Friendship, 5-1, in the last regular game of the season, Monday, May 20.
Track and field
The Hammondsport girls varsity track and field team placed ninth at the Section V Class D Championship, Saturday, May 25. The boys were 11th.
Jillian Underhill placed first in the 100 meter hurdles (17.20). Alivia Phenes was second in the Pentathlon.
Thomas Kressly took first in the 3200 meter run (10:34.27). The 4x800 relay team (Thomas Kressly, George Drake, Jake Doyle, and Liam Kressly) was third in 9:05.83.

Odessa-Montour girls take first
MARATHON--The Odessa-Montour girls varsity track and field team claimed the Section IV Class D championship, while the boys took second, Wednesday, May 22.
Kennedey Heichel was first in the 100 meter hurdles (16.46), first in the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.90), and first in the pole vault (10'0"). Nadia Simpson took first in the 100 meter dash (12.93). Victoria Brewster placed second in the 100 meter dash (13.05).
For the boys, Zach Elliott won first in the shot put (53'7") and first in the discus (149'0"). Preston Harris was second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.98) and third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.27). Paden Grover was second in the high jump (5'10"). Andy Hartford took third in the pole vault (10'6").
Softball
The Odessa-Montour varsity softball team lost to Harpursville, 8-4, in the opening round of the Section IV Class C championship, Friday, May 24.
Isabel Foote had two of the Indians seven hits. Grace Vondracek earned a hit, with two RBIs and a homerun. Lydia Lynch and Emma Lodge both posted a hit and an RBI. The final two hits came from Jolynn Minnier and Sam Sipes.
Pitching, Vondracek struck out six. With the loss, Odessa ends with a 10-7 record.
Baseball
The Seneca Indians varsity baseball team fell to Susquehanna Valley, 4-0, Friday, May 24.
Caleb Thomas and Austin Voorheis each had a hit. On the pitcher's mound, Derrick Lewis struck out two players.
The combined Odessa/Watkins team lost to Notre Dame, Monday, May 20. The final score was 9-7.
Lewis and Voorheis both earned two hits.

Watkins competes in Class C
ONEONTA--The Watkins Glen varsity track and field teams both finished 13th at the Section IV Class C Championship, Wednesday, May 22.
Nick Wilston placed fourth in the triple jump (39'6", a personal record) and sixth in the long jump (19'3", a personal record). Casen Weeden was sixth in the discus (113'2").
For the girls, Breanna Carl finished sixth in the steeplechase (9:58). All three athletes were named to the Class C All-Star team.
The state qualifier meet will be held Wednesday, May 29, and Thursday, May 30, at Union Endicott.
Tennis
The Watkins Glen varsity tennis team competed in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship, Wednesday, May 22, with all players advancing into the semifinals.
"With eleven school districts competing it was a challenging day on the courts," said Coach Scott Morse.
For singles players, Clint Craven was second. Dylan Morse took third and Nate Wickham was fourth. In doubles, Ali LaMoreaux and Bryson Simmons placed second. Hannah Morse and Jill Cantieni, as well as Kathleen Clifford and Enkang Lin took third.
