SPORTS RECAP: Week of 6-5-19

Mustangs lacrosse will play at state semifinals
ROCHESTER--The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team advances to the New York state Class D semifinals, Wednesday, June 5, against the Section III Champions, LaFayette/Onondaga after two big wins last week.
The Mustangs topped Eden in the state regionals, Saturday, June 1. The final score was 8-5.
Eden took an early 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Penn Yan scored three goals by halftime to regain the lead, 4-3. The Mustangs led 6-5 at the end of the third and won 8-5. With the win, the Mustangs' record is now 14-6.
Colton Smith led with four goals and one assist. Conner Fingar scored three times. Mekhi Mahan earned one goal. Devon Gerhardt assisted twice, while Ayden Mowry earned one assist. In the goal, Jeff Kinyoun had one save.
Penn Yan won the Section V Class D championship in overtime, Wednesday, May 29, against Palmyra-Macedon, 10-9.
Fingar led with three goals and two assists, followed by Smith with three goals including the game-winner with five seconds left on the clock. Clay Kinyoun posted two goals and one assist. Gerhardt and Chase Blumbergs each scored once, while Gerhardt also assisted twice. Emerson posted six saves in the goal.
The all-tournament team included: Conner Fingar (MVP), Griffin Emerson, Bryan Duran, Clay Kinyoun, Matt Mattoon and Colton Smith.
Track and field
Penn Yan runners competed at Sodus last Friday, May 31 in the state qualifier for division two.
Joddie Decker was first in the 3000 meter run (10:56.71). She also was fourth in the 1500 meter run (5:12.44).
Gracie Murphy took seventh in the 2000 meter steeplechase (8:07.66) and was eighth in the 3000 meter run with an 11:35.91.
Dominic Lafferty was eighth in the boys pentathlon with a 2334 score.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team lost to Naples, 3-2, Friday, May 31.
Lukas Spears won in singles, 7-5, 6-0. Cole Egburtson and Reid Castner secured a win in doubles, 6-3, 6-0.
Baseball
The Mustangs' varsity baseball team fell to LeRoy in the Section V Class B2 quarterfinals, Wednesday, May 29. The final score was 9-2.
Brennan Prather was 3-for-4 at bat with a triple. Jon Mashewske had two hits, with one RBI, while Andrew Garren also posted two hits. Peyton Schuck had one hit.
On the pitcher's mound, Schuck struck out three. Prather and Clark Simmons each had one strikeout.

Dundee track athletes compete at state qualifier
SODUS--A number of Dundee track and field competitors participated at the state qualifying meet, Friday, May 31. The Scots recorded times in division two.
Matt Wood was fourth in the boys 1600 meter run, 4:37.85. He also took sixth in the 3200 run with a 10:05.00.
Lily Hall finished sixth in the girls triple jump, 34' 1.50".
The boys 4x100 and 4x800 relay teams both were eighth.
Leif Hoyt took eighth in the discus, 127' 7".
Preston Cole was ninth in the shot put 41' 2.75" and 10th in the discus 113' 6".

Odessa sends three to state track meet
ENDICOTT--The Indian's Zach Elliott, Paden Grover, and Nadia Simpson all qualified for the New York state track and field tournament, Wednesday, May 29, to Thursday, May 30.
Elliott won first overall in the shot put (55'11"). Grover placed third in the Pentathlon. Simpson finished first in Division II, second overall, in the 100 meter dash (12.63). All three advance to the state competition.
Elliott was also second in the discus (151'0"). Grover took first overall in the high jump (6'1.25"), second in the 110 meter hurdles (17.03), and fifth in the shot put (32'7.75").
Also competing for the Indians was Kennedey Heichel taking fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.79) and fourth in the pole vault (9'8").

Planty qualifies for state tournament
ENDICOTT--Watkins' Gabe Planty won the Section IV Division II championship in the 1600 meter run Thursday, May 30, qualifying to compete in the New York state tournament.
Planty finished with a 4:24.85 time, winning Division II and coming in second at the meet overall. Also for Watkins, Max Evans was second in the Division II Pentathlon, breaking his current school record by 146 points (2,647 points total). However, Evans does not advance to states because he did not place first or hit the state automatic time.
Nick Wilston also finished 15th in the triple jump (37'9.5") out of both divisions combined. Jordan Avery took 19th in the 200 meter dash (24.80).
