SPORTS RECAP: Week of 9-18-19

Seneca Indians football posts win, moves to 1-1
ODESSA--The Seneca Indians football team rebounded after their first-week loss to defeat Bainbridge-Guilford, 44-12, Friday, Sept. 13.
The combined Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour offensive line earned 381 total yards. Matt Irwin contributed 63 yards on seven carries, with two touchdowns. Derrick Lewis completed four out of five passes for 80 yards.
On defense, Gage Arcangeli, Jared Rumsey, Dominick Fazzary, and Cameron Holland each registered five tackles.
Boys soccer
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity soccer team beat Watkins Glen/Dundee, Friday, Sept. 13. The final score was 2-1. Preston Harris scored twice.
Girls soccer
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity soccer team fell to Waverly, Wednesday, Sept. 11. The final score was 5-2.
Odessa had three shots on goal and two corner kicks. Hannah Nolan and Ida Sidle each scored a goal. Camille Sgrecci assisted once. In goal, Grace Vondracek had 13 saves.
The Indians blanked Tioga, Monday, Sept. 9. The final score was 4-0.
Odessa had 14 shots on goal. Nolan scored three goals, while Autumn Garrison scored one. Tori Brewster posted one assist. In goal, Vondracek had six saves.
Volleyball
The Indians' varsity volleyball team lost to Candor, Thursday, Sept. 12. The final scores were 25-12, 25-10, 25-12.
Jolynn Minnier posted one ace, one kill, one block, and three service points. Rhys Stermer had two aces, one assist, five digs, and two service points. Hannah Chapman added two assists and three digs, while Karlee Dudgeon earned one kill and two digs. Cheianne Webster also had six digs.
The Indians defeated Newfield in a tie-breaker, Wednesday, Sept. 11. The final scores were 17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24, 25-17.
Stermer earned 14 aces and eight kills. Chapman posted three aces and four kills. Haley Landon had six aces and 10 assists.
Odessa was beaten by Waverly, 25-5, 25-8, 25-11, Monday, Sept. 9.
Minnier posted one ace, two kills, one block, three digs, and one point. Sam Sipes added three digs and four points. Stermer contributed one ace, one kill, one block, nine digs, and two points. Landon had one ace, two assists, two digs, and two points.
Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour varsity swim team suffered a loss to Watkins Glen in an away meet, Thursday, Sept. 12. The final score was 95-67.
Delaney Paulisczak was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:35.18) and second in the 50 freestyle (32.78). Madison Moss finished second in the 500 freestyle (6:16.73) and second in the 200 individual medley (2:34.31).
Reagan Reese was second in the 100 breaststroke (2:08.19), while Megan Adams took second in the 200 freestyle (2:35.69).
The Indians swim team fell to Waverly, 53-37, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Moss won first in the 200 individual medley (2:35.97) and first in the 500 freestyle (6:17.04). Emilee Chaffinch was second in the 100 freestyle (1:14.17). Kara Reese finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:14.86), while Reagan Reese took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:34.33).

Watkins girls lose two; boys defeat South Seneca
WATKINS GLEN--The Senecas' girls varsity soccer team lost to Newark Valley, 8-1, in the first round of the GLM Tournament, Thursday, Sept. 12.
Carly Arnold scored for Watkins. In goal, Natalie Edmister had 17 saves, while Lilly Ameigh earned five.
"I thought we played a very good first half," said Coach Scott Morse. "I was impressed with our intensity and defense and we were very much in the game. In the second half we faded and made some mistakes that hurt us, but I'm very pleased with the girls and where we can go from here as a team."
Watkins fell to Newfield, Monday, Sept, 9. The final score was 3-2.
Arnold posted two goals, both off direct free kicks. The team also had five corner kicks. Goalie Edmister had six saves.
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen/Dundee boys varsity soccer team won over South Seneca in the consolation round of the GLM Tournament, Saturday, Sept. 14. The final score was 5-1.
Isaac McIlroy scored twice, assisted by Dylan Morse and Dave Semans. Josiah Wysocki also scored two goals. Coach Nils Watson said the fifth goal "came from a scramble in front of the goal, Tom Elliott sent one to the back of the net." Goalie Bryce Kelly had nine saves.
The combined team lost to Odessa-Montour, 2-1, Friday, Sept. 13.
Morse scored once. Coach Nils Watson said, "Kelly played a great game in goal for WG. Also, new to the game of soccer, Travis Hill, a senior for WG, played an outstanding game."
The Watkins/Dundee team was beaten by Southern Cayuga, Tuesday, Sept. 10. The final score was 7-0.
Volleyball
The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team fell to Newfield, 25-20, 25-23, 25-22, Friday, Sept. 13.
Carlie Baker had three aces, nine kills, two blocks, and five service points. Jade Scaptura posted seven service points. Melanie Wysocki added one dig and six service points. Katrina Ricca had two kills and five service points.
The Senecas lost to Tioga, Monday, Sept. 9. The final scores were 25-6, 25-7, 25-11.
Baker earned one ace, two kills, and one dig. Ava VanDusen added one ace and one kill. Kelsey Demillo also posted two kills.
Cross country
The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team finished second out of five teams while hosting a meet at Watkins Glen State Park, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Gabe Planty led the pack in first overall (16:20.29). Sam Thorsland finished in 10th (18:09.68). Steven Gublo placed 14th (18:56.28), followed by Ben Swinnerton in 15th (18:58.17) and Elliott Holland in 16th (19:15.85).
The girls competed, but did not place as a team. Breanna Carl took 14th (22:39.00). Makenzie Kellogg placed 19th (24:02.53).

Dundee volleyball loses two; Wood finishes first
Dundee--The Lady Scots' varsity volleyball team lost to Mynderse, Wednesday, Sept. 11. The final scores were 25-12, 25-8, 25-3.
Makenzie Cratsley earned one dig and two attacks. Lily Hall posted two attacks and one assist. Hayley Herrick had two digs and one attack.
Dundee fell to Honeoye in four games, 23-25, 25-26, 25-23, 25-19, Monday, Sept. 9.
Cratsley posted 11 digs, seven kills, and six aces. Renae Gregory added five digs, three kills, and three assists. Hall earned six kills, two assists, and four aces.

Cross country
The Dundee boys varsity cross country team competed at Red Creek, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Matt Wood placed first overall (17:17). Steven Webster was ninth (19:52), while Gabe Dillon took 19th (21:49). Camden Buchanan finished 24th (22:25).

Penn Yan girls soccer wins two; football goes to 2-0
Geneva--The Lady Mustangs varsity soccer team defeated Geneva, 2-0, in an away game, Friday, Sept. 13.
Hayley Andersen scored both goals, both times with assists from Kaley Griffin. In the goal, Elle Harrison had two saves.
Penn Yan ended the Wednesday, Sept. 11, game with a 0-0 tie against Mynderse. Harrison posted 10 saves in the goal.
Penn Yan topped Romulus/South Seneca, 9-1, Monday, Sept. 9.
Andersen and Sierra Harrison both scored three points each. Griffin, Leah Moniot, and Morgan Andersen each earned a goal. Elle Harrison made 11 saves.
Football
The Mustangs' varsity football team secured another win, this time on their home field, by beating Marcus Whitman, 35-12, Friday, Sept. 13.
Kyle Berna went 24-for-29 passing. He amassed 223 total yards, with two touchdowns.
On the receiving end, Mekhi Mahan earned 109 yards with 11 catches. Kyler Lloyd added 71 yards with nine receptions. Brennan Prather posted 35 yards, while Jon Droney had eight yards.
Berna also had 115 yards over 12 runs, with a touchdown. Mahan rushed eight times for 63 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Berna and Mahan both recorded nine tackles. Lloyd and Julien Miller each had eight tackles. Hunter Van Housen, Andrew Garren, and Mason Peterson each tackled five players.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team blanked Newark, 5-0, Friday, Sept. 13.
The singles scores were: Molly Pullen, 6-1, 6-0; Claire Pullen, 6-0, 6-0; and Abigail Garvey, 6-1, 6-0. The doubles scores were: Jayden Hollister and Sam Denson, 6-0, 6-0; and Grace Worth and Sydney Moravec, 6-0, 6-0.
The Mustangs beat Waterloo, Monday, Sept. 9. The final score was 5-0.
Scores for singles players were: Molly Pullen, 6-0, 6-0; Claire Pullen, 6-0, 6-0; and Garvey, 6-0, 6-0. Doubles pair Denson and Hollister won 6-0, 6-1; and Moravec and Worth, 6-0, 6-0.
Volleyball
Penn Yan's varsity volleyball team topped Midlakes in five games, Thursday, Sept. 12. The final scores were 20-25, 25-11, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.
Hanna Brodmann posted four aces, eight kills, 16 assists, and five digs. Caitlin Wunder had five aces, 10 kills, 17 assists, and two blocks. Lauren Chinski earned seven aces and three kills. Kayla Andersen secured five aces and four blocks.
The Lady Mustangs beat Geneva, 26-24, 25-15, 25-14, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Serina Sheradin had nine aces, two kills, 11 assists, and seven digs. Wunder earned 10 kills, one ace, and two blocks. Brodmann posted two aces, four kills, and 10 digs. Chinski had four aces, two kills, and two assists.
Boys soccer
The Mustangs boys varsity soccer team defeated Waterloo, 4-1, Thursday, Sept. 12.
Brigham Hansen scored twice, while Brendan Pinckney and Tyler Griffin each had one goal. Nick Jarecke posted three assists. Caiden Demarco assisted once. In goal, Mason MacKerchar earned three saves and Oliver Connelly had two.
Penn Yan lost to Newark, Tuesday, Sept. 10. The final score was 2-0. In goal, MacKerchar posted 10 saves.
Golf
Penn Yan's varsity golf team tied with Wayne, 259-259, Thursday, Sept. 12.
Peter Nicholson led the Mustangs with a 47, the lowest score of the match. Clayton Koivuniemi followed with a 49. Kevin Smith added a 53, while Max Brodmann golfed a 54. Cameron Bassage posted a 56.
The Penn Yan team beat Midlakes, Wednesday, Sept. 11. The final score was 234-242.
Nicholson led with a 44, followed by Koivuniemi with a 46. Bassage posted a 47. Clark Simmons added a 48, while Smith golfed a 49.
The Mustangs topped Palmyra-Macedon, 226-256, Monday, Sept. 9.
Nicholson golfed a 42, with a birdie on hole six. Koivuniemi also posted a 42. Brodmann earned a 44. Smith and Bassage both earned a 49, followed by Simmons with a 50.
Cross country
The Penn Yan varsity cross country teams competed at Bloomfield, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
For the boys, Ayden Mowry placed second overall (18:50). David Young took fifth (19:26), followed by James Tette (19:30). Teagan Fingar placed 15th (23:16). Zac Smith was 16th (23:20), while Dominic Lafferty was 17th (23:24).
Joddie Decker led the girls with a 20:18. Grace Murphy was third (23:44), while Jaina Doyle was fourth (23:47). Abby Bodine finished eighth (27:30). Kiana Larham placed 17th (31:06).

Lakers volleyball tops Arkport-Canaseraga
HAMMONDSPORT--Hammondsport's varsity volleyball team topped Arkport-Canaseraga, 25-7, 25-6, 25-7, Wednesday, Sept. 11.
Erika Hilligus led all servers with 25 aces. Julia Bennett and Vittoria Cateni had seven and five kills respectively.
With the win, the Lakers' record is 5-0.
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport/Bradford varsity girls soccer team blanked Prattsburgh, Saturday, Sept. 14. The final score was 2-0.
Aubrie Cole and Destiny Hammond both scored once. In goal, Rorie Whitcomb and Kirsta Sleeve each posted two saves.
The combined soccer team beat Arkport/Canaseraga, 4-2, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Hannah Hoerter scored twice. Jillian Underhill and Alivia Phenes each scored once. Phenes also assisted twice, while Hoerter had one assist.
Boys soccer
The Lakers' boys varsity soccer team fell to Prattsburgh, 4-1, Saturday, Sept. 14.
Hammondsport had seven shots on goal, three corner kicks, and nine saves in goal. John Wells scored, with an assist from Nevin Davis.
The Hammondsport team lost to Bradford, Wednesday, Sept. 11. The final score was 5-0. The Lakers had seven shots on goal and 14 saves in their own goal.
