SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10-2-19

Penn Yan football falls; volleyball tops Dundee
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team was defeated by Letchworth/Warsaw, 28-14, Saturday, Sept. 28.
Kyle Berna passed for 88 yards and was 11-for-24 on the day. Brennan Prather caught four passes for 60 yards. Mekhi Mahan had five receptions for 21 yards. Kyler Lloyd added seven yards with four catches.
Berna rushed for 30 yards, with one touchdown. Mahan had six yards, while Andrew Garren added two more yards. Mahan also posted an 88 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Defensively, Mahan led with 20 tackles. Berna had 12 tackles. Prather and Garren both earned nine tackles. Damien Snyder and Jon Masheweske each added seven tackles.
Volleyball
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team defeated Dundee in three games, Monday, Sept. 30. The scores were 25-10, 25-13 and 25-12.
Hanna Brodmann recorded nine aces, four kills and four digs. Kayla Andersen had five aces, one kill and one block. Serina Sheradin posted three aces, three kills, 12 assists and one dig. Caitlin Wunder had five aces, nine kills, one assist and four digs.
The varsity volleyball team lost to Wayne in four sets, Thursday, Sept. 26. The final scores were 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18.
Wunder posted 21 kills, three block assists, and 14 digs. Brodmann had seven kills and 15 digs. Sheradin added 28 assists and one ace.
Cross country
The Penn Yan varsity cross country teams competed at Mynderse, Tuesday, Sept. 24.
For the girls, Joddie Decker won first overall (20:34). Grace Murphy was third (22:35), followed by Jaina Doyle in fourth (22:41). Jenna Curbeau took 13th place (24:53) and Abby Bodine finished 14th (25:21).
Ayden Mowry led the boys in second place (18:27). James Tette followed in third (19:28) and David Young was fourth (19:36). Zac Smith placed 12th (21:41). Teagan Fingar finished in 14th (21:47).
Tennis
The Mustangs' varsity tennis team topped Midlakes, 5-0, Thursday, Sept. 26.
The singles scores were: Molly Pullen, 6-0, 6-0; Claire Pullen, 6-0, 6-0; and Abigail Garvey, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, Sam Denson and Jayden Hollister beat their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. Grace Worth and Sydney Moravec won by forfeit, 6-0, 6-0.
Penn Yan beat Palmyra-Macedon, 4-1, Wednesday, Sept. 25.
In singles, the scores were: Molly Pullen, 6-2, 6-1; Claire Pullen, 6-2, 6-0; and Garvey, 6-1, 6-2. The doubles team of Denson and Hollister won, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
The Penn Yan team blanked Marcus Whitman, Tuesday, Sept. 24. The overall score was 5-0.
Singles scores were: Molly Pullen, 6-1, 6-1; Claire Pullen, 6-0, 6-2; and Garvey, 6-3, 6-1.
Doubles scores were: Hollister and Denson, 6-3, 6-3; and Moravec and Worth, 6-3, 6-0.
Golf
The Penn Yan varsity golf team beat Waterloo, 228-236, Thursday, Sept. 26.
Peter Nicholson led with a 39, the lowest of the match. Clay Koivuniemi earned a 45, while Max Brodmann had a 46. Cameron Bassage carded a 48, with a birdie on number six. Clark Simmons and Kevin Smith each posted a 50.
The Mustangs topped Palmyra-Macedon, Wednesday, Sept. 25, with a season low score of 211-229.
Nicholson posted a 38, followed by Brodmann with a 41. Koivuniemi had a 43. Bassage golfed a 44, while Smith had a 45 with a birdie on number seven.
Penn Yan defeated Newark, Tuesday, Sept. 24. The final score was 228-302.
Smith earned a 42, with a birdie on number three from 55 yards out in the fairway. Koivuniemi shot a 43 with a birdie on number nine. Brodmann posted a 44.
Girls soccer
The Penn Yan girls varsity soccer team suffered a loss to Wayne, 5-0, Friday, Sept. 27.
The Lady Mustangs beat Midlakes, 4-1, Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Hayley Andersen scored twice. Leah Moniot and Morgan Andersen each scored one goal. Hayley Andersen, Sierra Andersen, and Moniot all assisted once. In goal, Elle Harrison had seven saves.
Penn Yan blanked Marcus Whitman, Monday, Sept. 23. The final score was 2-0.
Moniot scored first, with an assist from Hayley Andersen. The second goal came from Andersen, with an assist from Morgan Andersen. Harrison earned three saves in goal.

Dundee cross country runners compete at McQuaid
ROCHESTER--Dundee competed at the McQuaid Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 28.
In the A-3 division, Matt Wood was seventh (16:36.7). Steven Webster was 100th with 18:56.2. Gabe Dillon took 227th in 20:48.3.
The Scots' country team competed at Marion, Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Wood finished second (17:51) out of 45 runners. Webster was eighth (20:21), followed by Dillon in 21st (21:41). Camden Buchanan took 29th (23:45). Logan Buchanan was 32nd (24:31).
Volleyball
The Dundee varsity volleyball team lost to Penn Yan in three games, Monday, Sept. 30. The game scores were 25-10, 25-13 and 25-12.
Makenzie Cratsley had four attacks and seven digs. Abigail Miller recorded four digs and one assist. Renae Gregory posted one dig, three assists and one block.
The volleyball team fell to Campbell-Savona, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21, Monday, Sept. 23.
Cratsley posted eight digs, two attacks, and three aces. Miller had three digs, two attacks, and one block.
Football
The Dundee varsity football team fell to Holley, 40-14, on the road, Friday, Sept. 27.
Joshua Cramer amassed 284 yards for Dundee over 27 carries. Kenneth Empson Jr. picked up 76 yards on eight carries, with one touchdown. Empson had 67 yards on two kickoff returns.
Brady Richardson also had 16 yards on nine carries with one touchdown. Richardson was 2-for-5 passing for 12 yards.
On defense, Cramer led with eight tackles. Empson added six tackles, while Logan Corey and Tate Hoyt each had four tackles.
Girls soccer
The Lady Scots varsity soccer team fell to Naples, Wednesday, Sept. 25. The final score was 3-0. In goal, Claudya Lyons earned nine saves.
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen/Dundee boys varsity soccer team lost to Newark Valley, 9-3, in an away game, Thursday, Sept. 26.
Peyton Boudino scored the first goal of the game. Isaac McIlroy scored off of a rebound penalty kick. Dylan Morse rounded out scoring with the last goal.
The combined soccer team blanked Waverly, 5-0, Tuesday, Sept. 24.
McIlroy scored three times. Collin Gaylord earned two goals. Bryce Kelly had eight saves, plus two more penalty kick saves, in goal.

Lakers lose two games
FRIENDSHIP--The Hammondsport/Bradford girls varsity soccer team lost to Friendship, Friday, Sept. 27. The final score was 1-0. In goal, Kirsta Sleeve earned two saves.
The combined soccer team lost to Avoca, 6-2, Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Danielle Conley and Hannah Hoerter both scored once. Ciera Celelli had one assist. In goal, Rorie Whitcomb led with 10 saves. Sleeve posted six saves.
Hammondsport/Bradford lost Canisteo-Greenwood, 4-0, Monday, Sept. 23.
Goalie Whitcomb earned 14 saves. Sleeve also had three saves.
Cross country
The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country team competed at the McQuaid Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 28.
Thomas Kressly placed sixth (16:35.9) in the A-3 division. Liam Kressly was 24th (17:12.6), followed by George Drake in 60th (18:08.7). Matt Lyle took 69th (18:16.3). Mike Beam finished 99th (18:51.5).
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team suffered a loss to Alfred-Almond, Thursday, Sept. 26. The final score was 5-0.
Volleyball
The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team defeated Arkport-Canaseraga in three sets, Friday, Sept. 27. The final scores were 25-9, 25-12, 25-12.
Erika Hilligus led at the service line with 19 aces, followed by Brianna Pratt with 10. At the net, Julia Bennett posted five kills. Hilligus earned four kills, while Vittoria Cateni and Brianna Hill had three and two kills respectively.
The Lakers' record is now 9-1.
Hammondsport lost to Bloomfield, 22-25, 25-21, 18-25, 26-24, 25-17.
Hilligus posted six aces. Bennett had 14 kills and six blocks.

Seneca Indians fall in Odessa homecoming game
ODESSA--The Seneca Indians fought to earn an early lead in the Friday, Sept. 27, homecoming game against Newark Valley, but lost momentum and ultimately were beaten, 44-25.
"The mission started out perfectly with a 19-6 lead, but giving up a 60 yard touchdown run, then a 55 yard touchdown pass can derail a team very quickly," said Coach Trevor Holland. "Momentum that was certainly in our favor early on was hard to get back after such big plays."
Overall, the combined Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour team had 210 yards rushing. Owen Scholtisek led with 16 carries for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Travon Jones had 12 carries to earn 46 yards, plus 21 yards receiving with one touchdown.
Derrick Lewis posted two carries for five yards and a touchdown. Lewis was also 3-for-8 passing for 25 yards. Ben Mathews added 11 yards, while Matt Irwin carried for seven yards.
Girls swimming
Odessa-Montour's girls varsity swim team fell to Lansing, Thursday, Sept. 26. The final score was 51-43.
Madison Moss placed first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:13.06) and second in the 500 yard freestyle (6:25.29). Kara Reese was second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:44.94) and second in the 100 yard freestyle (1:05.28).
Katie Adams finished second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:13.06). Julia Paulisczak took second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:43.87). Reagan Reese was second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:35.93).
The Indians topped Whitney Point, 72-20, Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Reese was first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:45.90) and first in the 100 yard freestyle (1:04.91). Adams placed first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:20.08) and first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:17.89). Moss took first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:26.43) and first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:27.49). Emilee Chaffinch won first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:43.62).
Girls soccer
Odessa-Montour's girls varsity soccer team lost to Newark Valley, 5-0, Saturday, Sept. 28. The Indians had three corner kicks.
The Indians blanked Newfield, Monday, Sept. 23. The final score was 6-0.
Boys soccer
The Indians' boys varsity soccer team was beaten by Waverly, Thursday, Sept. 26. The final score was 3-0.
"We had shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net," said Coach Katherine Taber.
The Odessa-Montour boys fell to Spencer-Van Etten/Candor, Tuesday, Sept. 24. The final score was 3-2.
Odessa scored the first two goals within three minutes of the game starting on breakaway plays by Preston Harris. However, Spencer/Candor followed up with three more goals within the next eight minutes. The score sat at 3-2 for the remainder of the game.
Volleyball
The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team beat Watkins Glen in four sets, Monday, Sept. 23. The final scores were 25-10, 14-25, 25-13, 25-21.
Rhys Stermer posted six aces, six kills, two blocks, two digs, and 16 service points. Cheianne Webster earned eight aces, two kills, one block, one dig, and 14 service points. Jolynn Minnier added two aces, two assists, two kills, two blocks, four digs, and 10 service points. Hannah Chapman had three aces, one kill, four digs, and seven service points.

Watkins Glen girls soccer loses; swimming wins
WATKINS GLEN--Watkins' girls varsity soccer team lost to Spencer-Van Etten/Candor, Thursday, Sept. 26. The final score was 5-1.
Adrie Solomon scored once for Watkins Glen, with an assist from Carly Arnold. In goal, Lilly Ameigh had 20 saves.
"Haley Dean did a great job containing their best player, but we let some others get off too many shots in the first half," said Coach Scott Morse.
The Senecas were beaten by Tioga, 5-3, Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Jenna Solomon led with two goals, and one assist. Adrie Solomon earned a goal and an assist. Arnold also assisted once. In the goal, Ameigh had 17 saves.
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen/Dundee boys varsity soccer team lost to Newark Valley, 9-3, in an away game, Thursday, Sept. 26.

The Watkins Glen girls varsity swim team defeated Southern Cayuga, 55-39, Friday, Sept. 27.
Amanda Wilbur won first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:29.48) and first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:07.64). Thalia Marquez took first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:03.85). Peighton Cervoni was first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.12). Faye Mooney placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:18.10).
The Senecas topped Dryden, 99-71, Tuesday, Sept. 24.
Marquez was first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:09.84) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:49.87). Wilbur took first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:28.85) and first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:07.89).
Cervoni placed first in the 50 yard freestyle (27.25) and first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.53). Alannah Klemann finished first in the 100 yard freestyle (1:04.02). Mooney was first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:17.39).
Cross country
The Watkins Glen boys and girls varsity cross country teams competed at the McQuaid Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 28.
Gabe Planty was seventh (15:53.8) in the small schools division. Max Evans was 44th (17:21.7) and Sam Thorsland took 55th (17:30.8). Steven Gublo finished 80th (18:07.5). Elliott Holland finished 126th (19:37.3). Ben Swinnerton was 127th (19:38.3). Liam Smith placed 137th (20:47.9), followed by Lawrence Majors in 139th (20:52.4).
For the girls, Breanna Carl took 58th (21:59.0). Makenzie Kellogg was 60th (22:02.0).
Volleyball
The Senecas' varsity volleyball team lost to Odessa-Montour, Monday, Sept. 23. The final scores were 25-10, 14-25, 25-13, 25-21.
