SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10-23-19

Penn Yan tennis repeats as sectional champions
CANANDAIGUA--The number two seeded Penn Yan girls tennis team defeated number one Harley-Allendale Columbia, Monday, Oct. 21 to win a second consecutive tennis sectional title.
Penn Yan won 4-1, with singles players Claire Pullen and Abigail Garvey winning, and both doubles pairs of Sydney Moravec and Jayden Hollister and Sam Denson and Grace Worth recording wins.
Coach Nathan Kraemer said "It was a very close match. Both teams played hard and it felt like it could have gone either way. Penn Yan just seemed to have the edge today. Claire played the best match I've ever seen her play and Abby was unbelievably consistent. Both doubles teams worked well together and took advantage of the opportunities they had to finish points."
Over the weekend, the Mustangs' Molly Pullen and Claire Pullen won the Section V Class B2 doubles championship, Saturday, Oct. 19.
The twins beat Palmyra-Macedon's Katie Smythe and Andra Savage, 6-1, 6-2. This is the pair's third doubles title after winning class CC in 2018 and class B in 2017.
"They are exceptional players who work well together as a doubles team," said Coach Kraemer. "They work hard all year for this. I'm so proud of them and all they've accomplished."
A state qualifier is now scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Boys soccer
The Penn Yan boys varsity soccer team fell to Palmyra-Macedon, Thursday, Oct. 17. The final score was 6-0.
The Mustangs lost to Wayne, Tuesday, Oct. 15. The final score was 5-0.
Girls soccer
The Lady Mustangs varsity soccer team fell to Wayne, Wednesday, Oct. 16. The final score was 2-0.
Football
Penn Yan's varsity football team lost in overtime to Dansville, 42-34, Friday, Oct. 18.
The Mustangs were down 34-6 in the third quarter, but tied on a touchdown with less than a minute on the clock. Coach Timothy McBride said Penn Yan would have won had the team made the two-point conversion to break the tie.
Mekhi Mahan was 20-for-25 passing, with 149 yards. He also earned three touchdowns. Rushing, Mahan had 23 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Damien Snyder rushed for another six yards.
Brennan Prather had 13 receptions for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Snyder added 15 yards receiving, while Kyler Lloyd posted 14 yards.
Prather led the defense with 12 tackles. Mahan had 10 tackles and one onside kick recovery. Andrew Garren also had 10 tackles. Hunter Van Housen posted eight tackles and one fumble recovery. Snyder also had a fumble recovery in the game.
Volleyball
The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team beat Waterloo in four sets, Tuesday, Oct. 15. The final scores were 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.
Serina Sheradin posted 23 assists, four aces, four kills, and four digs. Caitlin Wunder earned 20 kills, two aces, and six digs. Kayla Andersen added four solo blocks and one block assist.
Jammie Decker contributed eight kills, one ace, three blocks, and nine digs. Aysa Crocker earned two aces and eight digs. Onalia Sheradin had one kill and two digs.
With the win, Penn Yan's record is now 9-6 overall.
Cross country
Penn Yan's Joddie Decker placed second at Williamson's Wayne-Finger Lakes league meet, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Decker's second-place finish (20:40) was out of 51 runners. Gracie Murphy followed in 10th (22:54). Jaina Doyle finished 16th (23:56). Jenna Curbeau took 28th (25:59).
For the boys, Ayden Mowry placed seventh (18:49), while James Tette was eighth (18:54). David Young took 10th (19:05). Teagan Fingar was 35th (21:36).

Dundee volleyball team raises money
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity volleyball team lost to Bloomfield in the annual Pink Game, Wednesday, Oct. 16. The final scores were 25-8, 25-17, 25-8.
Makenzie Cratsley had three digs and one ace. Lily Hall posted three digs, three kills, and one ace. Abigail Miller earned two aces.
The Pink Game raises money for the Hope Walk of Yates County, which supports Yates residents living with cancer. This year, the Dundee junior varsity/varsity volleyball teams raised $1,009.45 for the Hope Walk.
Girls soccer
The Lady Scots varsity soccer team fell to Hammondsport/Bradford, Friday, Oct. 18. The final score was 7-2. Cheyenne Cummings and Anna Bratlie scored for Dundee.
Dundee's girls soccer team lost to Marcus Whitman, 6-0, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Cross country
The Scots' Matt Wood won first place at the Williamson cross country meet, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Wood finished with a 17:34 time. Camden Buchanan took 38th (22:00), followed by Logan Buchanan in 44th (23:37). Michael Eaves took 56th (28:49).
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen/Dundee boys soccer team defeated Marcus Whitman, 3-2, in overtime, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Isaac McIlroy scored first, but Marcus Whitman responded with two goals in short succession. Seamus Mooney scored the next goal for the Senecas, right between the goalie's legs. The winning goal in overtime came from McIlroy, assisted by Dylan Morse.
The Senecas topped Newfield, Tuesday, Oct. 15. The final score was 4-2.
McIlroy scored three goals, including one penalty kick. Aidan DiGregorio scored once. In goal, Bryce Kelly had nine saves.

Odessa-Montour swimming defeats Notre Dame
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour girls swim team topped Elmira Notre Dame, 49-43, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Madison Moss won first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:12.90) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:21.57). Kara Reese took first in the 100 yard freestyle (1:02.37) and second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:29.42).
Megan Adams finished first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:15.94). Emilee Chaffinch was second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:41.13). Reagan Reese placed second in the 200 yard individual medley (3:09.84). Annaleise Beckley finished second in the 50 yard freestyle (32.43).
The Indians defeated Whitney Point, 58-22, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Kara Reese was first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:42.39) and first in the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.40). Reagan Reese took first in the 50 yard freestyle (32.23) and first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:33.70).
Moss placed first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:14.07) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:26.42). Adams won the 100 backstroke (1:17.90).
Volleyball
The Indians' varsity volleyball team beat Watkins Glen in four sets, Friday, Oct. 18. The final scores were 25-14, 25-4, 24-26, 25-17.
JoLynn Minnier posted 18 service points, five aces, five kills, two assists, and two blocks. Rhys Stermer earned eight service points, four aces, seven kills, two assists, and four blocks. Cheianne Webster had five service points, one ace, two kills, and two digs. Hannah Chapman added four service points, two aces, and two kills.
Odessa-Montour lost to Thomas Edison, 25-8, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Webster posted six service points, two aces, and three digs. Haley Landon had three service points and three aces, Minnier contributed three service points. Stermer posted two service points, two aces, two kills, six blocks and three digs.
Odessa's volleyball team fell to Campbell-Savona, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19, Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Minnier earned five service points and two digs. Chapman added three service points, one kill, two assists, and five digs. Stermer posted four aces, six kills, and four digs. Sam Sipes contributed four aces, one kill, three assists, and two digs.
Boys soccer
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity soccer team lost to Trumansburg in the final game of the regular season, Thursday, Oct. 17. The final score was 5-0. The Indians had seven shots on goal.

Seneca Indians record 60-0 victory over Port Byron
WATKINS GLEN--The Seneca Indians varsity football team blanked Port Byron, 60-0, on homecoming night for Watkins Glen, Saturday, Oct. 19.
The combined Watkins/Odessa team earned a total of 474 yards on offense, including 86 yards passing. The Seneca Indians kept Port Byron to only 63 yards.
Travon Jones led in rushing with 140 yards, over five carries, to earn two touchdowns. Dominick Fazzary carried 14 times for 98 yards and one touchdown. Owen Scholtisek posted 70 yards on seven caries and one touchdown.
Cameron Holland added 24 yards on two carries. Derrick Lewis carried four times for 23 yards and a touchdown. Gage Arcangeli also added a touchdown on a one-yard carry.
Passing, Holland was 3-for-3 for 86 yards and two touchdowns.
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen/Dundee boys soccer team defeated Marcus Whitman, 3-2, in overtime, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Isaac McIlroy scored first, but Marcus Whitman responded with two goals in short succession. Seamus Mooney scored the next goal for the Senecas, right between the goalie's legs. The winning goal in overtime came from McIlroy, assisted by Dylan Morse.
"In the first 30 seconds of OT, Watkins Glen played the ball without the other team touching it right to the goal," said Coach Nils Watson. "Great hustle from the Senecas drove the win."
The Senecas topped Newfield, Tuesday, Oct. 15. The final score was 4-2.
McIlroy scored three goals, including one penalty kick. Aidan DiGregorio scored once. In goal, Bryce Kelly had nine saves.
Volleyball
The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team lost to Odessa-Montour in four sets, Friday, Oct. 18. The final scores were 25-14, 25-4, 26-24, 25-17.
Cross country
The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team claimed second at the Marathon Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 19.
Gabe Planty took second overall (16:55.7). Sam Thorsland took 12th (18:06.1), while Max Evans was 17th (18:19.6). Benjamin Swinnerton placed 23rd (18:46.8). Steven Gublo was 34th (19:10.2).
For the girls, Breanna Carl placed 15th (22:45.3) as the only female runner for WG.
Girls swimming
The Senecas' girls varsity swim team beat Waverly, 108-73, Thursday, Oct. 17.
Amanda Wilbur won first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:12.69) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:50.57). Thalia Marquez placed first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:33.26) and first in the 100 yard freestyle (59.30).
Peighton Cervoni finished first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.30) and first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.83). Maria Brubaker took first in diving, while Sarah Swinnerton placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:16.81).

Lakers move to 16-1 with win
HAMMONDSPORT--The Hammondsport girls volleyball team improved to 16-1 on the season defeating LeRoy in five sets, Friday, Oct. 18. The final scores were, 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-23.
Julia Bennett led with 18 kills. Erika Hilligus earned 13 kills, while Vittoria Cateni and Angela Gonzo had 10 and nine kills respectively. Brianna Pratt had 55 setter assists.
"We struggled to find our strength serving tonight resulting in too many points given to LeRoy which cost us our first two sets," said Coach Erika Webster. "The girls battled back and played the best they've played all season. It was a match that will help us to further prepare for sectionals as we look to improve beyond our level of play tonight."
The Lakers topped Wellsville, 24-26, 25-14, 25-14, 25-20, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
At the service line Cateni and Gonzo led with seven and six aces respectively. Bennett put down 13 kills, while Hilligus had six.
Cross country
The Hammondsport boys varsity cross country team took fourth at the Clarence Fall Classic, Saturday, Oct. 19.
Thomas Kressly placed sixth (17:06.9). Liam Kressly took 19th (17:57.9). George Drake finished 32nd (18:44.4). Mike Beam was 44th (19:23.3). Matt Lyle finished in 52nd (19:51.8).
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport/Bradford girls soccer team beat Dundee, 7-2, Friday, Oct. 18.
Hannah Hoerter, Alivia Phenes, and Danielle Conley each scored two goals. Madison Wright scored once. Hoerter, Phenes, and Kirsta Sleeve each assisted once. In the goal, Rorie Whitcomb had eight saves.
The combined soccer team blanked Lima Christian, 1-0, Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Phenes scored the game's sole goal. Whitcomb posted seven saves in goal.
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team tied Campbell-Savona, Thursday, Oct. 17. The final score was 2-2.
The Lakers attempted 34 shots on goal, with four corner kicks. In goal, Hammondsport had 16 saves. Nevin Davis scored both goals.
Hammondsport's boys team lost to Canisteo-Greenwood, 3-0, Tuesday, Oct. 15. The Lakers had eight shots on goal, with 25 saves.
