SPORTS RECAP: Week of 11-6-19

Lakers win opener
PRATTSBURGH--The number one seeded Hammondsport varsity volleyball team topped Houghton Academy in the Section V Class D3 quarterfinals, Saturday, Nov. 2. The final scores were 25-16, 25-17, 25-20.
Brianna Pratt and Vittoria Cateni led at the service line with five and four aces respectively. Julia Bennett dominated at the net with 10 kills. Pratt also earned 24 setter assists.
Cross Country
Hammondsport competed at the Section V Cross Country Championships at Midlakes High School. Thomas Kressly was second (17:14.7). Liam Kressly took seventh with 17:47.4. George Drake was 12th (18:37.6).

Penn Yan Mustangs advance to volleyball semifinal
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity volleyball team defeated Waterloo in five sets in the Section V Class C1 quarterfinals, Saturday, Nov. 2. The final scores were 25-21, 27-25, 20-25, 13-25, 25-14.
Caitlin Wunder posted 34 kills, one ace, and 12 digs. Serina Sheradin added 40 assists, seven aces, three kills, and 13 digs.
Jammie Decker contributed eight kills, five aces, one block, and seven digs. Aysa Crocker had 18 digs and two aces.
With the win, the Mustangs' record is 11-8. Penn Yan is scheduled to face North Rose-Wolcott on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the semifinals.
Cross country
The Penn Yan boys and girls varsity cross country teams placed seventh and 11th respectively at the Section V Class C championship.
For the boys, James Tette was ninth (18:08.1). Ayden Mowry took 14th (18:24.8), followed by David Young in 27th (18:54.4). Teagan Fingar placed 93rd (21:38.2). Zachary Smith took 101st (22:09.4).
Joddie Decker led in second (19:58.2) individually. Jaina Doyle placed 26th (23:19.5). Jenna Curbeau took 67th (26:14.3), while Abigail Bodine was 71st (26:24.3). Adriana Rodriguez finished 83rd (27:55.8).
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team was recognized as the Finger Lakes West division Champion with 10-1 record season, Thursday, Oct. 31.
Three Mustang athletes were named to the Finger Lakes West All-Stars team: Molly Pullen in first singles, Claire Pullen in second singles, and Abigail Garvey in third singles.
Honorable mentions were given to Sam Denson and Jayden Hollister as first doubles and Sydney Moravec and Grace Worth as second doubles.

Dundee football faces Pembroke
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity football team fell to Pembroke, Saturday, Nov. 2. The final score was 44-14.
Brady Richardson was 3-for-9 passing for 22 yards. He also carried for five yards.
Kaden Labar led in rushing with 193 yards over 37 carries. Kenneth Empson Jr. and Tate Hoyt both posted 15 yards. Nick Slavick had five carries for 10 yards. Slavick also caught three passes for 22 yards.
Richardson and Tate Hoyt both had touchdowns for Dundee.
Cross country
Dundee competed in the Section V Class D championship, Saturday, Nov. 2.
Matt Wood led in fifth (17:42.6). Gabe Dillon took 45th (21:26.9). Camden Buchanan was 54th (22:15.8), while Michael Eaves was 72nd (27:24.2).

Watkins cross country wins IAC
MARATHON--The Senecas' boys varsity cross country team was first at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) championship, Friday, Nov. 1.
Gabe Planty took second (17:26.20). Sam Thorsland placed fifth (18:02.6). Max Evans followed in 12th (18:28.8). Benjamin Swinnerton was 17th (18:49.0). Steven Gublo finished in 21st (19:11.5). Elliott Holland was 49th (20:27.2), while Tim Clifford took 92nd (25:58.6).
Breanna Carl finished 10th (21:53.6) as the Senecas' sole female participant.
Football
The post-season playoffs came to an end for the Seneca Indians varsity football team who faced Class C's number one state-ranked Susquehanna Valley and lost, 46-6, Saturday, Nov. 2. The combined Watkins/Odessa team faced the Sabers in the first round of Class C Sectionals.
"Sus. Valley is a very physical team that executes their plays well, and they put their opponents in difficult situations which in turn throw you off your game plan," said Coach Trevor Holland. "I am most impressed with the amount of effort our Seneca-Indian players put forth in all four quarters of the game, even in the closing moments. Winning the playoff game is obviously the goal, but getting there is never an easy road. Making the playoffs two years in a row is an accomplishment that we need to build off of looking towards the 2020 season, then after that, it's win."
Offensively, the Seneca Indians earned 97 yards rushing and 90 yards passing. Travon Jones posted 10 carries for 60 yards and one touchdown reception. Alex Kranyik added 20 yards over five carries. Owen Scholtisek had seven carries for 13 yards, while Derrick Lewis also rushed four times for 13 yards. Cameron Holland was 10-for-16 passing for 90 yards, with one touchdown pass and one interception..
