SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-12-20

Penn Yan girls top Mynderse; wrestlers advance
The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team topped Mynderse, 52-24, Saturday, Feb. 8.
Leading the Mustangs was Joddie Decker with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Ashley Sisson posted 12 points and eight rebounds. Jammie Decker had nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Sierra Harrison added five points, while Hayley Andersen had four points and six rebounds. Kaley Griffin scored three points. Jenna Curbeau contributed two points and 10 rebounds.
Penn Yan lost to Waterloo, Wednesday, Feb. 5. The final score was 57-27. Individual stats were not reported.
Boys basketball
The Mustangs' boys varsity basketball team lost to Mynderse in an away game, Saturday, Feb. 8. The final score was 73-61.
Mason Kuver scored 16 points. Kyle Berna posted 12 points. Justice Jones and Peter Nicholson both added nine points. Griffin Emerson and Devon Gerhardt each posted six points. Brennan Prather had three points.
Penn Yan fell to Waterloo, 58-41, Tuesday, Feb. 8.
Jones led with 14 points. Prather added 12 points, followed by Emerson with five points. Gerhardt and David DeSorbo each posted three points. Dominic Lafferty scored two points.
Bowling
The Penn Yan boys and girls varsity bowling teams both beat Dundee, 5-0, Thursday, Feb. 6.
Cameron Bassage led with a 683. Trevor Harris had a 597, followed by Ben Broome with a 579. Jon Mashewske added a 504.
For the girls, Andy Kniffin posted a 564. McKelvie Jensen added a 534. Anella Tillman posted a 478. Aysa Crocker earned a 442.
The boys beat Marcus Whitman, 4-1, Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Harris earned a 618. Bassage bowled a 607. Harmon posted a 558, followed by Mashewske with a 555.
The girls lost 5-0. Tillman led with a 572. Kniffin had a 569. Brandee Ellis posted a 493, while Jensen had a 466.
Wrestling
The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan varsity wrestling team took sixth at the Section V Cass B1 championships, Saturday, Feb. 8.
Justin Smith (160) was first in the championship round, winning by major decision, 9-1, against Joshua Armstrong. Ayden Mowry (120) took second after being pinned by Anthony Noto in the first period. Mason Petersen (220) was third by beating Jonah Pullen 2-1 in the consolation final.
Also placing in the tournament was Colton Yerkes (195) who finished fourth, while Alec Benson (195) took fifth. David Young (106), Chad Smith (152), and Austin Smith (182) all were sixth.

Lakers girls, boys win
The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team defeated Friendship, Monday, Feb. 3.
Hannah Hoerter led with 14 points. Jillian Underhill and Vittoria Cateni both scored six points. Rorie Whitcomb earned five points. Samantha Welch added four points, while Destiny Hammond had three. Lydia Dluzak posted two points.
Boys basketball
The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team topped Andover, 102-24, Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Thomas Kressly scored 27 points to lead the Lakers. Zak Davis posted 25 points, followed by Michael Beam with 24. Johnathon Wells earned nine points and Ian MacDonald added eight. Chris Becker scored five points, while C.J. Hill had four points.
The Lakers defeated Friendship, 96-34, Monday, Feb. 3.
Becker scored 25 points. Kressly contributed 18 points, while Hill posted 15 points. Davis added 14 points and Beam netted 12.

Dundee bowlers face Penn Yan; basketball wins
Dundee's varsity bowling teams both lost, 5-0, to Penn Yan, Thursday, Feb. 6.
For the boys, Stephen Smith posted a 539. Austin States added a 402. Bryan Merrill bowled a 392, while Aaron Ayers had a 353.
Cassie Morrissette led the girls with a 459. Cheyenne Cummings added a 441. Claudya Lyons posted a 402.
Girls basketball
The Lady Scots varsity basketball team defeated Bloomfield, 42-36, Wednesday, Feb. 5.
"Throughout the game, the lead changed hands multiple times but Dundee was able to pull away in the end," said Coach Michael Strait.
Makenzie Cratsley scored 10 points, with nine rebounds, while Hallie Knapp also had 10 points and seven rebounds. Mackenzie Strait earned eight points, four rebounds, and four steals. Kendall Parker had five points and seven steals. Savannah Eaves posted four points, followed by Anna Bratlie with three points and six rebounds.
The Lady Scots move to 11-6 on the season.
Boys basketball
The Dundee varsity basketball team defeated Romulus, 61-53, Monday, Feb. 10.
Steven Webster had 20 points and nine rebounds. Logan Salvatore recorded 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. John Bell had eight points and three steals. Blake Machuga added seven points, four rebounds and three assists. Peyton Boudinot had five points.
Dundee's boys were beaten by Bloomfield, Tuesday, Feb. 4. The final score was 58-37. No individual statistics were available.
Wrestling
The Dundee varsity wrestling team competed at the Section V Class B3 Wrestling Championships, Saturday, Feb. 8.
Kenneth Empson (195) and Travis Bailey (285) both were third after winning their consolation final bout. Tate Hoyt (220) finished fifth with a win in his final match, while Michael Eaves (106) was sixth with a loss.

Odessa-Montour boys fall, girls beat Tioga
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity basketball team lost to Tioga, 50-43, Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Paden Grover paced the Indians with 13 points. Derrick Lewis had nine points.
Girls basketball
The Indians' girls varsity basketball team topped Tioga, 60-53, Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Sara Gardner scored 25 points, including seven three-pointers with 20 points in the second half. Kara Reese earned 13 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Autumn Garrison added 11 points, while Grace Vondracek had nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Hannah Nolan contributed two points.
With the win, Odessa's record is now 11-6.
Boys swimming
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team lost a close meet to Lansing, 86-84, Thursday, Feb. 6.
"We needed to take first and second in the last relay to secure the win," said Coach Terri Brace. "Our best chance to do this was to split the relays (attempt to even them out so one team was not substantially faster than the other). Unfortunately, the play was not successful, and we ended up going 1-3, and coming up two points short."
The medley relay team (Nick DeLong, Caleb Thomas, Jake Mayette, and Brett Walters) finished first with 1:56.82. The 400 freestyle relay team (Mayette, Micah Brewster, Jon Spencer, and Noah Hollenbeck) were first in 4:01.63.
Walters won first in the 200 individual medley (2:25.87) and second in the 100 freestyle (54.95). Brock Sgrecci was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.39).
Mayette finished second in the 50 freestyle (25.20) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.7). Brewster took second in the 200 freestyle (2:14.14). DeLong placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:11.32).
Wrestling
The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team competed at the Section IV Division 2 qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 8.
Joshua Beckley placed fourth in the 182 weight class and advances to the Sectional tournament at the Broome County Arena next Saturday, Feb. 15.
Kadin Burnham (120), Tristan Harington (220), and Joe Sweet (285) each placed sixth in their respective weight classes.
Top five finishers in each weight class move on to next week's Sectional competition, however, the sixth-place finishers serve as alternates should a top-five wrestler not be able to participate.

Watkins Glen girls fall to Newark Valley; boys win
The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team lost to Newark Valley, 41-33, Saturday, Feb. 8.
Kelsey Kernan posted nine points and eight rebounds, while Adrienna Solomon also had nine points and seven rebounds. Aislinn Klemann added six points, followed by Jenna Solomon with four points and five rebounds. Abigail Gibson added three points and six rebounds.
Boys basketball
The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team beat Waverly in an away game, Tuesday, Feb. 4. The final score was 48-43. Isaac McIlroy had 23 points. Adam Pastore and Owen Scholtisek both recorded eight points.
Cheerleading
The Watkins Glen varsity cheerleading team took first in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship Co-Ed Division, Saturday, Feb. 8.
Overall, the Senecas took second and were presented with the Spirit Award.
Watkins secured a spot at the Section IV Championship to be held at Union-Endicott on Feb. 22.
Boys swimming
The Watkins Glen boys varsity swim team lost to Elmira, 86-62, Thursday, Feb. 6.
Jordan Avery was first in the 50 freestyle (26.36) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:05.07). Liam Smith took second in the 200 individual medley (2:41.87) and second in the 500 freestyle (6:14.52).
Scott Brubaker finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:24.54). Lane Roy was second in the 100 backstroke (1:18:82). Owen Bingham took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.08).
The Senecas' swim team lost to Waverly, 72-66, Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Roy finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:19.30) and second in the 100 freestyle (1:11.16). Anthony Cummings placed first in the 100 freestyle (1:09.37). Brubaker took first in the 500 freestyle (6:44.84). Ben Swinnerton was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.26).
Smith was second in the 200 individual medley (2:39.19). Gaetono Williams took second in the 100 backstroke (2:26.88). Bingham was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.09).
Bowling
The Watkins Glen boys and girls varsity bowling teams both lost to Waverly, 4-0, Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Matt Irwin led the boys with a 580. R.J. Bannon posted a 519, followed by Caleb Smith with a 487. Mykal Cody earned a 458. Michael Cook posted a 455.
For the girls, Ava Cowan earned a 516. Alyiah Clink-Bentley bowled a 412. Brooke Usher added a 393. Makenzie Kellogg posted a 355, while Aubrey Kellogg added a 341.
Indoor track
Watkins had two athletes compete in the weight throw meet, Sunday, Feb. 9, held at Cornell University.
Collin Gaylord earned a new personal record in the weight throw (33'9.75"), previously held by Boyd Barber. Gaylord's record was short-lived as Barber himself set a new school and personal record in the weight throw at 36' 7.5".
