SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-19-20

Dundee boys win two games; Wood moves to states
The Dundee boys varsity basketball team topped Naples, 65-36, on senior night, Thursday, Feb. 13.
Cody Salamendra scored a career-high 20 points, with five rebounds and six assists. Steven Webster recorded 16 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks, and three steals. Josh Cramer scored eight points and had five rebounds. John Bell, Blake Machuga, and Logan Salvatore all added five points with Machuga and Salvatore each adding six rebounds.
The Scots defeated Romulus, Monday, Feb. 10. The final score was 61-53.
Logan Salvatore led with 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Bell posted eight points and three steals. Machuga added seven points, four rebounds, and three assists. Peyton Boudinot had five points.
Girls basketball
The Lady Scots varsity basketball team fell to Marcus Whitman, Tuesday, Feb. 11. The final score was 50-37.
Mackenzie Strait scored 15 points and had three steals. Kendall Parker posted nine points and three steals. Makenzie Cratsley added five points, five rebounds, and four steals. Hallie Knapp netted four points, with three rebounds. Alexandria Wood and Trisha Edmister both scored two points.
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity indoor track team competed at the Section IV State Qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 15. Two athletes from the team qualified to advance.
Dundee's Matt Wood took first in the 1600 meter run, with a personal record and new Dundee school record of 4:32.64. Watkins' Gabe Planty was first in the 3200 meter run with a 9:39.5 time. The two will compete at the state meet on Staten Island, March 7.
Lily Hall finished fifth in the girls triple jump (35'1.25").

Penn Yan bowler reaches state tournament; girls win
The Penn Yan girls varsity bowling team finished second in the Section V Class C Championship, last weekend.
Andy Kniffin rolled a 1305 series with a high game of 277. She earned the Class C High Series award for her performance over six games and qualified for the state tournament with the composite All-Section team in Syracuse, March 14. Kniffin was also named to the All-Section V Tournament Team.
Anella Tillman was presented with the second-highest game award in Class C with a 236 game.
Girls basketball
The Lady Mustangs varsity basketball team defeated Wayne, 59-30, Friday, Feb. 14.
Sierra Harrison led with 13 points. Joddie Decker netted 10 points, with 10 assists and seven rebounds. Kaley Griffin posted nine points and six rebounds, while Jenna Curbeau and Ashley Sisson both scored eight points. Curbeau also had 10 rebounds. Jammie Decker earned six points. Hayley Andersen added five points.
Boys basketball
The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team lost to Wayne, 69-49, Friday, Feb. 14.
Griffin Emerson led with 13 points. David DeSorbo netted 11 points. Devon Gerhardt added eight points, while Brennan Prather had seven points. Kyle Berna scored six. Phil Trofibio and Mason Kuver each had two points.
The Mustangs beat World of Inquiry, 51-38, Monday, Feb. 10.
Berna led with 16 points. Kuver had 12 points, followed by Prather with 11 points. Emerson and DeSorbo both netted three points. Eric Fingar, Nicholson, and Justice Jones each had two points.
Wrestling
The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan varsity wrestling team competed in the Section V Division II Championship and state qualifier, Friday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, Feb. 15.
Justin Smith (160) finished second with a major decision (13-4) loss to Andrew Englerth in the finals. Ayden Mowry (120) and Mason Petersen (220) both finished fifth in the consolation round with victories. Mowry beat Beau Zeh, 6-4 and Petersen defeated Alexander Lockwood, 4-0.

Lakers fall to Avoca, 84-33
The Lakers' boys varsity basketball team suffered a loss to Avoca, 84-33, Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Hammondsport had the lead in the first quarter but fell behind by halftime. C.J. Hill scored nine points.
The Lakers topped the Houghton Academy Panthers, Monday, Feb. 10. The final score was 58-53.
Both teams were tied at the end of the third quarter, 39-39. Ian MacDonald led with 17 points, while Hill posted 14 points.
Girls basketball
The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team beat Prattsburgh/Avoca, Thursday, Feb. 13. The final score was 50-38. Individual statistics were not provided.
The Lakers also beat Addison, 66-56, Tuesday, Feb. 11. Hannah Hoerter and Destiny Hammond each had 19 points. Rorie Whitcomb recorded 15 and Jillian Underhill eight points. Maddie Sprague added five points in the game.

Watkins boys win; Planty will compete at states
The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team beat Elmira Notre Dame, Tuesday, Feb. 11. The final score was 48-33.
Adam Pastore, Owen Scholtisek and Mitchell Pike each had nine points in the game.
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity indoor track team competed at the Section IV State Qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 15, with two athletes qualifying to advance.

Lily Hall finished fifth in the triple jump (35'1.25"). Ryleigh Clark was sixth in the triple jump (33'8.25"). Nick Wilston placed seventh in the long jump (18'7.25") and eighth in the triple jump (39'7"). Breanna Carl took ninth in the 1500 meter race walk (9:25.3).
Madelyn Suddaby was 14th in the triple jump (30"3'). Boyd Barber took 15th in the weight throw (33'6").
Girls basketball
The Senecas' girls varsity basketball team fell to Waverly, 62-40, Thursday, Feb. 13.
Aislinn Klemann led with eight points, including a pair of three-point shots and five rebounds. Adrienna Solomon earned seven points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Kelsey Kernan, Amanda Wilbur, and Ali LaMoreaux each scored six points. Kernan also had nine rebounds, while Wilbur had five. Abigail Gibson, Natalie Edmister, and Mattie Yontz each posted two points.
Watkins' girls defeated Notre Dame, 50-42, Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Klemann scored 17 points, with two three-point shots and seven rebounds. Kernan added 14 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Carly Arnold posted nine points and five rebounds. Solomon netted seven points, with nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jenna Solomon had two points.
Boys swimming
The Senecas' boys varsity swim team placed fifth at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship, Saturday, Feb. 15
The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Daine Butler, Ben Swinnerton, Scott Brubaker, and Jordan Avery) took fifth with a time of 1:49.36. The 400 yard freestyle relay team (Liam Smith, Lane Roy, Anthony Cummings, and Owen Bingham) was fifth in 4:36.42. The 200 yard medley relay team (Avery, Swinnerton, Brubaker, and Butler) finished in fifth with 2:07.53.
Smith finished eighth in the 500 yard freestyle (6:07.52) and 10th in the 200 yard individual medley (2:38.47). Butler placed ninth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:18.61) and 10th in the 100 yard freestyle (59.73). Swinnerton was 10th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:19.24).

Odessa-Montour girls basketball splits pair
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team was beaten by Newfield, Tuesday, Feb. 11. The final score was 54-30. Hannah Nolan led with nine points.
The Indians defeated Candor, 48-43, Monday, Feb. 10.
Odessa led throughout the entire game, but Candor cut it down to 44-43 with 1:05 left in the game. Coach Greg Gavich said, "Kara Reese made a clutch driving layup to put us up three with 32.9 seconds left, then Sara Gardner finished it off with a fast-break layup with 12 seconds to go."
Gardner led with 15 points. Reese posted 12 points, eight rebounds, six steals, and five assists. JoLynn Minnier contributed 11 points and 14 rebounds. Autumn Garrison netted five points, while Mallory Rhodes had three points and Hannah Nolan posted two points.
Boys basketball
Odessa's boys varsity basketball team was beaten by Lansing in a close game, Thursday, Feb. 13. The final score was 49-47.
Paden Grover scored 14 points, Ben Mathews had 13.
Boys swimming
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team placed fourth at the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) Championship, Saturday, Feb. 15.
The 400 free relay team (Jake Mayette, Jon Spencer, Micah Brewster, and Brett Walters) was second in 3:40.15. The 200 free relay team (Mayette, Nick DeLong, Brewster, and Walters) placed third in 1:39.58. The 200 medley relay team (Justin Roucco, Caleb Thomas, Spencer, and DeLong) was fourth with 2:01.45.
Mayette finished third in the 100 fly (1:01.39) and sixth in the 50 free (24.81). Thomas took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.60). Brock Sgrecci was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.00).
Walters placed fourth in the 100 back (1:03.96) and sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:22.17). Brewster was seventh in the 500 free (6:05.97) and eighth in the 200 free (2:07.73). DeLong was seventh in the 100 backstroke (1:09.79). Caleb Reynolds finished eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:10.24).
Wrestling
Wrestler Joshua Beckley (182) competed at the Section IV Division 2 championship and state qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 15.
Beckley won against Mason Pratt of Owego Free Academy before losing to Gabriel Monroe of Windsor in the quarter-finals. He concluded his season in the wrestlebacks at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton with a loss to Evan Ticknor of Marathon.
