New York will test for infection rate

YATES COUNTY--As New York state has seen a reduction in the number of deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state have announced a number changes to both the essential businesses as well as testing moving forward under the statewide "pause."
Last week, the governor updated the pause period to extend until at least May 15 for schools and nonessential businesses. New executive orders also now require New Yorkers to wear masks or face coverings in public when social distancing cannot be maintained.
The Empire State Development organization updated a number of their guidance rules for essential businesses, allowing marinas and boat launches to operate as well as golf courses under limited circumstances.
Also this week, the state has begun conducting a 3,000-person antibody test to determine the percentage of the population that is now thought to be immune to the virus. The data can be used to make projections statewide about infection rates.
As of press time, there are 16 total positive tests in Yates County. Five have recovered, two are hospitalized and one has died. 190 have tested negative and 57 are in isolation or quarantine.
Schuyler County has had nine total positive tests but also nine recovered. There are zero hospitalizations and 233 have tested negative with 13 in isolation or quarantine.
Steuben County has continued to lead the local number of cases with 196. 96 have recovered, seven are hospitalized and 27 have died. There are 300 in isolation or quarantine.
On Monday, April 20, the New York State Department of Labor launched a new application for New Yorkers to apply for traditional unemployment insurance or the new COVID-19 pandemic unemployment assistance. Visit labor.ny.gov or call 888-209-8124 to signup.
