Association launches new lake program

SENECA LAKE-The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association announced an initiative to make protecting Seneca Lake easy for those who depend on it most.

Lake Friendly Living launched Friday, May 22, and is available to households and businesses throughout the Seneca Lake watershed, which stretches from Chemung County north to Ontario County.
"We are proud to announce this much-needed program," said Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association President Jacob Welch. "With our over 700 members and 200 active volunteers, this is one more way to engage residents who live in the watershed to help protect Seneca Lake for years to come."
Lake Friendly Living encourages those who live in the Seneca Lake watershed to take a pledge to reduce the impacts of runoff and pollutants on the lake--a freshwater resource for more than 100,000 people. Households that take the pledge will help to keep excess nutrients and sediment from entering the lake, discouraging the growth of harmful algal blooms and other threats to water quality.
The pledge includes basic practices, such as disposing of hazardous wastes properly, maintaining septic systems, and committing to less harmful lawn care practices.
"Our program is designed to be simple and easy to utilize with many resources available online and in print," said Maura Toole, a volunteer with Pure Waters and Program Leader. "We also plan to offer workshops and other community events to help engage watershed residents."
Residents and businesses can register their pledge and receive recognition on the newly designed Lake Friendly Living website, full of printable materials and links to more resources. Lake Friendly Living signs and decals will also be available for pledges to proudly display in their yards or on their windows.
Pledges who are interested in advanced landscaping and gardening projects can move on to become Lake Stewards. Lake Steward practices include installing a rain barrel, creating rain gardens that capture and filter pollutants, and developing natural erosion buffers using native vegetation.
The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association is also working with other lake associations, including Canandaigua, Keuka, and Cayuga to expand the Lake Friendly Living program to help support the entire Finger Lakes water quality.
