WATKINS GLEN--While Watkins Glen International was once again named 'Best NASCAR Track' by USA TODAY Readers' Choice survey, the track announced last week, one of their only remaining races this year, Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, will be realigned.
The COVID-19 global pandemic has affected many industries, however, entertainment such as racing has had to make major schedule and planning changes due to limitations on crowd gatherings and recently around travel restrictions.
On Saturday, Aug. 1, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) announced schedule shifts after WGI made their initial update. "Today [we] announced realignment to upcoming dates on [the] 2020 schedule, which includes shifting of the Labor Day Weekend six-hour race from Watkins Glen International to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, and the GT-only event from Lime Rock Park to the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL," IMSA said in a statement. "IMSA continues to monitor state and local COVID-19 guidelines which may make additional schedule revisions appropriate in the coming weeks."
Currently, New York has joined with New Jersey and Connecticut in jointly issuing a travel advisory for anyone returning from travel to states that have a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19. Prior to the planned race in Watkins Glen on Labor Day weekend, IMSA would have been at Virginia International Raceway, however, Virginia is one of the states along with 34 others New York currently restricts travel activity.
According to the state, "If you have traveled from within one of the designated states with significant community spread, you must quarantine when you enter New York for 14 days from the last travel within such designated state, provided on the date you enter into New York State that such state met the criteria for requiring such quarantine."
There is an exemption to the advisory for individuals "passing through" for less than 24 hours "through the course of travel."
WGI said fans who held tickets for the IMSA event will automatically receive a credit for the full amount paid plus an additional 20 percent of total amount paid to apply towards a different future event at any NASCAR-owned track or Watkins Glen International, including, but not limited to, grandstand seating, infield, camping, fan hospitality and pit passes. The credit can be used in a single transaction during the remainder of the 2020 season and entire 2021 season at any of the aforementioned venues, subject to availability. Credits will automatically be applied to WGI ticket accounts the week of Aug. 3. Fans may opt for a refund if preferred. Watkins Glen has now won USA TODAY's 'Best NASCAR Track' poll for the fourth time in six years. NASCAR previously realigned their 2020 racing event at The Glen due to COVID restrictions.
"Obviously, all of the credit goes to the amazing fans of Watkins Glen International," WGI President Michael Printup said. "We have the best fans in motorsports who made sure that The Glen came out on top, sharing their racing passion and memorable experiences across social media. We'd also like to thank our elected officials for their constant support, namely Senator Tom O'Mara and Assemblyman Phil Palmesano, who are instrumental in helping The Glen be the best."
