SPORTS RECAP: Week of 4-7-21
Penn Yan/Dundee Football The Penn Yan and Dundee combined football team defeated Mynderse on a cold, windy and at times in blizzard-like conditions, Thursday, April 1. The final score was 20-0. Quarterback Carter Earl was 7-for-9 passing with 59 yards and a touchdown. Mekhi Mahan also threw a pass for three yards to score a two-point conversion. Mahan carried the team on the ground with 17 attempts for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers Kyler Lloyd and Damien Snyder recorded three receptions for 11 yards and a two-point conversion and one reception for 25 yards and a touchdown, respectively. Kenny Empson Jr. led with a team-high eight tackles. Mahan added seven, while Jon Mashewske had six tackles. Alex Foster recorded one sack and five tackles. Snyder contributed two tackles and two fumble recoveries. Lloyd also had a sack and a tackle in the game. The football team now plays Haverling, Wednesday, April 7.
Dundee Volleyball The Dundee volleyball team beat Mynderse Academy but lost to Campbell-Savona and Bloomfield last week. Against Mynderse, Tuesday, March 30, the game scores were 24-26, 27-25, 25-12, 25-23. Makenzie Cratsley had one kill, six aces and six digs. Lily Hall recorded six assists, five aces and one dig. Tianna Strickland added five kills and 14 digs, while Hailey Strickland had three kills, five aces and 23 digs. Dundee lost to Campbell 12-25, 15-25 and 12-25, Monday, March 29. Hailey Strickland had one kill, two aces, one block and one dig. Abby Miller recorded three kills, one assist and one block. Savannah Eaves had two digs. The Lady Scots fell to an undefeated Bloomfield team, Thursday, April 1. The game scores were 17-25, 5-25 and 12-25. Miller contributed one kill and two digs in the game. Hall added one kill, two assists and one ace, while Hailey Strickland had six digs.
Penn Yan Volleyball The Penn Yan volleyball team defeated Geneva and Midlakes last week. The Mustangs topped Geneva 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, Wednesday, March 31. The girls also beat Midlakes in five games, Monday, March 29. The scores were 22-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22. Jammie Decker had five aces, 13 kills, five assists and eight digs in the match. Clarissa Enos contributed three aces, one assist and one dig. Lauren Schilling had three aces and five digs, while Brenna Hathway added one assist and four digs.
Hammondsport Volleyball The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team fell to Campbell-Savona, Saturday, April 3. The game scores were 14-25, 23-25 and 12-25. Individual stats were not provided for the game.
Odessa-Montour Girls Soccer The Odessa-Montour girls varsity soccer team defeated Newfield 4-0, Saturday, April 3. Hannah Nolan had two goals and one assist in the game. Camille Sgrecci added one goal. Lilly Betts also scored for Odessa. Tori Brewster assisted twice in the game, while Autumn Garrison had one assist. Coach Burton Brewster said, "Newfield played hard but had limited numbers. Odessa-Montour's depth was an advantage. We passed the ball well and created good chances." Keyonna Garrison had one save in goal, while Eliza Starkweather had three. The girls also defeated Newfield 5-1, Monday, March 29. Nolan scored four times and Betts once.
Odessa-Montour Boys Soccer The Odessa-Montour boys soccer team lost to Newark Valley, 2-0, Tuesday, March 30.
Odessa-Montour Volleyball The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team lost to Newfield, 3-1, Wednesday, March 31. Madisyn Wells had 11 service points, three aces, three kills and three digs. Haley Landon recorded seven service points, four aces and four assists. Samantha Sipes added six service points, three aces and one dig. Hali Daugherty contributed four service points and one ace. The girls also lost to Candor 3-0, Monday, March 29. Jessica Carnes had five service points, one kill and two digs. Landon added two service points, two aces and two assists.
Seneca Indians Football The Seneca Indians powered through what coach Trevor Holland called a fight to the end, coming back from a 14-7 deficit at half to win 28-14, Friday, April 2. Owen Scholtisek had two touchdowns in the game with 11 carries for 99 yards and two receptions for 19 yards. Travon Jones recorded 10 carries for 72 yards and three receptions for 30 yards. Dominick Fazzary also had a touchdown with 15 runs for 139 yards. Cameron Holland was 6-for-13 passing with 50 yards and had a rushing touchdown. Anthony Ricauter-Minelli, Cayden Confer, Scholtisek and Fazzary each had four tackles on defense.
Watkins Glen Boys Soccer The Watkins Glen boys soccer team lost to Newark Valley, Thursday, April 1. The final score was 4-2. Stoyan Bond recorded both goals for Watkins. The boys also lost to Waverly, 2-0, Tuesday, March 30.
Girls Swimming The Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour swimming team recorded two wins last week against Elmira and Notre Dame. The team beat Notre Dame 101-84. Recording first place finishes were: Emily Melveney (200 free), Amanda Wilbur (200 IM and 100 butterfly), Faye Mooney (50 free and 100 breaststroke) and Kendra Fish (100 free). The 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams were also first. The teams included Fish, Mooney, Wilbur and Melveney. The girls defeated Notre Dame, 80-62. First place wins were recorded by: Wilbur (200 IM and 500 free), Megan Adams (100 butterfly) and Mooney (100 free). The 200 medley relay team of Fish, Mooney, Wilbur and Melveney was first in 2:10.05.
Watkins Glen Volleyball The Watkins Glen varsity volleyball team fell to Waverly, 3-1, Thursday, April 1. The girls also lost to Edison, 3-0, Tuesday, March 30. Individual stats were not provided for either game..
