SPORTS RECAP: Week of 6-23-21
Penn Yan Lacrosse In the Section V Class D championship lacrosse game, Penn Yan faced third-seeded Palmyra-Macedon and won 16-2 to take their 25th sectional title in program history. The Mustangs consistently scored in the game with three goals in the first quarter, five in the second, four in the third and four in the fourth. Pal-Mac had their first goal in the first quarter and their second in the third. Penn Yan's defense and offensive pressure allowed them to largely control the game pace, while goalie Griffin Emerson's 80 percent stop rate effectively shut down the Red Raiders. Scoring for the Mustangs were: Max Brodmann with five goals and one assist and Ayden Mowry contributing four goals and one assist. Devon Gerhardt added three goals and one assist, while Carter Earl had two goals and one assist. Mekhi Mahan and Teagen Fingar both had one goal and Tyler Griffin and Kyler Lloyd each added an assist. Emerson made eight saves in the goal. At the conclusion of the game, Brodmann was named the Class D tournament MVP. Mowry was selected as an All-American, Wednesday, June 16 and Griffin earned the All-Academic title.
Penn Yan Baseball The fifth-seeded Penn Yan baseball team lost to number two Wellsville in the Section V Class B2 finals, Tuesday, June 15. The final score was 10-2. Wellsville jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning and also scored four runs in the fifth with nine hits in the game. Penn Yan had five.
Hammondsport Softball The Hammondsport softball team lost to Keshequa in the Section V Class D1 finale, Monday, June 14. The score was 5-1. Destiny Hammond had two doubles and Hannah Hoerter had a triple in the championship game. Hammondsport finished the season as the county champions and had a 12-4 record. This was the first time the team had reached the sectional finals.
