SCHUYLER COUNTY--Sheriff-Elect Kevin Rumsey held a press conference Monday, Nov. 22 where he announced Deputy Andrew Zeigler will serve as undersheriff when Rumsey takes over Saturday, Jan. 1. A 28-year veteran of the department, Ziegler first served in the jail for the first five years of his career before becoming a patrolman and then being involved with the department's K-9 program.
"He has the respect of everyone he works with... and has been a valued asset and confidant during all my years," said Rumsey during the announcement.
Named deputy of the year twice by the department during his career, Zeigler lives in Montour with his wife where he also trains dogs for hunting and search and rescue. Along with a long history with the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department, Zeigler has worked closely with Rumsey including on road patrol and helping him transition to a K-9 unit for the department as well.
"He was always there for me during those first few years," said Rumsey of his time as a K-9 officer.
Along with their experience working together, Rumsey praised Zeigler's character and work ethic.
"Always had a reputation for telling you straight like it is," said Rumsey. "He is that guy, but he will also go above and beyond for anyone."
Due to their shared experience, Rumsey said Zeigler was an easy choice not only for his experience, but his vision.
"We share views on where I want to take the sheriff's office," stated Rumsey.
Along with his role as a valued confidant, Rumsey said he also appointed Zeigler due to his confidence in his leadership.
"I feel confident he will be more than capable of running the office in my absence if that is required... (he is) a man of honor and integrity," added Rumsey.
