SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-16-22
Odessa-Montour Wrestling Wrestlers from the Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen wrestling team competed at the state qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 12. Lucas Hoffman finished second in the 102-pound weight class, falling in the final match to Darren Florance. Hoffman defeated Anthony Valls in the semi-final and Caden Ruben in the quarterfinals to reach the championship match. Wrestler Mark Waterman fell to Drew Macumber in the quarterfinal match in the tournament.
Boys Basketball The Odessa-Montour boys basketball team lost to Tioga, 70-38, Friday, Feb. 11. Keith June had 16 points. The Odessa boys fell to Candor, Tuesday, Feb. 8. The final score was 54-35. Cayden Confer scored 16 points.
Girls Basketball The Odessa-Montour girls basketball team topped Lansing, Thursday, Feb. 10. The final score was 49-21. Gina Gavich paced the team with 12 points. Mackenzie Cannon and Hannah Nolan each had 11. With the win, O-M is 10-8 and has won three straight. The girls won over Candor, 36-32, Tuesday, Feb. 8. Nolan and Gavich both had 10 points in the game. The team also beat Tioga last week, 53-38 on Monday, Feb. 7. Cannon had 14 points and Tori Brewster had 13.
Bowling The Odessa-Montour bowling teams competed at the IAC championship, Saturday, Feb. 12. The girls finished fifth and the boys were 10th.
Watkins Glen Boys Basketball The Watkins Glen boys basketball team improved to 17-1 and won their division with a victory over Newark Valley, Tuesday, Feb. 8. The final score was 71-18. Mitchell Pike scored 16 points and David Kelly had 15. The Watkins boys beat Waverly, 54-48, Monday, Feb. 7. Adam Pastore recorded 18 points and Pike had 14. The team will travel to Tompkins Cortland Community College, Thursday, Feb. 17 to play the IAC Large School title game. Tipoff is 7:45 p.m.
Girls Basketball The Watkins Glen girls basketball team beat Elmira Notre Dame, 41-23, Friday, Feb. 11. Rachel Vickio scored 10 points. Jenna Solomon and Brianna Hatch each had eight points. The Watkins girls lost to Newark Valley, Wednesday, Feb. 9. The final score was 63-35. Vickio had 12 points and Lillian Ameigh added 10.
Bowling The bowling teams for Watkins Glen competed at the IAC championship, Saturday, Feb. 12. The girls took fourth overall as Maisie Robertson had a 540 including a 222 third game. Ava Cowan had a 461 and Katie Cook a 438. For the boys, Mykel Cody led with a 601 and was named the second most improved male bowler in the IAC for the season. Brett Cullen-Pike added a 433. "I am very proud of all the Watkins Glen bowlers; it was a difficult atmosphere to perform in," said coach Ward Brower.
Boys Swimming The Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour boys swimming team finished second at the IAC Championships, Saturday, Feb. 12. Lansing won the event. Taking individual titles were: Max Ricca (diving), Liam Smith (500 free) and Ben Swinnerton (100 breaststroke).
Dundee/Bradford Girls Basketball The Dundee-Bradford girls basketball team added three wins to their 18-1 season last week, clinching the Finger Lakes West league title. The BraveScots topped Naples 68-12, Friday, Feb. 11. Hallie Knapp led with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals. Jade Roussell recorded 12 points, while Nikki Peterson added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Baleigh Monell grabbed 11 rebounds and Kendall Parker had seven steals with eight points in the game. Kailey Yeoman contributed eight points and five steals. The team beat Romulus, 74-26, Wednesday, Feb. 9. Knapp had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Parker added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Yeoman had 13 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals. The girls defeated Romulus, Monday, Feb. 7. The final score was 71-29. Knapp led with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Yeoman recorded 17 points with six steals. Parker added 14 points with seven steals and six assists and rebounds each. Mikayla Schoffner had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Boys Basketball The Dundee-Bradford boys basketball team improved to 15-4 on the season with three wins last week. The BraveScots won against South Seneca, 62-41, Saturday, Feb. 12. The boys defeated Naples 87-59, Thursday, Feb. 10. Logan Salvatore had 20 points. Michael End followed with 18 points, Logan Ayers had 17 and Nick Slavick 15. The team topped Romulus, 62-49, Tuesday, Feb. 8. Ayers led the team with 24 points and Salvatore had 15.
Bowling The Dundee-Bradford girls bowling team captured their fourth Finger Lakes West league championship with a season record 46-4 after beating Honeoye, Thursday, Feb. 10. The team includes Abby Miller, McKenna Miller, Cassie Morrissette, Jaedyn Brewer, Ellie Grant and Danica Hall. Against Honeoye, Miller led the girls with a 508 series and a game-high 197. For the boys, Cameron Burke had a 445 series and Joe Nowicki had a game-high 175. The girls also beat Romulus, 5-0, Wednesday, Feb. 9. Morrissette led the team with a 490 series. Miller had a game-high 203. The boys lost 5-0; Burke recorded a 447.
Wrestling The Dundee-Bradford wrestlers participated at the NYSPHSAA Section V 76th annual Wrestling Championships and 54th annual State Qualifier at SUNY Brockport, Saturday, Feb. 12. Kaden LaBar (215) recorded at a win against Midlakes' Jared Haers with a pin in 2:47.
Indoor Track The Dundee-Bradford indoor track team competed in the Wayne-Finger Lakes League Meet at Houghton College, Friday, Feb. 11. Camden Buchanan was first in the boys long jump (20' 8.75"), third in the triple jump (39' 11.5") and seventh in the 55 meter dash (7.08). Lily Hall was fifth in the girls long jump with a 14' 11.50" best distance and Madison Hughes was sixth with a 14' 9.75" result. Maya Somerville was eighth in the girls triple jump (29' 9").
Penn Yan Wrestling Marcus Whitman-Penn Yan's Mason Petersen will advance to the New York state wrestling championships after finishing second at the qualifier, Saturday, Feb. 12. Petersen faced North Rose-Wolcott's Noah Wazinski in the 285-pound championship match. After an overtime period, the final score was 3-2. Petersen defeated Dominic Lockwood (decision 7-0), Lloyd Kinnicutt (decision 10-4) and Patrick Hargrave (pin 3:47) to reach the first-place match. Jacob Eaves also won a match at the tournament, beating Max Heckman 6-0.
Boys Basketball The Penn Yan boys basketball team lost three games last week. They fell to Wayne, 67-55, Geneva 61-49 and Newark, 60-42. Leading scorers were Oliver Connelly with 17 points against Wayne, Brigham Hansen recording 14 points against Geneva and Ashtian Dunning with 14 points against Newark.
Girls Basketball The Penn Yan girls basketball team won over Newark, Saturday, Feb. 12. The final score was 61-40. Sierra Harrison had 20 points, while Elle Harrison and Kaley Griffin each scored 12 points. The girls won by one point, with a free throw made by Griffin, Friday, Feb. 11. The final score against Wayne was 27-26. The team also beat Geneva, 70-32, Wednesday, Feb. 9. Jammie Decker led with 24 points and Griffin recorded 20 points. Sierra Harrison and Elle Harrison each had eight points. The Mustangs fell to Our Lady of Mercy, 46-30, Monday, Feb. 7. Sierra Harrison scored 11 points and Decker had eight.
Bowling The Penn Yan boys and girls bowling teams topped Waterloo, Tuesday, Feb. 8. The boys won 5-0. Cameron Bassage led with a 732. Colin Johnson had a 726 series including a 265 third game. Connor Anderson contributed a 723 with a 287 third game. The girls also won 5-0. Andy Kniffin had a 656 and Anella Tillman a 643. Julia Maldonado added a 478
Hammondsport Girls Basketball The Hammondsport girls basketball team beat Alfred-Almond, 48-17, Thursday, Feb. 10. Samantha Pratt led with 11 points and five rebounds. Nichole Pratt added seven points as did Hannah Hoerter. Rorie Whitcomb recorded 13 rebounds and five points. The girls fell to Arkport/Canaseraga, 53-44, Tuesday, Feb. 8. Hoerter had 18 points with seven steals and Whitcomb contributed 11 points with 14 rebounds. LaZell Locey added 10 points.
Boys Basketball The Hammondsport boys basketball team lost to Arkport-Canaseraga, 50-45, Saturday, Feb. 12. The Lakers also fell to Campbell-Savona, Wednesday, Feb. 9. The final score was 51-30.
Wrestling Wrestlers on the Avoca-Hammondsport squad competed at the NYSPHSAA Section V 76th annual Wrestling Championships and 54th annual State Qualifier at SUNY Brockport, Saturday, Feb. 12. Nathan Young won at a match at 118, over Ben Alton of Red Creek with a pin in 5:01.
