SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-23-22

Watkins Glen
Boys Basketball
The Watkins Glen boys basketball team improved to 18-1 and captured the IAC Large School title with a win over Dryden, 64-50, Saturday, Feb. 19. The team enters the Section IV Class C tournament as the number one seed and earned a home game on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. as a result. The rest of the sectional games will be played at SUNY Cortland. Watkins will open sectionals facing the winner of a game between Elmira and Tioga. Moravia is the number two seed in Class C with a 16-1 record.
In the IAC championship game, the Senecas exploded in the fourth quarter changing a hard-fought game they were trailing 46-43 at the end of the third, to a game where they were able to leisurely let the clock run out by the end of the fourth, up 14.
Adam Pastore led with 21 points, Joe Sutterby had 16 and Jacob Yontz added 10.
This was Watkins Glen's third consecutive IAC title.

Girls Basketball
The Watkins Glen girls basketball team lost to Waverly, Monday, Feb. 14. The final score was 56-37. Rachel Vickio had 10 points and Jenna Solomon had seven.

Boys Swimming
The Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour swimming team competed at the Section IV meet, Saturday, Feb. 19. Overall, they finished with 362.5 points, good for third place.
However, the team had two individual champions with three wins total in Liam Smith (200 free - 1:55.59 and 500 free - 5:21.67) and Ben Swinnerton (100 breaststroke - 1:04.21). Smith was also voted Most Outstanding Performer in the championship.

Bowling
The Watkins Glen bowling teams competed at the sectional tournament, Saturday, Feb. 19. The girls were seventh and the boys were 10th.
Leading the girls was Alyiah Clink-Bentley with a 492. Aubrey Kellogg added a 407. For the boys, Mykel Cody had a 614 and Corbin Groves contributed a 535.

Odessa-Montour
Girls Basketball
The Odessa-Montour girls basketball team lost to Gilbertsville-Mount Upton, 36-35, Thursday, Feb. 17. Hannah Nolan scored 17 points and Tori Brewster had nine.

Bowling
The Odessa-Montour bowling teams competed at the sectional tournament, Saturday, Feb. 19. The girls were fourth with a total score of 2026 and the boys had a 2354 total, good for seventh.

Dundee/Bradford
Girls Basketball
The Dundee-Bradford girls varsity basketball team enters the Section V Class C3 tournament as the top seed with a 19-1 record. The team will have its first game, Saturday, Feb. 26 at Dundee with a 2 p.m. tipoff.
The girls concluded the regular season by defeating Marcus Whitman 47-42, Tuesday, Feb. 15. Kendall Parker scored 13 points and had three steals. Hallie Knapp added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Kailey Yeoman put up 10 points and eight steals. Mikayla Schoffner recorded a team-high 13 rebounds with six points.

Boys Basketball
The Dundee-Bradford boys basketball team enters the Section V Class C3 tournament as the third seed and will play their opening game, Friday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Dundee gym. They will face the winner of the Tuesday game between Harley-Allendale-Columbia and Lyndonville.
The boys fell to Midlakes in a close game, Wednesday, Feb. 16. The final score was 76-74. Logan Salvatore had 19 points, five rebounds and four steals. Nick Slavick added 15 points with eight rebounds and Camden Rosemier had 11 points. Michael End contributed nine points, eight assists and eight rebounds.

Bowling
The Dundee-Bradford boys bowling team competed at sectionals, Saturday, Feb. 19. Leading the team was Cameron Burke with a grand total of 829. Joe Nowicki followed with a 699. Samuel Holiday recorded a 603, Brett Watkins added a 597 and Logan Barned a 574.

Indoor Track
The indoor track team competed in the Section V Class A4 championships, Sunday, Feb. 20. Top finishers included: Lily Hall (third-girls triple jump), Madison Hughes (fourth-girls long jump) and Camden Buchanan (second-boys long jump and triple jump).

Penn Yan
Bowling
The Penn Yan boys bowling team finished first in their division to win the sectional title in Class D, Saturday, Feb. 19. Colin Johnson led with a 1,301 total over six games. Connor Anderson recorded a 1,186, Cameron Bassage had a 1,174 and Trenton Samatulski a 1,039.

Boys Basketball
The Penn Yan Mustangs will open their post-season campaign, Wednesday, Feb. 23. They will play Early College at home with a tipoff of 7 p.m. Penn Yan is the fifth seed in Class B2.
The boys lost to Palmyra-Macedon, 66-45, Tuesday, Feb. 15. Griffin Emerson scored 22 points in the game.

Girls Basketball
The Penn Yan girls basketball team enters the Section V tournament as the fifth seed in Class B2. They will play their first game at Mynderse on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
The team lost to Palmyra-Macedon, 43-23, Wednesday, Feb. 16. Sierra Harrison scored eight points and Elle Harrison had seven.
The Mustangs beat Mynderse, Monday, Feb. 14. The final score was 35-33. Sierra and Elle Harrison both scored 11 points and Jammie Decker added 10 rebounds with seven points.

Wrestling
Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan wrester Avery Castner competed at the third annual New York state intersectional girls wrestling championship, Saturday, Feb. 19. Castner took fourth in the 152-pound division.

Hammondsport
Boys Basketball
The Hammondsport basketball team will open the sectional round facing Andover/Whitesville, Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Lakers are the 10th seed.
The team also defeated Arkport-Canaseraga, Monday, Feb. 14. The final score was 48-46.

Girls Basketball
The sixth-seeded girls basketball team will open their post-season facing number three Elba, Saturday, Feb. 26. The game is at 2 p.m. at Elba Central.
The girls concluded their regular season by winning against Jasper-Troupsburg, 54-42, Monday, Feb. 14. Danica Dresser and Hannah Hoerter each scored 16 points. Rorie Whitcomb recorded 10 points with 13 rebounds..
