FINGER LAKES--About 200 swimmers are expected to take the plunge on July 29 in support of this year’s Krossin’ Keuka, an annual fundraiser held in support of Keuka Comfort Care. Organizers are still taking registrations. To sign up, visit https://krossinkeuka.org/index.php?groupingID=main. Swimmers will meet at Point Neamo, take a quick boat ride to Willow Point, which is on the east side of Keuka Lake, and swim the .67 miles back to the finish line.
The event is open to all ages and all abilities. In addition, all flotation devices are welcome, according to Kevin Ring, who stresses that the event is not a race. Rather, he said, it is fun exercise for a good cause. Ring is the president of the board of directors. On Saturday, he will be placing the buoys so that swimmers stay within an identified 20-yard-wide lane, one of many tactics to keep participants safe.
“Safety is of the utmost concern,” said Ring. “We have arranged for 35 kayaks, 12 lifeguards, and sheriffs who will all be assisting in various ways.”
Although not quite 80 degrees, swimmers can expect that the water temperature will be in the high seventies. Swimmers and spectators alike can expect “groovy” sights and sounds, as the 2023 organizers bring back the 1960s with this year’s theme. Music, theme-related prizes, and food are all being planned.
Although Keuka Comfort Care hosts several fundraisers throughout the year, Ring said that Krossin’ Keuka is one of the most important events relative to the organization’s success. Everyone who participates, including swimmers and those helping with safety, are expected to contribute financially.
All money raised from this event goes directly to Keuka Comfort Care, an organization that was founded by six local couples who recognized the need for convenient access to residential services for those who are terminally ill as well as support for their families. The organization is staffed with two paid positions and hundreds of volunteers who complete intensive training and shadowing programs, according to Ring.
