WATKINS GLEN--At the Watkins Glen village board meeting Tuesday, Aug. 1, Mayor Laurie DeNardo recognized the “heroic” efforts of several Clute Park lifeguards who recently saved a man who was in distress. To commemorate their service, the guards, including Cameron Holland, Giuseppe La Face, Isabella La Face, Hannah Nolan, and Nikhil Manakkal, each received a certificate of valor.
Also during the meeting, trustees received updates from Amanda Ratchford, of the Larson Design Group, about the ongoing water project and from Emily Hoffman regarding initiatives underway at the Schuyler County Office of Public Health. Parks Superintendent Craig Bond noted that representatives from Stantec, the company retained to create an accessible playground at Clute Memorial Park, will meet with community members on Aug. 9, seeking feedback about the types of equipment that children would find enjoyable. Participants of the Summer Rec program may be consulted during a noon meeting. Parents and children are invited to attend a public session that day at the events center from 5 to 6 p.m.
Trustees also approved payments for work completed on the Water System Improvement project and the LaFayette Park project and passed a resolution to commit a cash match in the amount of $1,213,500 for the Appalachian Regional Commission funding for a pump station upgrade and force main reroute at Clute Memorial Park. This resolution was passed with the understanding that “the Village of Watkins Glen is committed to securing funding.”
