YATES COUNTY--A number of upcoming events will be held in Yates County with the support of the Cornell Cooperative Extension.
The Yates County Farmland Protection Plan has been updated, and the board is looking for feedback on the new plan. Attend one of the following meetings to hear more and give thoughts.
• Oct. 3, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Our Town Rocks (12 Main St, Dundee)
• Oct. 5, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Yates County Auditorium (417 Liberty St., Penn Yan)
The plan’s draft is available at Our Town Rocks, Penn Yan Public Library, Branchport Public Library, and the Mabel D. Blodgett Reading Room or by contacting CCE-Yates County at 315-536-5123.
The 2023 Yates County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan aims to support agricultural businesses and keep high-quality farmland in agricultural production. The plan documents the economic significance of agriculture and related industries to the local and regional economy, evaluates agricultural land resources and environmental conditions, and recommends specific actions that Yates County and its partners can take to ensure that farming remains viable for generations to come.
Also next week, the CCE is working to bring the Northwest New York Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Team to Yates County. The event will be Wednesday, Oct. 4 for area farmers, legislators, community groups, and the general public.
The NWNY Dairy, Livestock, and Field Crops Team is one of the regional agricultural CCE programs in New York, serving a nine-county region in the western part of the state. The specialists work with Cornell faculty and extension educators statewide to provide service to large and small farms, whether dairy, livestock, hay, corn, wheat, or soybean-focused. The team is part of the outreach of the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Pro-Dairy program. Educational programs and individual assistance cover a wide area of best management practices as well as a dairy farm business.
