PENN YAN-Local FFA members will be attending the 96th National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis coming up in November. This year, local students will be competing in the national competition and three alumni receiving their American FFA degrees.
Carlie Bossard, an agriculture teacher at Penn Yan Academy, along with other FFA advisors, has planned a trip that includes stops at various areas of agriculture that cover animal, plant, mechanical, and food sciences. Bossard said “This year we are going back to the Caterpillar plant and visitors center in Illinois. We had some of our seniors who wanted to have that as a stop with it being their last trip.”
Three senior members of FFA recently shared their thoughts on why attending the national convention is one of the biggest highlights of their time with the organization. Storm Sutherland mentioned that meeting people from all over the country and learning about their FFA experiences is a great opportunity. Ryan Dann also sees the convention as a chance to explore different parts of the country and meet new people. Similarly, Colleen Cunningham believes that the trip has allowed her to establish new relationships and connections with people who share her interests and background.
To raise funds, the Penn Yan FFA will once again host the homecoming chicken barbecue, as they have for over 30 years. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Penn Yan Academy Cafeteria. The proceeds from this fundraiser will help get these students on their way to Indianapolis.
Dinners cost $15 per person. The meal includes chicken cooked by FFA alumnus, Andrew Jensen, with sides that include mac salad, baked beans and salt potatoes by Timmy G., along with rolls and a cookie. If you’re interested in buying presale tickets, please email cbossard@pycsd.org.
The National FFA Organization, with FFA historically standing for Future Farmers of America, is for students who want to engage in agriculture and leadership aspiring to be farmers, teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners or more. The organization focuses on hands-on experiences. Penn Yan’s FFA is recognized as a three-star national chapter award winner, the highest ranking.
